Winter and sweaters go together like ham and eggs. (And you thought it was peanut butter and jelly; or peas and carrots.) Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about easy-to-pull-together style uniforms ready at a moment’s notice to head out the door. Nothing is better to slip into than a cashmere sweater during the cold and dreary winter months. Unless it’s an oversize cashmere sweater. It’s cozy and comfy and keeps the winter chill at bay.
One reason I love Nordstrom, besides their in-house brand Nordstrom Made, is that they’ve got one-stop shopping from a variety of brands. Last year, I picked up a pair of Spanx black pants (limited sizes, check out this pair of black pants from Open Edit) that are on style repeat all winter long. Seriously, every woman should own at least one pair due to their flattering yet comfortable fit. That’s Spanx for you! Recently, I purchased this funnel neck cashmere sweater in a neutral color from the Nordstrom Signature Collection. It’s a match made in heaven! Two brands, one retailer. It doesn’t get easier than that.

Nordstrom Made brands like Halogen, Caslon, and Zella are oh-so affordable and carry an extensive lineup of activewear, sweaters, pants, and shoes. But when I’m looking for timeless classics that are the backbone of my wardrobe, I head to Nordstrom Signature, which epitomizes sophisticated luxury.
While I was online shopping at Nordstrom, I decided to check out leopard coats. This is one animal print that never gets old. Am I right?! Much to my delight, I spied this leopard print coat (limited sizes, similar here and here) with a timeless appeal that goes perfectly with my style uniform of a sweater and black pants.
Besides shopping for clothes, I also love to add a pair of sunnies to my collection now and again. These Givenchy sunglasses available at Nordstrom are currently on sale. In the shopping cart, they went One-stop shopping, which is convenient but can be dangerous. Well, it’s hazardous to my Nordstrom card statement…

These are a few of my favorite things about Nordstrom.

Of all your winter wardrobe favorites, what’s your most, most, and I mean most favorite? I mean the one item you absolutely cannot live without. Is it that one jacket? A worn pair of jeans you just can’t part with? So hard to pick when you get right down to it—not sure if I could even answer that question completely. What I do know is this: it’s really hard to beat a cozy cashmere sweater. Style trends come, and style trends go, but a cashmere sweater is a wardrobe essential.
I’m just going to throw this out there: Everlane knocked it out of the park with their turtleneck cashmere sweater. Cozy? Check. Comfortable? Check. And Stylish? You betcha. Count me in. Anyone who knows me knows I can’t pass up on camel, but this sweater comes in a variety of colors. (I’m kinda loving the Key Lime.) What I love about this sweater is that you can dress it up or down.
Today, I layered it with a blouse from Banana Republic and a pair of high-waisted raw hem denim, which you can easily imagine swapping for a pair of white denim for a sleek look. Accessorize with a bold necklace for added emphasis.

Yes, ma’am, high-waisted jeans are in, and they’re here to stay. I’ve been loving the raw hem look so far this New Year, but if it’s not your thing, look, not to worry. The Gap’s got you covered today: they’re running a (up to) 70% off sale with tons of high-waisted options. You can’t go wrong with their high-rise vintage slim or ace jeans.

Thought I’d try something new today—a pair of boots from Jessica Simpson’s clothing line. Fun fact: she launched the line in 2005, sold it in 2015, and reclaimed it last year. Who knew?

it’s no secret that fall is my favorite time of year for fashion. for today’s trip through the archives, i am highlighting cashmere. cashmere is perfect for fall and winter. it’s works well for layering and it’s just so soft and comfortable, like a warm hug. so, sit back and take a look at how i have styled cashmere through the last year. as always, the links you’ll find in this post have been updated with items available now. ’tis the season for cashmere!
the leaves are turning, the weather is getting colder, and we’re headed straight into Thanksgiving. the transition is upon us from fall to winter, and this week i’m bringing you my first real series of warmer outfits. today: cashmere from head-to-toe. after all, what is more luxurious than cashmere?
it’s finally cold here in Athens. i know, i know “cold” is a relative notion, but we’ve hit the freezing mark the past few days, and i’m trying to stay warm. my oldest has it particularly bad: he’s been in California the past 10 years, and well, he can’t handle anything below 50 degrees. sad, huh? not to worry: we’ll toughen him up. is it chilly where you are? colder than here? then this post is for you.

