One thing we talk about on the blog A LOT is wardrobe staples. But you might be wondering what a wardrobe staple is? Simply put, a wardrobe or closet staple (or essential) refers to clothing items you absolutely, positively, must own.
Typically, a wardrobe staple is a simple yet versatile piece that can easily be mixed and matched, dressed up or down. They’re timeless pieces that span decades and form the foundation of your wardrobe. Yesterday, we talked about a summer tank. Today, we’re talking about a satin slip-on skirt that’s oh-so versatile and can be styled in a number of ways.
I’m sharing 1 satin slip-on skirt 3 ways: from a casual day running errands to a night out with the hubs.
Today's featured item is a satin slip-on skirt from J.Crew
The skirt is modeled 3 different ways

Happy Monday, ladies! We're heading into some warm weather here in Athens. Sun is out and Spring is fully in bloom. Such a pretty sight to see. As you probably know, we're continuing on travel week today. I'm featuring 3 On-Trend Vacation Outfits I wore during my stay at The Ritz last week.
All 3 outfits are perfect for lunch, brunch, and any shopping expeditions you may have planned. And of course, they all feature a lovely pop of color.
Today's featured items are 2 dresses and a skirt from Banana Republic, Anthropologie, and FARM Rio
All 3 outfits are modeled
All outfits are shoppable via a text or image widget
The first outfit features a popover shirt dress from Banana Republic. The feel is great and it works perfectly as a neutral backdrop for accessories.
I went with the cutest handbag to add color to the outfit. Bamboo handles are in this year. (Honestly, when aren't they?)
Ramie Popover Shirt Dress (Banana Republic) | Bamboo Elisabetta Slouch Handbag (Mark & Graham) | Sandals (old Aqua, similar here and here) | Earrings (old Tory Burch, similar here, here, and here) | Sunglasses (old Prada, similar here)
My second outfit features this tunic dress from Anthropologie. Wear it alone or put it on top of a pair of denim like these frayed jeans from Frame.
Quick vacation style tip: if you're bringing a dress, bring a bottom like leggings or jeans. Two readymade outfits at your disposal.
Maeve Embroidered Tunic Dress (Anthropologie) | Mini Boot Raw Frayed Jeans (Frame) | Caged Raffia Tote Bag (Demellier) | Sandals (old, Banana Republic similar here and here) | Earrings (old, Tory Burch similar here, here, and here)
My final outfit features this printed skirt from FARM Rio. Such a fun outfit and perfect for both Spring & Summer.
I've paired it with a long sleeve, but you could obviously swap it for just about anything: a linen popover or button-down comes to mind. And depending on where the temps are, a short sleeve or sleeveless would work perfectly too.
Also, one more vacay style tip for the road: if you can fit it in your luggage, a tote is a travel essential. The perfect bag for a day at the beach or out and about shopping.
Tee (Ralph Lauren, ) | Our Stamps Linen Midi Skirt (Farm Rio) | Espadrilles (old, Michael Kors similar here and here) | Caged Raffia Tote Bag (Demellier) | Earrings (old Tory Burch, similar here, here, and here) | Hammered Bangles (Nest) | Sunglasses (old Prada, similar here)
Travel week kicked off yesterday. If you missed what I packed for The Ritz, make sure to click the title or image below to read the article.
Hello! It’s wonderful you’re here for my inaugural post on Style At A Certain Age! I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to share what I wore during my recent trip to Charleston, South Carolina. Packing for this trip was challenging for me for a couple of reasons: the forecast called for rain and cooler temps; plus, I haven’t done much sightseeing in the last few years which translates to I haven’t been wearing “going out” shoes for extended periods. This all amounted to packing for comfort, style, and possible rainy weather. Fortunately, our hotel was centrally located! So, I wanted to show you some of my best vacation outfits from the trip.
My husband Alex and I chose one of our three nights for a special dinner out. We chose a very highly recommended restaurant called 167 Raw. It’s a wonderful seafood restaurant, with super fresh seafood preparations, raw oysters, and chic cocktails. If you’re in Charleston, I highly recommend you make a stop at 167 Raw.
This ensemble is not a suit per se, as the blazer and the pants are not exact matches. But it works! A black blazer is a wardrobe staple. I get a ton of use out of this blazer; it’s perfect for dressing up a pair of jeans and it works perfectly over a dress or with a skirt.
