Earlier this month, we ran our 2022 denim trends that you will love (and hate).  Almost paradoxically, one of the most loved (and hated) styles was the wide-leg jean.  They’re a denim style we’ve featured over the years, and the truth is wide-leg jeans this Spring are in.   This pant silhouette is trending and will be for some time.  So let’s kick of Monday by channeling some Spring vibes—-color, color, and more color.  And let’s see if I can convince you to try one of this year’s hottest denim styles.

Wide-leg jeans this Spring

Today’s outfit is super simple, but a lot of fun.  We’re featuring a white tee and blazer from Ann Taylor that’s already sold out.  (Darn it.)   But per usual, I’ve grabbed similars you can find here and here.  I’m loving bright colors this Spring:  reds, yellows, and oranges.  (Last week, I featured a pair of red pants, very similar to my blazer color today.) The wide-leg pants are old, but I’ve rounded up some similars too: here, here, and here.

This pant silhouette is trending this Spring

Gone are the days of skinny jeans.   Wide-leg is the trending silhouette this Spring.  And while some may think their body type prevents them from pulling these pants off, not true.  Try pairing wide-leg pants with a pair of pointed-toe pumps for extra length; tuck in your shirt for a more tailored look; and whether you’re feeling color or not, going monochromatic is always a great way to create a tight, clean look that attracts the eye up and down the entire outfit.

Women’s denim trends

As I saw all the time on the blog, denim trends come and go.  But sometimes it’s good to break out of our fashion comfort zones and try something new.  Wide-leg pants are a fun and easy way to do just that.

Yesterday, we continued our Essential Series with 5 timeless fashion essentials every woman should own.  Make sure also to check out our entire Essential Series

Our first entry into our Essential Series this month is 5 timeless fashion essentials you need in your closet, including the essential Spring raincoat (’cause it’s almost that time of year).  They are:

  • trench coat;
  • classic satchel;
  • gold hoops;
  • tweed blazer;  and
  • cap-toe pump.

This post continues the Essential Series we began in January:

One of the goals of this series is to help you build a classic and timeless wardrobe that you can “shop” for years to come.  So for each essential item today,  I put together a widget of shoppable items.  I’ve also gone back into the archives and found different ways you can style each item.

5 timeless fashion essentials

The trench coat has made many appearances on the blog over the years.  To my mind, it is the essential Spring & Fall raincoat.  Did you know that during WWI British Officers wore trench coats that had been modified with shoulder straps and D-rings? the ring was included so that map cases, swords, or other equipment could easily attach to the belt. (After all, necessity is the mother of invention.)

Burberry reigns supreme when it comes to a khaki trench, but other retailers like J.Crew have them at lower price points.  I’ve put together a shopping widget below for a variety of different options.

Essential Spring raincoats:  Trench Coat

Style tip:  If you already have a khaki trench, but want to add another, consider something more exotic like animal print.

Satchel Handbag

We ran a list of essential accessories back in January.  Handbags were featured there heavily.  If I had to pick one and only one handbag I would carry with me, it would be the satchel handbag.  Yup, even above a crossbody or clutch.  What I love most about the satchel is its versatility.  Style them up, or style them down—satchels can work for you in just about any situation.

Style tip:  Pick one time in your outfit to match your bag to create a perfect synergy between your accessories and that outfit.

Gold Hoops

Jewelry is the most personal part of any woman’s closet.  From heirloom pieces to costume jewelry, choices reflect highly specific and often memorable points in our life.  It truly is difficult to recommend jewelry for other women to buy.

But if you backed me into a corner, I would say that every woman should own a pair of gold hoops.  If you were to scroll through my past posts, I’m willing to bet that I’ve featured gold hoops more than any other piece of jewelry.  I get that much use out of mine.

Style tip:  Pair gold hoops with gold bangles to create a subtle, easily reinforceable theme for your outfit.

Tweed Blazer

Just like trench coats, blazers are a regular fixture over here at Style at a Certain Age.   Tweed blazers are such easy transition pieces from Winter-to-Spring or Fall-To-Winter, they can be reused often.  And given that they can be dressed up or down, you’ll have no trouble finding new ways to wear them.

