| My fall skincare swaps: a gentler cleanser (La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser), a hyaluronic acid serum (The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5), a richer everyday moisturizer (CeraVe Moisturizing Cream), a heavy-duty cream for rough patches (First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream), a leave-on exfoliant to clear buildup (Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant), a tinted daily sunscreen (EltaMD UV Daily Tinted SPF 40), and an all-purpose balm (Aquaphor Healing Ointment). |
What You’ll Find In This Post:
Why I’m Rethinking My Routine Right Now
Fall doesn’t really arrive here in Georgia for weeks — we’re still sitting in the 90s this week! — but the air starts changing before the temperature does. Between the AC running nonstop and the humidity starting its slow exit, my skin usually figures out the season is shifting before I do: tighter after I wash my face, thirstier by the afternoon, no matter what the thermometer says outside.
So this year, instead of waiting until my skin was already unhappy about it, I wanted to get ahead of the shift. These are the four swaps I’m getting into place now, before I actually need them.
The Swaps
7 Things Worth Having in Place
1. The Cleanser Swap
Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser — La Roche-Posay
Why it works: If a cleanser leaves your face feeling tight, that’s the sign it’s built for the wrong season, not just a texture preference. This one is a cream formula built for normal-to-dry, sensitive skin — it takes off makeup and the day without stripping anything I still need.
Tip: splash with lukewarm water instead of hot — hot water pulls even more moisture out of skin that’s already fighting drier air.

2. The Hydration Add-In
Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 — The Ordinary
Why it works: This is a layer I didn’t bother with all summer, when the air itself was doing some of the work. A hyaluronic acid serum pulls moisture into skin before a moisturizer seals it in, and at under $10, it’s an easy first thing to add rather than replace.
Tip: apply it to slightly damp skin, straight out of the shower or after cleansing — on fully dry skin it has nothing to pull moisture from but the skin itself.
3. The Everyday Moisturizer Swap
Moisturizing Cream — CeraVe
Why it works: My summer moisturizer is a lighter lotion, and it’s simply not enough once the air actually dries out. This one is heavier, with ceramides to help hold the skin barrier together — the difference between skin that feels comfortable by 3pm and skin that doesn’t.
Tip: keep the lighter lotion around for the humid stretch we’re still in, and let this one take over once things actually cool off.

4. The Rough-Patch Rescue
Ultra Repair Cream — First Aid Beauty
Why it works: This is the one worth keeping on hand for elbows, knuckles, and the rough patches that show up once the air actually shifts — a genuinely thick, colloidal-oatmeal cream that’s overkill for a whole-face routine but exactly right for the spots that get forgotten.
Tip: keep a small jar by the sink for hands after washing, since hand skin dries out fastest once the weather turns.
5. The Buildup Reset
Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant — Paula’s Choice
Why it works: Skin holds onto more dead surface buildup once the air dries out, which is exactly what makes everything else in a routine — serum, moisturizer, SPF — sit on top instead of sinking in. This leave-on exfoliant is the step that clears the way for the rest to actually work, without the scrubbing that can irritate skin that’s already a little more sensitive this time of year.
Tip: start every other night rather than daily, and always follow with sunscreen the next morning — it’s a genuine exfoliant, not a rinse-off treatment.

6. The Non-Negotiable
UV Daily Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 — EltaMD
Why it works: Sunscreen is the one step that’s easy to quietly drop once it stops feeling like summer, and it’s the wrong one to drop — UV damage doesn’t take a season off just because the humidity does. This one has a sheer tint instead of a chalky cast and doubles as a light daily moisturizer, so there’s no real excuse to skip it.
Tip: keep it by the coffee maker or wherever the morning routine already happens — the products that survive fall are the ones that don’t need a new habit built around them.
7. The Everywhere Balm
Healing Ointment — Aquaphor
Why it works: This is the one that ends up doing three or four jobs at once — chapped lips, dry cuticles, a rough patch on an elbow, even the edges of a fresh manicure. It’s petroleum-based rather than fancy, which is exactly why it works on whatever shows up first once the air starts drying things out.
Tip: keep one tube in a bag and one by the bed — it’s cheap enough to stash in more than one place instead of hunting for it.

FAQs
Start with your cleanser and moisturizer — if either leaves skin feeling tight, that’s the first sign it’s built for a different season. A richer moisturizer and a gentler, non-foaming cleanser are usually the two biggest changes worth making.
A moisturizer seals in hydration, but a hyaluronic acid serum underneath actually pulls more moisture into the skin first — worth adding if your skin still feels dry after moisturizing alone.
Humidity tends to drop before temperatures do, and indoor AC or heating pulls additional moisture out of skin over the course of the day — it’s a different kind of dryness than summer sun exposure, and it usually calls for richer, more occlusive products even while it’s still warm outside.
Closing Thoughts
None of these products are dramatic changes — just a cleanser, a serum, exfoliant, and moisturizers doing slightly more than what got me through summer. It’s still hot here, but the air changes before the temperature does, and I’d rather have these in place already than scramble once my skin starts complaining.