Parke Blazer | Regent Blazer (similar) | Unstructured Blazer (similar) | Pintuck Camisole (similar) | Shirred Top (alternative) | Drapey Top (similar) | Cameron Slim Crop Pant in 4 Season Stretch | Cameron Pant in Bi-Stretch Cotton (similar) | Vince Camuto Enella Sandal | Vince Camuto Saprenda Sandal (similar) | Nine West Sandals (similar) | TSATSAS Tape Bag | Hobo Waver Wristlet (similar) | Hobo Brave Leather Clutch (similar)
With a classic little black suit, you can get creative with your choice of top. A strappy camisole is a perfect option. Another great option to achieve this look is with a drapey top, tucked in. I went with this top by Frame, from Nordstrom. It’s no longer available, but there is a similar version still available.
Straight-leg cropped pants in a heavenly four-season stretch fabric from J.Crew are a dream to wear. These pants are so versatile. They dress up beautifully, but they also look great with a t-shirt and denim jacket. The straight leg cropped fit is perfect for a petite frame and J.Crew’s Cameron Slim Crop Pant fits true to size.
My favorite shoe to wear with a little black suit is a strappy sandal, with a little bit of a heel. These Vince Camuto heels are super comfortable and easy to walk in for blocks!
For a classic neutral outfit, you can go with almost any color handbag you like. For this special evening out, I decided to go with the quietly elegant black Tape Bag by TSATSAS.
Fortunately, we did end up with a sunny day to stroll around the historic Broad Street neighborhoods of Charleston. You can’t help but be immersed in the history of Charleston and our nation, as you walk the cobblestone streets amongst the 18th and 19th-century architecture.
My favorite places to tour are the cemeteries and graveyards. This has a lot to do with the fact that cemeteries are quiet places; one can contemplate and get lost in imaginations of times long passed. The south has some of the most beautiful cemeteries; the spring flowers add color and the Live Oak trees draped in Spanish Moss really set the tone.
For our self-guided walking tour, we had beautiful sunny skies and warm spring temperatures. It was the perfect day to wear a skirt! Spring is my favorite time of year, especially for fashion. There are so many options with skirts, dresses, shorts, and jeans – you can mix them up with a variety of shirt styles to create fun, colorful, bright looks.
We started in the morning, so I have a denim jacket, which is my favorite go-to light jacket for Spring. I haven’t yet come across an outfit that doesn’t work well with a denim jacket!
Madewell Denim Jacket | Gap Denim Jacket (similar) | J.Crew Factory Button-up | J.Crew Factory Skirt | Quay Aviator Sunglasses (similar) | Whirlpool Aviator Sunglasses (similar) | Kingston Aviator Sunglasses (similar) | Puffy Crisscross Sandals (similar) | Crisscross Slide Sandals (similar) | Similar Olive-Colored Slides (similar) | Sydney Crossbody Bag | Transport Crossbody Bag (similar) | Transport Saddlebag (similar)
Gingham is one of my favorite prints all year long. But somehow as soon as Spring arrives, gingham comes to the forefront of my mind. This olive and white gingham button-up feels especially appropriate for the shoulder seasons, the color is just perfect for Spring.
This linen-cotton pull-on skirt from J.Crew Factory is a no-brainer for me. I have this skirt style in a few colors and this cream-color version is by far my favorite. As a neutral, the cream color will work with nearly every top in my closet. It’s lined and so comfortable – plus it has pockets! You will definitely see this skirt on repeat all Spring and Summer long.
These Vehla Dixie sunglasses are my new favorites. I love the lightweight tortoise frames. I especially love the lightly tinted, sage-colored lenses.
I haven’t walked for miles in closed shoes since the pandemic, so my feet have become more sensitive to shoes (anyone else have this issue?). So I went for an ultra-comfy pair of crisscross sandals.
These olive green sandals are from last summer, but I’ve given you similar styles.
A crossbody or shoulder bag is a must for a day seeing the sights. My favorite, most-used bags are all from Madewell. I absolutely love their leather goods, they make well-priced, quality bags, shoes, and belts that last for ages.
This is the Sydney Crossbody Bag. It has a removable shoulder strap for versatility. Its rounded, structured hobo shape is updated for this year, and its classic styling will be a go-to for years to come.
Those were some of my best vacation outfits from Charleston. If you’re looking for more fashion inspiration, make sure to check out Beth’s 5 ways to wear white sneakers this Spring.