all week, we’ve been continuing on with our series a day in the life. on Monday, i gave you a glimpse of my porch refresh; and yesterday, i showed you my living room. we’re sticking with that theme today, but deviating slightly. earlier this year, we launched the series how to stay organized, where i gave you a few tips on how to keep your kitchen tame and under control. today, i’m going to offer a few words of advice on how i keep my fridge clean. i know. no one likes to clean their fridge. but when it’s done, it’s done. and boy does it feel good. i always look to The Container Store to keep my organization up to date. and they offer some amazing refrigerator bins that keep the clutter tamed even inside my fridge.

while cashmere always feels luxurious, it can dress up or down with ease. like with a cashmere hoodie. and contrary to what you may be thinking, cashmere can be more affordable than ever. Everlane has beautiful affordable cashmere, for example. with proper care (yes, you can hand wash your cashmere at home!) cashmere will last through the years and it will always be a timeless classic.
all black… when Christmas is right around the corner? i’ve gone rogue you’re thinking—totally mad. but i assure you, i’m a rebel with a cause. with holidays are fast approaching, much like last week, i want to take a slight detour. today, we’re fashion forward and focused on a leather “holiday” outfit i know you’re going to love. how can you not, especially when the centerpiece is this pair of laceless d’orsay oxford from Freda Salvador?
the rains have hit Athens. the weather continues to jump around between highs of 70s and lows of 40s. so when the world can’t make up its mind, it’s time to go back to the basics. back to black. all black. today i’m sporting a black cashmere turtleneck from Talbots. They’ve got a 50% off sale today, so make sure to pick one up if you’ve been on the fence.
i’ve paired the turtleneck with these really fun ankle-zip joggers from Neiman Marcus. and if you don’t have a leather jacket and/or blazer in your closet, i’ve pulled this one and a similar from Nordstrom. a staple every woman should have.

of all the shoes i’ve worn recently, these laceless d’orsay oxfords are my favorite. by far. in fact, if i had to pick, my lug-sole loafers and these oxfords are my fall & winter statement pieces respectively. i cannot recommend them highly enough. don’t they just make you want to get up and sing:
cashmere turtleneck | jogger pants | jacket | similar jacket | laceless d’orsay oxford
we are approaching the holidays; and a new year; and a new decade. and i’m excited, because much like today, i plan to continue to being a fashion rebel, if only in the sense that i’ll continue to try to bring you new ideas that push us both in and out of our comfort zones. so, tell me in the comments below one time you broke out of yours this year.

let’s take a break from the holidays—just today—and return to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow. i’m taking the day off today to catch up on, well, the day-to-day things that can easily get lost in the mix. laundry. groceries. bills. and an evening in.
over the past few weeks, we’ve focused a lot on holiday outfits. today i’m showcasing something a little more subdued—a little more casual. i’m tapping into my preppy side—my favorite side—and bringing you an outfit that’s perfect for running errands, meeting a friend for lunch, or an evening at the movies.
i don’t know about you, but there’s always a point mid-December in which i just want a break. a timeout. a pause to catch my breath. the gauntlet of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s can be tiring. not because they’re not fun. not because they’re not full of people that i care truly deeply about. but because being “on” for six straight weeks can be a bit much.
we talk a lot about self-care and wellness over here on the blog. and one of the most important things about both is that we have to constantly remind ourselves to invest in them. it’s an ongoing process—a continuing journey. if you too need a short break, then join me today in doing so. i don’t think you’ll regret it.
sweater blazer | cashmere crew | scarf | scarf 2 | scarf 3 | straight jeans | penny loafers
i think i’ve found my favorite outfit of the month. it’s totally simple. slightly understated. and perfect for how i’m feeling today: a cashmere crew from Everlane and a pair of straight jeans J.Crew. a sweater and pair of jeans. you really cannot go wrong. and if you need to layer, try this sweater blazer also from J.Crew.
sweater blazer | cashmere crew | scarf | scarf 2 | scarf 3 | straight jeans | penny loafers
long time readers of the blog know that my go-to aesthetic is preppy. if it’s not too cold where you are—we’ve got a 68 degree day here in Athens—easily prep up your outfit with these penny loafers from J.Crew. i’ve been loving loafers this fall and winter, and today is no exception. (and you know that you’ll be able to pull them out of your closet come spring.)

