this sunday we’re taking a look at work wardrobe staples. i’m headed to NYC this week on a work junket so i’m packing nine-to-five outfits once again. plus, many of you have written asking for office attire inspiration. but it crossed my mind that if you don’t have the basics hanging in your closet it will be challenging to put a work-appropriate outfit together. did you know the number one reason you can’t find something to wear in the morning is that you don’t have the basics covered? yes, it always goes back to having the right wardrobe staples.
so i’ve put together my tried-and-true work basics to give you a jump start. and i’ve sourced new items for you. all you have to do is click through the shop the post widgets. last but not least, i’ve shared a video where i talk you through the basics. it’s as easy as 1-2-3!

Another great post and video – thanks Beth! You have a great wardrobe and your advice is spot on about having the right basics first. I hope you have a wonderful trip to my neck of the woods – maybe I’ll see you around town looking stylish and chic. By the way, the weather is delightful and promises to be perfect for your visit this week.
hi rebecca! i always love to pay a visit to your beautiful city. plus, one of our kiddos lives there and i always get to sneak in a visit. you better stop and say hello if you spot me on the city streets! xo
Safe trip–I head to DC tomorrow, and then western NC the rest of the week. I was in NYC the week the UN was in session and the president was there–traffic was crazy, because they had to clear lots of roads for security! I was glad to be walking! But NY is always great fun. Nowhere quite like it.
It should be beautiful, cool weather this week, since I’m heading to the mountainous part of our state. I’m primed. It’s true–over the years, I’ve amassed a lot of nice basics so that I can fairly readily put nice outfits together, and it’s so much less stressful when you have go-to pieces than if you have to analyze and think it all through for hours. I also love a simple sheath dress and nice pencil skirts for their classic style. The rest is all the fun touches and updates to a look. You look great in all of these.
the best part of NYC is walking the city streets! and the restaurants, and the view, and, well, it’s safe to say new york city is LOTS of fun. safe travels my friend. wasn’t the weather absolutely gorgeous this past weekend?! xo
Great looks. Especially the combination of the red blazer, blue blouse and mustard skirt. Beth, you do color like no other! You read my mind d… as I was intending to ask you to put together some guidelines for us! Internet problems yesterday prevented me from watching video and posting, so am off to the video now!
see, i do pay attention to what my readers want. i, too, had some internet snafu’s yesterday. i always forget what life was like pre-world wide web… xo
Hi. I’m new to this site and it looks interesting, and like it offers good advice. One request — and I know it won’t be popular — but our legs, especially knees, are no longer nice enough to be bare. Just sayin’
you say potato and i say potatoe. style is personal, just sayin’.
I said it would put be popular. You may have proved both of my points, which is fine, but I rest my case.
fashion is popular or unpopular – style is personal which is as it should be. case closed.
