Happy Thursday, ladies! For those who don't know me, my name is Chelsea, and I am one of Beth's daughters-in-law. Today marks a special occasion—it's my first official blog post for *Style at a Certain Age,* and it also happens to be my birthday! In true birthday fashion, I’m celebrating by debuting this vibrant and colorful slip dress from Farm Rio. If this dress doesn’t shout "It’s my birthday!" then I don’t know what does!
I’ll be packing this stunning dress for a wedding in Mallorca, Spain, just a week from now. So today, I'm sharing tips on how to style a wedding guest dress that’s sure to impress, all while having a little fashion fun along the way!

I just got married this past New Year’s Eve, and if there’s one thing I learned, it’s the importance of following the wedding dress code. Keep this in mind when selecting your next wedding guest outfit! Some brides today request a specific color palette, but in most cases, you just need to pay attention to whether the event is cocktail or black-tie—trust me, there’s a big difference!
For the wedding I’ll be attending in Mallorca, Spain, the dress code is cocktail attire, so this vibrant Farm Rio dress from Nordstrom will be perfect for the occasion.

Cocktail Dress: A knee-length dress designed for semi-formal events, offering a stylish and elegant look that's perfect for evening occasions.
Black-Tie Dress: A floor-length gown for formal events, embodying sophistication and glamour, typically in dark or neutral tones.
When your dress is as colorful as the one I’m packing, minimal accessories are key—but I still love adding a wow factor! These earrings from Anthropologie were a must-have to complement this floral-themed dress. I plan to wear my hair up to really showcase the earrings and enhance the neckline of the dress. It's all about balancing bold prints with just the right touch of sparkle!

Choosing shoes for a wedding is always the hardest part for me! I love a tall heel, but comfort is key when you’re dancing the night away. Today, I’ve paired the dress with simple black strappy heels from Steve Madden, but I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of the heels I plan to wear from Anthropologie—they should be here tomorrow. Fingers crossed they’re as comfy as they are stylish because they’re sassy, classy, metallic, and absolutely perfect for this dress!
*Pro Tip:* Always break in your wedding shoes before the big event to avoid any discomfort on the dance floor.

This morning, Kelly shared a Labor Day outfit from Loft. Click the title or image below to read the article.
Oh, to be young, tall, and slim! You look beautiful in that dress, and it is perfect for an August destination wedding. As an older, shorter, and most definitely stouter-than-you lady, I stay away from prints, but on you that dress is perfection. Happy Birthday!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Prints can be fun to play around with when it comes to fashion!
Welcome and happy birthday, Chelsea!
You look just stunning in that dress and the earrings are perfect. I’m sure the Anthro metallic shoes will be an elegant pairing. Have fun in Spain!
Thank you for the warm welcome!
Lovely! The colors are so vibrant and fun! Perfect for Spain.
Thank you, I agree! I think the colors will be perfect for this wedding!
You and Kelly could wear a paper bag and look terrific! Welcome to the blog and congratulations on your first post.
You are too kind! Thank you for the warm welcome!
Congrats on your first post!
It was fabulous and looking forward to more.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful! Yet, did you say the event was cocktail and then described knee length as appropriate. Semi formal was long dress? I’m confused since I had this same dilemma last fall. Opted for knee length……..
Hi, Thank you! In my opinion I think cocktail can be both knee length and long, but ultimately the fabric and style of the dress determine how formal it is. I think the one I am wearing here could potentially work for black-tie if I dressed it up with accessories! I hope this helps!
Happy Belated Birthday!.
Just a word of experience. Find out how far you will be walking in Mallorca and ask if the surface is cobblestone. Walking on cobblestone is not like walking on pavers or concrete. You might want to take a pair of sneakers and change once you arrive at the venue. Have a wonderful time.
Thank you! That is a good idea and thing to consider, I will be bringing some sneakers with me so I will definitely keep that in mind!
Welcome Chelsea! Love your post and the dress is gorgeous and looks lovely on you! Enjoy Spain!
Thank you for the warm welcome!
Welcome Chelsea and Happy belated Birthday! Great first post. Loved your dress and enjoy for trip. We have a family wedding this fall and these ideas are so helpful. Thank You!