Style tip:  Pair a tweed blazer with denim, because it works every time.

Cap-Toe Slingback

The cap-toe slingback might not need any introduction due to its iconic status. Coco Chanel introduced this beauty in 1957 and nicknamed it “the height of elegance.” This shoe ticks all the classic boxes and is a cult favorite due to its neutral color scheme – black toe and nude body. The heel is not too high nor too low and looks fantastic with skirts, dresses, pants or blue jeans.

Today, we’re introducing “Real vs. Steal.” Who doesn’t love a bargain?

Walmart carries the Easy Spirit cap-toe pump that’s easy on your budget. Hands down the best dupe are the Exclusive Baton Heel available at TuckerNuck that looks almost identical to the Chanel slingback. Karen White pointy toe slingback is elegant and sophisticated thanks to a v-shape opening. And the Vaneli Aliz slingback is a perennial favorite available at Nordstrom.

Style tip: this shoe is as practical as it is beautiful because the nude color lengthens the leg while the black toe shortens the foot.

Winter is still here for a little while, but here’s a comfy sweater to beat the cold.

This post is sponsored by Nordstrom.

The weather in Georgia has been flirting with spring the past week or so. And I can’t say that I’m mad about it. While fall and winter have lots to offer regarding fashion: cashmere sweaters, coats, boots, scarves, and mittens, there’s something to be said about shedding a layer or two and showing some skin and that brand spanking new pedicure. It’s the perfect dress for wedding season with a pair of sassy shoes.

Perfect dress for wedding season

Bright colors are trending for spring 2022; saffron and green are seen everywhere, and oversized blazers find their power in volume. But black and white are here to stay, so I couldn’t resist a flirty black and white dress with subtle shades of purple throughout. An asymmetric ruffled hem adds a hint of feminity while the chiffon fabric adds movement. What can I say about the smocked waist, except it’s flattering and forgiving?!

As we head into spring special occasions are on the horizon with Easter, Mother’s Day, Graduations, and Weddings. This dress ticks all the boxes and is available at my favorite retailer, Nordstrom. As a matter of fact, my white sandals, black sandals, and black quilted handbag harken from Nordstrom too. It’s one-stop shopping at its best!

Today, I’m showcasing two pairs of sandals with this perfect dress for wedding season. One black and one white from Vince Camuto and Sam Edelman, respectively. Both brands are available at Nordstrom. What I love about both shoes is the of the moment square toe. Footwear is an easy way to incorporate trends into your wardrobe without going over the top. Add a pointy-toe pump or jewel-encrusted sandals, and this dress has special occasion written all over it. Or keep the shoes simple, and you’re ready for the weekend.

A simple white canvas handbag (old, similar here and here) ties back to the white sandals.

In case you missed it

Yesterday, we began our spring preview by deep-diving into 2022 denim trends.

And if you haven’t checked out our new addition to the blog, DAILY LOOKS, make sure to do just that. Daily Looks is a really simple feature:  a dedicated photo feed of my daily outfits. And you can shop those outfits easily through the shop the widget below the picture.

One of the goals of this blog is simple:  I want to show that many of the fashion rules aimed at women of a certain age can be broken. Putting aside the fact that the phrase woman of a certain age is often used derisively, it’s worth mentioning that age brings wisdom. And with age, I have learned that it’s actually pretty rare for categorical rules to be, well, “categorical.”

“Don’t wear distressed jeans.”

“Women over 50 shouldn’t wear shorts or skirts above their knees.”

“You’re too old to wear leather pants.”

“Wear an age-appropriate outfit.”

“Don’t wear a bold lip color.”

And on and on. We’ve all heard them—the fashion dos and don’ts of getting older. But today, I want to show you something simple:  it’s not about what you wear; it’s how you wear it. That’s the key. You’re not too old to wear… because clothes have sizes, ladies, not ages.

