7 Summer Style Mistakes That Make You Look Older

Wearing Oversized Clothing That Ages You

When it comes to looking polished and modern, the right outfit can take years off your appearance. But even the most stylish women can fall into a few common summer style mistakes that unintentionally age their look. Don’t worry—these are easy to fix, and I’ve got you covered. Summer style mistakes come in many shapes and forms, but the number one offender is wearing oversized clothes.

Mistake: Thinking looser equals more flattering.
Fix: Choose structured, breathable pieces that define your shape.

👗 Outfit Upgrade:
Swap the shapeless tunic for a fitted dress or a tailored shirtdress.
✔️ Try: Eyelet Flare Dress, J.Crew Linen Blazer over a tank + flare pant

Wearing Too Many Neutrals That Wash You Out

These summer style mistakes aren’t just aging—they’re also keeping you from feeling your best.

Mistake: Dressing head-to-toe in beige, taupe, or oatmeal.
Fix: Add color near your face or through playful accessories.

👗 Outfit Upgrade:
Pair neutral pants with a vibrant blouse or wear a colorful sundress that makes your skin glow.
✔️ Try: Talbots Hibiscus Poplin Shirt, J.McLaughlin Printed Maxi Dress

Clinging to Outdated Capris

Mistake: Mid-calf cuts that widen your silhouette.
Fix: Go for ankle-grazing or cropped straight-leg pants.

👖 Outfit Upgrade:
Choose polished ankle-length pants with stretch or crisp cropped trousers with a defined waist.
✔️ Try: Spanx Stretch Twill Pants, Quince European Linen Pants

Ignoring Undergarments

Luckily, every one of these summer style mistakes has a simple, chic solution.

Mistake: Letting panty lines, saggy bras, or no-shape slips show.
Fix: Invest in the right base layers to smooth, lift, and support.

👗 Outfit Upgrade:
Under every summer dress, layer a lightweight slip or wear seamless shapewear shorts.
✔️ Try: Honeylove SuperPower Short, Wacoal Perfect T-Shirt Bra, Commando Slip

Choosing Comfort Over Style in Footwear

Mistake: Shoes that say “retired mall walker.”
Fix: Chic and comfortable footwear exists—promise.

👡 Outfit Upgrade:
Pair a sundress with platform espadrilles or a cropped pant with leather slides.
✔️ Try: Veronica Beard Leather Mule Sneakers, Franco Sarto Platform Wedge, Steve Madden Boardwalk Slide

Avoiding Sleeveless Because of “Imperfect” Arms

Mistake: Believing coverage = confidence.
Fix: The right sleeveless cut can flatter and cool. And it doesn’t hurt to add body lotion that targets crepey skin. Think of it as a tool in your toolbox, not a definitive solution. My favorites:

Maelys B-Flex Lift Arm Cream | Crepe Erase Body Firm | Gold Bond Body Corrector | Westmore Beauty Body Coverage Perfector

👗 Outfit Upgrade:
Choose sleeveless tops with wide straps, structured shoulders, or flutter sleeves
✔️ Try: J.Crew Pintuck Top, Halogen Pointelle Shell, Quince Linen Tank

Common Summer Style Mistakes Women That Make You Look Older: Skipping Accessories Entirely

Mistake: Bare-bones looks that fall flat.
Fix: Use accessories to add personality and polish.

👜 Outfit Upgrade:
Start with gold hoops, a raffia tote, or a lightweight scarf—even better if there’s color or texture.
✔️ Try: J.McLaughlin Raffia Tote, Kendra Scott Statement Earrings, Madewell Summer Scarf

👠 Beth’s Tips: Summer Style That Actually Works at 50+

1. Stop overthinking your arms.
I’m 66. I lift weights, head to Pilates, and wear a weighted vest when I walk—but yes, my arms are fighting the crepey skin fight. Aging is normal. Sleeveless is allowed.

2. Hemlines matter.
A capri that cuts your calf will always age your look. Try an ankle-length pant—it’s sleek, modern, and way more flattering.

3. Don’t dress for your past.
You’re not the woman you were in your 30s—you’re better. Dress for the woman you are now (and the life you’re loving).

4. Be strategic with fabric.
If your clothes wrinkle the minute you sit down, skip them. Opt for cotton poplin, chambray, or Tencel blends—they breathe like linen but hold their shape all day. Effortless and polished.

5. Polish comes from intention.
A belt, a cuffed sleeve, a tuck—these little tweaks take you from “just threw it on” to “effortless style icon.”

🧠 FAQ: Summer Style and Looking Your Best

Q: What are the biggest summer style mistakes that make you look older?
A: Baggy silhouettes, washed-out colors, and old-school capris top the list. This post gives fresh, flattering alternatives.

Q: Should I wear sleeveless tops over 50?
A: 100% yes. Focus on fit, fabric, and your own comfort. Your arms don’t need to be perfect to be seen.

Q: How can I look younger with summer fashion?
A: Opt for modern silhouettes, intentional color pops, and thoughtful accessories. And skip anything that feels like a throwback to 2002.

Q: What summer shoes are stylish and comfortable?
A: Look for espadrilles, leather slides, platform sandals, or sleek sneakers. Your feet can be happy and fashion-forward.

💬 Closing Thoughts

Looking youthful isn’t about trying to be 30—it’s about dressing with confidence and clarity. A few smart swaps, some intentional styling, and the willingness to let go of what’s not serving you? That’s the secret. Because style doesn’t have an age limit—but your closet mistakes should.

Great tips for us ladies over 60. I like to wear sleeveless when it’s hot but have been thinking maybe I shouldn’t because of the old saying about that. Thanks for reassuring me. Love your post.

  4. Susan Shupp

I feel anyone over 40ish shouldn’t wear dresses that are way above the knee. Knee length looks polished and doesn’t look like you shopped in the Jr. section. Just my opinion though. s

  5. SC Lady

Nobody is wearing crop pants anymore? At 5’11, I have long legs and always liked the look of crop pants..,

    1. Patricia V

  7. Caroline

Moved to Texas & had to start wearing sleeveless & shorts again @ 63. Hardest thing to adjust to was not layering up like we did in Midwest. But I like a capri for out to dinner or appointments because of the air conditioning.

    1. Beth Djalali

Texas will definitely break you of your layering habit real quick! 🔥 Sleeveless and shorts become a survival tactic, not a fashion choice. I hear you on the capris though—indoor A/C is basically winter in July.

  8. Diana K Bongard

  13. Geraldine Knight

What about overweight women! With fat tummys or big breasts etc… Some of those clothes are not very cool or up to date. A peasant top does not suit an older woman – a longline tunic top would be a lot more flattering. Just thinking I’m in early 70s but wouldn’t wear any of your clothes except the white trousers.. Sorry🙏

    1. Tamara

      Respect, same here. Help!