Happy Tuesday, ladies! The week is underway, and Spring is officially here. The cherry blossoms have sprung in Athens, and the temps are hanging out in the 70s. We’ll take it, for sure. Hard to believe March is coming to a close. Where is the time going? (But I think that every year.) Time for some Ann Taylor, at least. I’m really feeling their Spring collection this year. Yesterday, we featured a tweed jacket/sheath dress combo. One reader said it had Jackie Kenndy vibes. I’ll take it. Today, we’re featuring a blue ruffle blouse I think you’re gonna like.
Today’s OOTD pairs a chambray ruffle blouse from Ann Taylor (limited sizes, similar here and here) with a white denim skirt (old, similar here here and here). To add a little twist, I layered the blouse with a striped tee. You could argue it gives the outfit a bit of a conservative feel, but I like the visual interest the stripes add.
And you know me: hard to pass up the opportunity to add a color pop with accessories. This red camera handbag (old, similar here and here) and shoes (old, similar here and here) did the trick.

Always love a denim skirt. So much so that it made my essential bottoms list this year. A white denim skirt (old, similar here here and here) is classic and will work with just about anything in your wardrobe. This one sits right above the knees but find a length that works for you.

Happy March, ladies! We made it through February and are headed straight into Spring. First and foremost, I wanted to say, “thank you”. This February was our best February ever over here at SAACA. And that’s solely due to your continued, daily support of what we’re doing here. To kick this month off, I’m styling a black skirt and top set from Scoop (available at Walmart) 2 ways. I’m going to show you how to dress that set up for an evening out at dinner or down for a day of shopping. And the best part is: all you have to do is swap your shoes!
Also—and I’m pretty excited about this—speaking of shoes, we’re featuring another real vs. deal. We’ll look at the iconic Hermès Sandals and I’ll show you some similar, more budget-friendly options. Happy Tuesday!
For our first style today, I’m pairing a black cap sleeve top with a black ruffle smocked skirt. Both are from Scoop available at Walmart. To dress this outfit up, I went with a pair of black strappy sandals from Vince Camuto. With the country opening back up again, I imagine many of you are spending evenings out again. This is the perfect outfit for a Spring night out.
This Kensington cross body bag and London cuff bracelet from Kurt Geiger really push the outfit over the edge and give it a little pizazz.
Black Cap Sleeve Top (3 colors, yellow, fiery red, and black) | Black Ruffle Smocked Skirt (3 colors, yellow, fiery red, and black) | Black Strappy Sandals (Vince Camuto) | London Cuff Bracelet (Kurt Geiger) | Kensington Cross Body Bag (Kurt Geiger) | Brown Flat Sandals (Sam Edelman) | Macrame Handbag (Scoop) | Wood Bangle (My Amazon Storefront) | Cat Eye Sunglasses from Scoop

Alright, now for the power of shoes and accessories. Same black cap sleeve top with a black ruffle smocked skirt. But this time, I want to dress it down—slightly. Perfect for resort wear or a regional travel day, I’ve swapped out my strappy sandals for brown flat ones from Sam Edelman. I also traded my cross body bag for a macrame handbag from Scoop—a real steal. It truly is amazing the power of accessories, and how they can change the nature of an outfit!