Not too old to wear leather pants

Leather pants. Today, I’m featuring a pair of black faux leather pants (J.Crew, limited sizes) paired with a pair of suede boots. Paired with an otherwise prepster look—white shirt (Banana Republic), black Crewneck Sweater (Banana Republic), and herringbone blazer (J.Crew old, similar), the leather pants add only the slightest flair to an otherwise subdued look.

Imagine pairing these tops with a pair of jeans instead—or even black slacks. Great looks, for sure. Tried and true. But totally different. The leather pants breathe life into this outfit, and they provide visual excitement to an outfit any woman of any age can pull off.

Classic herringbone blazer

On Sunday, we brought you the essential tops any woman should have in their wardrobe. Featured prominently was the mighty blazer. I love a classic herringbone blazer (J.Crew old, similar) in particular. My go-to style is undoubtedly “preppy,” and very few garments embody that look more than a herringbone blazer. (Maybe a pair of loafers?) This is an old blazer that I wear often, but I’ve found similar blazers from Talbots and Nordstrom.

Satchels

It’s not very often that I call out my bags in a post. But I’m just feeling this black Ralph Lauren satchel lately. Perfectly pairs with today’s all-neutral outfit, but as we all know, black pretty much goes with anything. So, it’s flexible. I’ve had it for years, so I rounded up this similar satchel for you.

In case you missed it

If you’re looking for continued ways to add fun and excitement to your outfits, check out these shoes that add levity to your outfit.

One of my goals here at Style at a Certain Age is to help you establish a wardrobe that’s built on top of the basics. With that foundation in place, building new and interesting outfits becomes so much easier.  Without that foundation, well, we’ve all been there.

Every Sunday this month, we’re going to run an entry in our long-running series:  Back to Basics.  Today, we’re focusing on the most essential tops in your wardrobe:

  • classic fit tees
  • crew neck sweater
  • white button-down shirt
  • blazer
  • oversized blazer
  • denim or chambray shirt
  • graphic tee
  • blouse

The way to read this post is simple:  in each section, I’ve given you photos of different ways I’ve styled that top, with an assortment of links from tried and true retailers to shop the item.  Where I’ve could, I’ve also provided links to pasts posts for more pictures and information about that top.  So, without further ado, let’s get down to the most essential tops any woman should have in their wardrobe.

Classic Fit Tees

The foundation of any classic wardrobe is in fact a classic fit t-shirt.  The mighty t-shirt serves as the foundation of any outfit.  Whether you’re using the t-shirt to serve as your first layer; or whether you’re wearing it alone, every classic wardrobe needs at least classic tees in:

  • whites, blacks, and greys;
  • striped; and
  • (additional) neutrals like camel or army green.

All of your favorite retailers are going to carry their version of the classic t-shirt.  But you can’t go wrong with the Gap family:  Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic.

Crewneck Sweater

The crewneck sweater is the backbone of any classic fall and winter wardrobe.  Whether you’re a prepster at heart or something a bit more free-flowing, crewneck sweaters are a must.  Much like a classic t-shirt, crewnecks can serve as the mid-layer of any well-layered outfit.  Wear them on top of a white button-down or a classic t-shirt;  crewnecks pair with just about anything and everything. Again, you’re going to want to establish a wardrobe that includes crewneck sweaters in

  • whites, blacks, and greys; and
  • (additional) neutrals like camel or army green.

And what can be more comfortable than cashmere?  A cashmere crewneck.  Again, your favorite retailer is going to carry a crewneck sweater, but you can’t go wrong with Everlane’s this year.

White Button-Down

The white button-down is just as important as the classic t-shirt.  Wear it alone for a bit of simple elegance, or layer it under a cashmere crewneck.  Dress white button-downs up with a pair of slacks and heels; or dress them down with a pair of boyfriend jeans.  White button-downs can be styled any and every way.   What’s more:  white button-downs are seasonless.  Arguably the most versatile and important top in any classic wardrobe,  start with J. Crew and work your way backward.

Blazer

The blazer is up next, and what more can I say about this staple that I haven’t already said over the years?  When adding blazers to your wardrobe, you’re going to want to start with

  • a classic navy and/or black one; and then
  • a herringbone and/or a houndstooth.