so tell me ladies: how are you taking care of yourself this holiday season? have you taken a day off? had an evening in? let me know in the comments below.
it’s Friday, gang! this week, we’re bringing you our first Christmas edition of fridays with oscar. we’re Talbots heavy today, featuring their perfect white shirt and glen plaid pants. i think you’re going to love this outfit: it works for work, home, or any holiday party you’re headed to this season. and you know how i feel about glen plaid: glen plaid is always on-trend.
and as always, Fridays would not be complete without a cocktail. i’ve been on a martini kick over the past few weeks. i’m continuing that today with a slight variation. for all of you coffee drinkers, i know you’re going to love it. so kick back. relax. and cheers to you ladies!
nothing is black and white until, well, it is. today, i’ve got a classic outfit for you: a black cashmere crew neck from Everlane paired with Talbots‘ perfect white shirt. (no pop of color today, except well my nails and lips.) that combination goes perfectly with these killer gray glen plaid pants, again from Talbots.
this fall and winter, particularly when i’m working in and around the house, i’m consistently drawn to flats, loafers, and slippers. these smoking slippers from Ann Taylor are just so fun and i featured a similar pair on fridays with oscar last week. check them out

i’ve got a sweet tooth. after all, it’s the holiday season: how can you not? we had our 2nd annual local Athens blogger cookie exchange the other night and i’ve got a freezer full of goodies. in that spirit, i’m featuring a dessert today. on the menu: raspberry oat bars. super simple to make. freeze to keep. and serve when the (grand)kiddos come over. you’re gonna love them.
like i said, i’m big into martinis lately. we’ve got a twist on that idea for you: a baileys espresso martini. as you can guess, it goes well with any desert. i mean seriously: how can you go wrong with coffee and baileys? such a classic pairing.
alright gang, that’s a wrap! as always, from everyone here at style at a certain age, we wish you a wonderful weekend. we hope that you’re managing stress during the holidays and finding time to spend with friends and family. i’m traveling to Florida this weekend for a conference. stay tuned next week for some pictures from my travels.

it’s finally cold here in Athens. i know, i know “cold” is a relative notion, but we’ve hit the freezing mark the past few days, and i’m trying to stay warm. my oldest has it particularly bad: he’s been in California the past 10 years, and well, he can’t handle anything below 50 degrees. sad, huh? not to worry: we’ll toughen him up. is it chilly where you are? colder than here? then this post is for you. as we head into winter, stay warm in this outfit featuring a cashmere turtleneck and wool sweater coat from Anthropologie.
this wool sweater coat was featured in last week’s fridays with oscar. there were lot’s of positive feedback, so i decided to give you an alternative styling this week. today, i’ve paired the coat with a cashmere turtleneck and A-Line skirt (old, similar here, here and here). for extra warmth, i’ve pulled in a pair of tights from Talbots. (but any pair will do.)

i’m totally in love with these boots from Stuart Weitzman purchased last year – they’re pricey but sometimes a girl’s gotta splurge. but there’s a similar pair at Nordstrom. i particularly like the patrick boots as they have a side zip and a reasonable price point. but no matter what the price tag a pair of black boots are a must-have come winter. they’re on winter repeat and have shown up on the blog before: you can see them styled alternatively with a denim skirt. (and make sure to head over to Nordstrom for a preview of their Black Friday and Cyber Monday inventory.)
practically speaking, these boots make the entire outfit perfectly suited for colder temperatures. and they’re further accentuated by pairing them with a leather satchel. it appears Nordstrom is having a difficult time keeping it in stock, but you can find similar ones as well.

Thanksgiving isn’t even here, and of course, we’re talking about Christmas. for those of you that celebrate Christmas, i’m always curious as to where you purchase and when you put up your tree. do you go to a tree farm? do you cut down your own? is it small? tall? somewhere in-between? do you put it up the day after Thanksgiving? the first week of December? let me know in the comments below.

that’s a wrap, gang! happy, happy tuesday! two more days until turkey day. can’t wait for those mashed potatoes.
the leaves are turning, the weather is getting colder, and we’re headed straight into Thanksgiving. the transition is upon us from fall to winter, and this week i’m bringing you my first real series of warmer outfits. today: cashmere from head-to-toe. after all, what is more luxurious than cashmere?
last week, my family brought you a series of holiday memories: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. keeping with that theme, join us all this week for holiday decorating ideas. kelly and i are bringing you kitchen and dining room holiday-themed tablescapes. you’re not going to want to miss them. i even put together a gift guide for you for each holiday: Thanksgiving through New Year’s.
it’s going to be a fun, light, and family-filled week over here on Style at a Certain Age. we know how hectic this season can be, but we’re looking forward to taking a break between the madness with you, even if it’s just for a little while.
it’s been all about J.Crew for me this fall and winter. (head over to their website for early Cyber Monday deals.) today, i’m sporting a matching camel cashmere sweater layered with a cashmere sweater-blazer. an easy way to break up this chromatic pairing is with a color pop. i’ve chosen to do so with this silk scarf from Talbots. i’ve been loving the silk scarves this year. and if you’re looking for some more ideas, this one from Talbots is one of our best sellers.
cashmere sweater-blazer | cashmere sweater | wide-leg pant | toby flat | scarf | tote bag
i’ve chosen to pair the cashmere sweater and cashmere sweater-blazer with this wide-leg pant from J.Crew. i’ve featured the wide-leg pant several times this year, including coupling it with a blazer. today, i’ve gone with a slight variation: cropped wide-legs.
i’m featuring them with these fun toby flats from Nordstrom because this look is on-trend this fall and winter. however, cropped wide-legs plus flats can tend to make one look shorter. stay tuned for tomorrow’s post, where i’ll take the same pant and pair it with heels. then you’ll really get a sense of how versatile these pants are.

