My latest obsession is the dramedy series on Apple TV, Palm Royale, set in 1969 Palm Beach. Please tell me you are watching it! It’s where appearances, fashion, your bank account, and martinis are everything inside the super exclusive (and made-up) Palm Royale Country Club. Pageant queen, wannabe socialite, Maxine, (played by the amazing Kristen Wiig) from Chattanooga Tennessee, is trying to weasel her way into Palm Beach high society. But of course, there are a lot of bumps along the road for her to get there…which is what makes this show so much fun to watch!
The show itself is just visibly stunning in terms of the hair, makeup, costume, architecture, and other intricate details in keeping with this late 1960’s era. Besides the juicy plot of lifestyles of the super wealthy and all of the drama that comes along with this upper-class status that Maxine is so desperate to be a part of, I personally love the costuming and makeup the most.
It’s rich with psychedelic Pucci print tops, preppy Lily Pulitizer-like dresses, stripes, candy-colored caftans, basket-weaved bags, and statement sunglasses. And of course, my personal favorite, the hair and makeup!
Just like everything in fashion and beauty, it’s all CYCLICAL. Everything shows back up decades later but with little twists on them. Even Carol Burnett, 90, who I used to watch the Carol Burnett Show with my Granny back in the early 1980s, makes an appearance as the rich aunt Norma in a coma! I’m betting, this boujee, mod, Palm Beach-y look is about to explode everywhere. Especially with spring and summer right upon us, this look is perfect for the season!
So today’s post is to show how we can easily recreate this Palm Royale mod beauty vibe, but with a fresh 2024 take!

THE eye makeup trend of the 60’s was the “doe-eyed look.” The goal: is for your eyeballs to look big, round, and dramatic! It sometimes required fake eyelashes, lots of eyeliner, matte pastel shadows, and white eyeliner. Think Twiggy for the ultimate inspiration. And if you ever saw the look up close - it wasn’t ever perfect or blended that well. It was all about the stark drama of it all!
The eyebrows weren’t a huge focus and ranged from cleanly shaped and defined, to heavily filled in. Kind of anything goes here.
To recreate my mod eye look, I used a matte palette with cool purple + pink tones to go with my striped pink shirt, similar here 🙂 The key is to use a dark eyeliner pencil or a dark eyeshadow (what I did), and apply it in an arch over the crease line (to give a rounded effect) on the lid and and pair it with a pale matte eyelid color in between the arch and the lash line.
Then I used my easy black eyeliner pen along the lash line to create a major wing! I even dusted some of the darkest shadow from my palette on top of the liquid liner to soften it.
Lastly, I used my all time fave white eye pencil on my lower inner water line and slightly outside of the outer corners of the eye to extend my whites. Loads of mascara on the lower + upper lash line is necessary to maximize and highlight the eyeballs.
I didn’t do fake lashes for this, just layers and layers of mascara. Because even though it’s a dramatic everyday look, I was trying to tone it down and give myself a realistic Palm Royale look I could wear out and about!
Palm-approved EYE products I used:
Lid Primer - a MUST if you’re doing something that needs to keep its shape. The one and only, Nars Pro Primer Lid base, $26
Matte Shadow Palette - Huda Beauty Cool Matte Obsessions, $32
Liquid Eyeliner - L’Oreal Infallible liquid liner, Black, $10
White eyeliner - tarte Wide Awake pencil in white, $24
Mascara - L’Oreal Lash Paradise (I’m back in love with this drugstore mascara), $12
It was common in the beginning of the 60s to wear heavy powders and matte foundation. In this show, being tan seemed to be important too because they were in Florida. Also, because these ladies are all about “appearances” no blemishes or flaws could be seen so coverage was pretty full. Only the “hippie” characters in the show, like Laura Dern, wear a more sheer coverage of makeup.
The goal of the face makeup was to create a clean flawless canvas so to make sure the eyes popped. Soft blush was definitely needed in feminine shades of pinks, corals, and peaches to add definition. And again, lots of bronzer!
Palm-approved FACE makeup I used :
Foundation - It Cosmetics Nude glow CC cream in “light,” $47
Concealer - Natasha Denona HYGlam concealer in Rosy 2 - $30
Powder - Laura Mercier Loose powder in “Tone Up Pink” for brightening, $43
Blush - the iconic pink, Dior Rosy glow blush, $40 - feels so very Palm Beach!!
Bronzer - Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Sun Kissed glow cream bronzer in 2 medium, $58.
Self Tanner - the one and only to use for a full body realistic tan without the sun - St. Tropez Original Bronzing Mousse, $34. I go thru bottles of this stuff.
Lipsticks had a range from red, to pastel pinks, and corals. Most of the lipsticks were matte or satin and that’s the look we went for here.
I wanted a pink that looked expensive and beach-worthy. Thinking Lily Pulitizer-ish pink - but for the lips! So I used Buxom’s newest Full On Plumping lipstick (satin finish) in shade “Rosé bubbles,” $25. Kind of the perfect pink. Kept it simple with no lip liner.
The HAIR was big and poofy! Sometimes curled and definitely volume at the roots! I chose to wrap a scarf into my hair, but the turban was also big on the scene. Jump on getting yourself some great hot rollers, $69, if you haven’t already. It gives the best and biggest curls! Throw them in while you do your doe-eyed look and they’ll prob be ready after your makeup is done.
STYLE wise, let’s do a little high-end and low-end options! Pucci print tops : The real cape sleeve top, $1200, the similar Chico’s version, $90. // Lily Pulitizer boatneck mini dress : The real Lily one, $108, similar boatneck print from Trina Turk, $49 // Oversized statement sunglasses : The real Gucci cat eye ones, $1305 , similar large glasses from Amazon, $8.
What do you think about this Palm Beach style? Are you into it?