Alright, something a little fun today: real vs deal. We’re all familiar with the iconic Hermès Sandals. Totally gorgeous. Totally classic. Very similar to what I featured above. And are they not perfect for Spring? Today, I’ve rounded up four more budget-friendly dupes/copies of those sandals below.
We’re trying something new today: we’re running 2 posts at once. Click to see February’s top 5 reader favorites as chosen by you!
it’s fall y’all and time for one of our “definitive seasonal guides”. earlier this season, we rolled out our women’s definitive denim guide. today we’re talking about skirts. i’ve picked and compiled some of my favorite looks over the past few seasons and combined them into your single source of truth for skirts. that’s right: we’re talking midi-, maxi-, and everything in-between. because, well, who doesn’t love to wear a skirt in the fall? the weather has definitely cooled down here in Athens, which means i’m reaching for a sweater or two. but regardless of what you’re going to pair with your skirt, sit back and enjoy our women’s guide to skirts for the fall.
leapin’ leopard! yes, leopard print is still going strong this fall. and i for one am thrilled. this (similar) leopard skirt from [Talbots] has a forgiving waistband and on-trend pleats. love the midi-length which is perfect with pumps or boots. this skirt will be on style repeat all fall long as there are so many ways to wear it.
today, i paired the (similar) leopard skirt with a (similar) black cami and ivory silk blouse (old, similar here). the shirt could have been tied at the waist instead of tucked. but i wanted the (similar) belt from Versace to shine, so i opted for tucked. mixing high and low-end pieces is a style trick i’ve used for years. it works!
midi skirt 1 (Talbots) | midi skirt 2 (Ann Taylor) | midi skirt 3 (J.Crew)
today’s outfit is about taking the week head-on. for a classic, sophisticated look starts with a monochromatic black outfit. perfectly appropriate for the winter temps here in Athens, i am opting for a (similar) black turtleneck, (similar) black midiskirt paired with (similar) black boots. to amp up the sharp suiting look, i popped on a (similar) houndstooth blazer (last seen here and here).
wrap skirt 1 (Talbots) | wrap skirt 2 (Ann Taylor) | wrap skirt 3 (Nordstrom)
since i’m a big believer of having the basics on hand. those wardrobe workhorses you depend on to transition from outfit to outfit with ease. and span the seasons. i relied on this blue tee (similar here and here) to pull this outfit together. read more about my ‘back to basics’ series here. an adorable (similar) orange skirt is next. this skirt runs true to size. i’m wearing a size 8, and it fits to a T. the gold buttons, and A-line shape are what drew me to this skirt.
button front skirt (Talbots) | button front 2 skirt (Ann Taylor) | button front 3 skirt (J.Crew)
today’s ootd starts with a timeless (similar) Ponte pencil skirt in a bold color – apple red (similar in yellow)v. it’s tailored to perfection yet this skirt is so forgiving as it’s crafted from refined Ponte that skims your body and hides any imperfections. this (similar) pencil skirt is the perfect choice for a jam-packed day that starts with breakfast and a much-needed cup of joe. a multi-color braided trim tweed blazer (similar here) adds effortless sophistication. the addition of a classic denim shirt keeps this outfit polished yet playful.

a few weeks ago, we focused on all things separate. we showed you everything from how to wear matching separates to how to style the same separates two ways. it turns out i’m still separates obsessed. as much as i love summer dresses, the sheer possibilities separates provide you are endless, which is why i can’t get enough separates this summer.
i think sometimes we take separates for granted only because they’re our go-to for most of us. i’m willing to bet that we all wear far more pants, shorts, skirts than we do jumpers or dresses. but it’s worth pointing out, though, just how much fun separates really are, which is probably why they’ve become the norm and not the exception.

how cute is this pencil skirt in sequin floral? J.Crew really knocked it out of the park with this one. given how colorful it is, i can match it with virtually in pastel top i want. today, i’ve paired it with a pink linen rolled cuff tee also from J.Crew. but this outfit would work equally as well with a yellow halter or baby blue button down—your choice really.

summer is for sandals, and sandals are for summer. just like you, we’ve been all about sandals this summer and have tried to source as many as we can for you. i’m featuring a pair of (similar) strappy sandals, but ankle tie or slide sandals would work just as well. just like separates, the possibility space is nearly endless. what are your go-to sandals this summer?
linen tee | pencil skirt | strappy sandal | ankle tie sandal | slide sandal | wicker bag
a new take on an old favorite—that’s today’s theme. for my regulars, you know that “preppy” is my go-to style. it’s a style i’ve loved and embraced since i was a child, and i don’t shy away from it as an adult. today, i wanted to take a classic preppy outfit—a skirt and a blazer—and add a little twist to it. this summer has been all about color and patterns. last week we featured yellow jacket and shorts, and the week before, we went with a bright floral matching blouse and pants. today, we’re taking a preppy blazer with a color pop and pairing it with a patterned pencil skirt. (and don’t forget, we’re revealing another one of our favorite summer blockbusters.)
what a year it’s been. i think a lot, if not most of us want a 2020 do-over. (or maybe we’ll just scratch this one from the books.) but as i’ve talked about on the blog a lot, one of the ways i’m keeping my spirits up is adding color to my wardrobe, as well as pattern mixing. seem like trivial things, but i’ll tell you what, they’re not only lifting my spirits, but they’re keeping me engaged. a “fashion distraction” as we’ve called it over here at style at a certain age. and right now, that kind of distraction is a good thing. and what better way to inject a little fun than to take your favorite style and add a little twist: a pop of color here and a new, exciting pattern there. try it. you’ll like it. i promise.