it got cold in Athens last week. how’s the weather been where you are? are you going to get snow for Thanksgiving this year? all i know is this: it’s time to start bundling: cashmere head-to-toe.

all this week, we’ll be featuring holiday tablescapes over here on the blog. we’re starting with Thanksgiving. first up is a more casual, kitchen tablescape. i’m loving the retro vibe the green placemats contrasted with the laid napkins give.
and now for something a little more formal. this is our take on a Thanksgiving dining room tablescape.
below, i’ve put together some fun Thanksgiving decorating and gift ideas for you.
we’ve put together several gift guides for you this fall. in case you missed them, we’ve compiled them here:
it’s friday gang! it’s been a solid week over here on the blog. in case you missed it, we did a deep dive into fall fashion aimed for the career woman (but also here). we also officially introduced a new YouTube series fashioned squared over here on the blog. definitely check it out, especially if you’re looking for outfit ideas. i show you three ways to wear a white shirt. video above. but today is friday. and i have a crowd over tonight—all of my sons are in town. and of course we could go out to eat, but there’s nothing quite like a home cooked meal. in the spirit of keeping it simple ya’ll—more time for laughs—i’ve got an instant pot turkey chili recipe for you. time to kick back, relax, and pour a drink.
it’s casual friday over here at the office today. and by office, i mean my kitchen. in keeping with the theme of styling a white shirt, i’ve paired it with a beautiful cashmere sweater from Everlane. i’ve thrown on a pair of black slacks, but you could do navy just as well. and of course i spice everything up—just a bit—with leopard print shoes. head over to Talbots to grab a pair.
keeping with our tablescape from last week on friday’s with oscar, i’ve retooled and added to my pumpkin patch. in both fashion and decorating, i’m a big believer in versatility and reusability. decorations, just like clothes, are investments, and the goals is to get as much mileage out of them as possible. all i’ve had to add from last week’s tablescape are these cute pumpkin chili bowls. gives it a whole new vibe. love it.

if you don’t have an instant pot, get one. they were and are all the rage. and for good reason. what can’t these modern wonders do? very little. i get a ton of use out of this gadget every fall and winter.
there are so many different types of recipes out there to choose from. and they’re all so easy. today, i’ve chosen a turkey chili one for you. i’ve picked up the ingredients from Trader Joe’s. check out last week’s post on how to eat healthy at Trader Joe’s.

when you’ve got a crowd, you’ve gotta have sides. what’s better with chili than chips and cornbread? chips before and during the meal. have ’em with a little salsa and sour cream, and save the rest for dunking in the chili.
cornbread is a Trader Joe’s mix spiced up with some jalapenos and shredded cheese. i love cornbread because it’s the perfect mixture between sweet and savory. how do you do yours?

we’ve done a lot of fall cocktails over here on the blog. last week, it was the white pumpkin. the week before, it was an apple cider mojito. today, i’m keeping it simple: beer. my kiddos love beer, and i do to. Athens’ craft beer game is strong. we’ve got Terrapin Beer Company and Creature Comforts to name a few. if you see them in your local store, make sure to pick a case up. you won’t be disappointed. i’m a light beer gal myself: pilsners and lagers. coming from the Bay Area, my eldest son is an IPA fan. what’s your favorite type of beer?
alright, gang! that’s a wrap here. we’ve covered a lot of ground this week and are ending on a high note. let me know what you’ve got planned for the weekend in the comments below. are you traveling? going to see a movie? dinner for two? have a new recipe you’re into? found a new microbrewery near you? i love to hear what’s going on in your life.