Blazers can be paired with any of the above tops.  Wear it with a classic t-shirt for a more casual look or on top of a white button-down for business chic.  If it’s cold outside where you are, blazers pair can be paired monochromatically with their crewneck counterparts.  Or wear them with a cashmere turtleneck.   The possibilities truly are endless.

Oversized/long Blazer

Oversized blazers have gained more and more popularity in recent years, similar to the rise of boyfriend jeans.  Just like the classic blazer, you’re going to want to start with

  • neutral colors like blues, blacks, and greys.

But because oversized blazers are, well, oversized, you can have a bit more fun with colors like think

  • reds, yellows, and pinks.

When choosing a long blazer, make sure to keep in mind one thing:  proportions.  When wearing an oversized top, you’re going to want to pair that blazer with a slimmer-fitting bottom.  I’m loving Everlane’s oversized black blazer this year, but you can’t go wrong with their glen plaid one either.

Denim/Chambray Shirt

A chambray shirt is a must-have in your classic closet. It’s just as versatile as a white button-down:  pair it with a black pair of denim or go full Canadian tuxedo and wear it monochromatically.  Denim shirts work well with any neutral layering scheme.  Try it under a white sweater; or wear it with a camel blazer.  And don’t be afraid to let a good chambray shirt stand alone on its own two feet.

Any of your favorite retailers are going to carry a classic-fit chambray shirt.  But you cannot go wrong with Gap’s perfect denim one.

Graphic Tee

Ok, ok.  I’m sure you’re asking, “are graphic t-shirts really classic tops?”  Yes ma’am, indeed they are.  Just like the long/oversized blazer, the graphic t-shirt is no longer a trend:  they just are part of any well-built, classic wardrobe.  Graphic tees are where we get to let our hair down a little bit and have some fun.  (And remember, “classic” is not synonymous with “boring”.)  Just like classic t-shirts, graphic ones can serve as the first layer of your outfit:  wear them under a blazer for a fun, chic look.  Or wear them alone with your favorite denim.

Companies like the Gap have innovated the classic t-shirt, making it a staple of their seasonal lines.   If you’re looking for something a little bit more on-trend, don’t forget Urban Outfitters.

Blouse

Ah, yes.  I would be remiss if I didn’t include the blouse to close things out.  Any and every woman should own a handful of blouses.   Just like t-shirts, crewnecks, and blazers, we’re going to want to start with

  • neutrals like blue, black, and grey; and
  • work our way outwards towards plaids, prints, and more colorful options.   (Are you sensing a theme yet?)

Just like the white button-down, blouses are seasonless and pair with just about everything.  Wear them alone with an A-line skirt or your favorite pair of slacks.  Dress them up with a blazer, or dress them down with a pair of distressed denim, the possibilities are again limitless.  If you’re looking to incorporate some new blouses into your wardrobe, start with J.Crew or the Banana Republic.  They’re both tried and true;  you cannot go wrong.

Essential Tops in Your Wardrobe

Alright ladies, those are essential tops every woman should have in their wardrobe.  Think I missed one?  Make sure to let me know in the comments below.

In case you missed it

Last weeks’ closet cleanse will help you audit your wardrobe as you look to introduce the basics like the tops we discussed above.

a new take on an old favorite—that’s today’s theme.  for my regulars, you know that “preppy” is my go-to style.  it’s a style i’ve loved and embraced since i was a child, and i don’t shy away from it as an adult.  today, i wanted to take a classic preppy outfit—a skirt and a blazer—and add a little twist to it.  this summer has been all about color and patterns.  last week we featured yellow jacket and shorts, and the week before, we went with a bright floral matching blouse and pants.   today, we’re taking a preppy blazer with a color pop and pairing it with a patterned pencil skirt.  (and don’t forget, we’re revealing another one of our favorite summer blockbusters.)