today, i’ve got a pink blazer in stretch linen from J.Crew. i think J.Crew has knocked it out of the park with their summer line this year, and i’ve gotten a lot of use out of this blazer. we’ve talked how to wear blazers a lot this summer. they’re a great layering option, and depending on where you live and what you do, that could definitely be something to consider. i’ve paired the blazer with a puff sleeve tee this palm print pencil skirt also from J.Crew. floral and fauna patterns are in this year, and i’ve worn them liberally.

it’s kelly’s turn to reveal her favorite summer blockbuster. and boy did she pick a great one: Top Gun. probably one of the greatest navy recruitment videos of all time, who didn’t want to fly a plane after they saw this movie? and what a soundtrack: where else are you going to hear Kenny Loggins and Eddie Van Halen back-to-back? and did you know that the movie’s famous love scene was shot after the movie had wrapped?
who’s exciting for Top Gun 2? usually sequels disappoint, but everyone here at style at a certain age is excited for this one. and hopefully, life will have returned to normal by the time of its release so we can actually see it on the silver screen.

in terms of blog traffic, this was our biggest month ever over here at style at a certain age. from all of us here to all of you: a huge thank you! we continue our mission to bring you a fashion distraction, no matter what is going on in the world around us. it’s hard to believe that June came and went, but then again, i say that every month. to recap the June, we’re bring you the reader favorites, including lose weight over 50, as chosen by you. and as a little extra, we’ve got a new YouTube video—my top 5 summer dresses—debuting below.
all right, ladies! summer has arrived and with it a plethora of sleeveless tops, shorts, skirts and summer dresses. if there’s any time of year to get it in gear and get into tip-top shape it’s summer. many of you know i had a total knee replacement on April 6th. the months that preceded surgery were sedentary, to say the least so i definitely have my work cut out for me (again) to replace the layer of fat that decided to move on in with lean muscle and shed a few pounds. is it easy to lose weight after 50? no, it gets harder every year due to changing hormones and a slower metabolism. is it impossible to lose weight after 50? absolutely not. if we are determined to age with grace, strength, and beauty to lead an active and vibrant lifestyle you will have to tweak your diet as nutrition is 90% of the battle.
happy Monday, ladies! as my regular readers will know, home design and decor is one of my favorite things. a key component to this that often feels like a chore is organization. to me, organization comes before decorating because having a well organized home is the foundation of home design and decor. it provides the blank canvas that makes home decorating such a pleasurable experience. we’re starting a new series this week: how to stay organized. today, we’re doing a deep-dive into my kitchen.

my regulars know that when summer roles around, i don’t necessarily wear jeans as much as i would the rest of the year. but that doesn’t mean i won’t wear denim this time of year. there are so many good options, some of which i talked about recently in my latest YouTube video. i wanted to deep dive a bit more on that topic, so today we’re talking how to wear denim this summer. i’ve got 4 denim items that every woman should have in their closet.
today, i’m pairing a denim pencil skirt from Nordstrom with a classic linen blazer from Talbots. last week, i showed you how to put together a fresh preppy look with a pinstripe blazer with skinny jeans. a very similar idea today: the clean lines from the pencil skirt are accentuated by those of the blazer. i’ve chosen a white one, but you could imagine giving the outfit a bit of a color pop by choosing a pink or blue one.

i took the plunge and got a new haircut! but before we get into that, it’s why i love summer dresses this week on the blog. on Monday, we featured a maxi dress and yesterday a shirtdress. with so many different types of dresses and prints, it’ll be impossible to get through them all. but i think you’re going to love today’s OOTD: we’re giving you a glance of my new haircut and a shift dress for summertime.