preppy blazer with a color pop

what a year it’s been.  i think a lot, if not most of us want a 2020 do-over.  (or maybe we’ll just scratch this one from the books.)  but as i’ve talked about on the blog a lot, one of the ways i’m keeping my spirits up is adding color to my wardrobe, as well as pattern mixing.  seem like trivial things, but i’ll tell you what, they’re not only lifting my spirits, but they’re keeping me engaged.  a “fashion distraction” as we’ve called it over here at style at a certain age.  and right now, that kind of distraction is a good thing.  and what better way to inject a little fun than to take your favorite style and add a little twist:  a pop of color here and a new, exciting pattern there.  try it.  you’ll like it.  i promise.

a pencil skirt & pink blazer

today, i’ve got a pink blazer in stretch linen from J.Crew.  i think J.Crew has knocked it out of the park with their summer line this year, and i’ve gotten a lot of use out of this blazer.  we’ve talked how to wear blazers a lot this summer.  they’re a great layering option, and depending on where you live and what you do, that could definitely be something to consider.  i’ve paired the blazer with a puff sleeve tee this palm print pencil skirt also from J.Crew.  floral and fauna patterns are in this year, and i’ve worn them liberally.

summer blockbuster: top gun

it’s kelly’s turn to reveal her favorite summer blockbuster.  and boy did she pick a great one:  Top Gun.  probably one of the greatest navy recruitment videos of all time, who didn’t want to fly a plane after they saw this movie?  and what a soundtrack:  where else are you going to hear Kenny Loggins and Eddie Van Halen back-to-back?   and did you know that the movie’s famous love scene was shot after the movie had wrapped

who’s exciting for Top Gun 2?  usually sequels disappoint, but everyone here at style at a certain age is excited for this one.  and hopefully, life will have returned to normal by the time of its release so we can actually see it on the silver screen.

once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away, we would regularly go to movie theaters.  it was a favorite pastime as a child that lasted all through my teens, twenties, thirties, and beyond. there was nothing more than mr. style and i loved to do on date night than head to the movies. many times we would grab a bite to eat before or after the movie. when we lived in San Francisco we loved to walk to the Kabuki theater which was a good two to three miles from our apartment. then saunter back home taking our time deciding which restaurant to frequent that night.  so, we’re going to do something fun this week:  the gang here at style at certain age are going to bring you our favorite summer blockbusters.  (don’t worry, we’re still going to talk fashion.  in fact, we’re continuing my quest for the perfect summer dress today!)

my favorite movie memories seem to revolve around those blockbuster movies that were released come summer. way back in the day summer was not only a time to get your swimsuit bod in shape to lounge around the pool during the day soaking up those rays. but once dusk set in it was time to gussy up and head to the movie theater. so i thought it would be fun to visit memory lane this week and revisit a few of our favorites. movies that is. maybe we can’t drive to the theater purchase a ticket, popcorn, and a drink. but we can stream movies, rustle up our favorite snack and plop in a comfy chair for the evening. heck, i’m looking forward to watching the blockbuster musical Hamilton that’s now playing on Disney!

anyone remember what they were doing June 20, 1975?  well, that was the premiere of a little movie that went by the name of Jaws. okay, okay it turned into a blockbuster movie that catapulted its director Steven Spielberg then twenty-six years old into the stratosphere of hollywood. but no one could have predicted that at the time. in fact, the crew on the set of Jaws nicknamed the movie Flaws for good reason. the movie was based on a popular book by Peter Benchley about a man-eating shark that terrorized a small summer beach town.

production commenced May 2, 1974 and was immediately plagued with problems. it was the first major movie production to be shot on the ocean. mechanical sharks were designed and created specifically for the movie but the prop sharks frequently malfunctioned causing delays. but there were other problems on set like the weather, sailboats drifting into scenes, and cameras getting soaked. original principal photography was scheduled for 55 days but in the end, the movie wrapped on day 159. Spielberg thought his fledgling career was over as no director had taken a movie 100 days over production.

the quest for the perfect summer dress

on my quest for summer dresses, i discovered this cute little number from J.Crew. the ribbon dress has pockets and also comes in black. it looks perfect on its own but the hot pink jacket also from J.Crew looks casually chic thrown over your shoulders.

anyone remembers attending Jaws in the summer of 1975? the movie came out the summer between my junior and senior year of high school and i went to the movie with my parents and my high school sweetheart. it was a tense two-hour experience that left me and millions of others deathly afraid of swimming in the ocean. and who could forget that screen score by John Williams? to this day da da. da da. da da da dum strikes fear in me.

a one-shoulder dress requires a strapless bra. summer outfits always need special lingerie so i stock up on nude or black racerback bras and strapless bras.

thanks for walking down memory lane with me today. and stay tuned all week long as all the members of Style at a Certain Age will share their blockbuster picks. and let me know what your favorite summer blockbuster is. wishing you a very happy Monday!

i still think fashion matters, and i still think looking our best is important.  so far this summer, i’ve been looking for an excuse to wear a blazer.  so much so, i wrote a post on how to wear a blazer this summer.  amazingly enough, Athens’ weather has been temperate this summer:  we’ve only broken the 90s a few times.  so, i’ve been able to get away with reaching for a blazer, and i’ll take it.  with that in mind, i want to build on Sunday’s post on denim and show you how i elevate a simple denim skirt for a classic, chic look.  we’re going to pair a denim pencil skirt with a classic linen blazer.

how to elevate a denim skirt

today, i’m pairing a denim pencil skirt from Nordstrom with a classic linen blazer from Talbots.  last week, i showed you how to put together a fresh preppy look with a pinstripe blazer with skinny jeans.  a very similar idea today:  the clean lines from the pencil skirt are accentuated by those of the blazer.  i’ve chosen a white one, but you could imagine giving the outfit a bit of a color pop by choosing a pink or blue one

i’m loving espadrilles this year.  i’ve put together a wide selection here, here, here, and here. they’re such a flexible sandal and can be paired with pants, shorts, or a skirt to give you an instantly chic look.

a classic linen blazer

i’ve been all about blazers this summer.  if it’s too hot where you are to pull one into your outfit, i understand.  but they’re a perfect layering piece for milder climates or for the days you’re bouncing inside and out.  i’m loving Talbots’ classic linen blazer this year:  you don’t have to twist my arm to wear linen.  but don’t forget to check out this classic pinstripe blazer if you’re looking for something with more visual interest.

a denim pencil skirt

as i said Sunday, a denim skirt is a staple any woman should have in their closet.  just like jeans, they’re so flexible and can be paired with anything to get literally any look.  today, i’ve chosen to elevate a denim skirt into a more classic look, but if you want to go totally casual, just like jeans, you can do so easily.

we kicked off the week talking about how to wear a blazer this summer. we’re continuing with that trend today:  we’re featuring a classic pinstripe blazer and skinny jeans.  i’m tapping into my inner prep today—my favorite style—because i’m feeling particularly good.  the sun is shining, summer is here, but even most importantly, so is my family.  a lot to still be thankful for.

a classic pinstripe blazer

it feels good to put on a pair of jeans and a blazer.  it really does.  today, i’m featuring a pinstripe blazer from Ann Taylor.  i’ve paired it with a flutter sleeve shell also from Ann Taylor.  the colors are a subtle neutrals with visual interest created by the pinstripes.  layering is useful even during the summer months:  going inside into an air-conditioned room for the warmth of the sun can be a sharp contrast.  and a sleeveless shirt with a blazer is a great way to combat the temperature change.

and skinny jeans

i’m loving these luxe high waist skinny jeans from Nordstrom.  they’re new, soft, and so comfortable.  i generally minimize the number of times i wear jeans during the summer, but i can see myself reaching for these on the regular.  they stay cool even on the hot summer days we’re now seeing in Athens.  if you love jeans, but tend to avoid them in the summer, i’d still recommend a pair of these.

summer is for sandals

i love espadrilles.  and these Verla platform sandals from Nordstrom pair perfectly with these ankle jeans.  keeping with the neutral theme, i’ve accented my OOTD with this leather bucket bag.  leather accessories are always a great way to give an outfit like a classic pinstripe blazer and skinny jeans that extra bit of class.
