Welcome back to one of my favorite topics - Youth boosting makeup + skincare hacks - for part 2 of 2. If you haven’t read my first installment here from last week, make sure you do so! I’m continuing the conversation on easy and very effective ways to do more to positively enhance our aging faces. So read on for part 2 of Age-Defying Makeup and Skincare Tips.
Like I mentioned in the first post, you might want to reconsider your “go-to” makeup and skincare items you have relied on in the past. If you’ve been using the same things for over 3-5 years now (looking at you pink + green tube of mascara), here’s your sign to update at least one or two of them. I guarantee that if you open yourself up to some new ideas, you’ll be surprised how good it could make you feel.

And here’s the great thing about makeup - even a millimeter of difference on a face - fatter lashes thanks to a new mascara, or a happier complexion from trying a new blush color, can make a positive impact! So let’s move onto a few more ideas you can absolutely try out to revive an aging face…
I will die on this hill - dewy luminous skin will always look more youthful than flat matte skin. ALWAYS.
If you don’t want to bother with using any actual highlighters to achieve this, then make sure you are using a skin primer with some illumination OR a foundation that creates a dewy healthy skin look.
I reeallly like the Natasha Denona HyGen Energizing + Hydrating Primer Serum, $48. If you apply a layer of this before your regular foundation, it just gives off the most gorgeous skin glow that is hard to describe, but trust me, it’s beautiful. Can you tell by my photo above the glassy and iridescent effect it has?
It also looks stunning underneath lightweight tinted moisturizers and BB creams as well. It has a slight tackiness at first, but then as your foundation is applied, it disappears and you can tell that it felt that way because it’s now gripping on tight to your makeup!
There are quite a few dewy foundations I switch out between, but my go-to will be the one you all are all sick of hearing me talk about, but it’s the it Cosmetics Nude Glow CC cream,$47, in shade “medium” for me for summer. If you want something less expensive to try, Maybelline Fit Me Dewy foundation, $10, is a nice option.
I know my oily gals are cringing, but be thankful for that oily skin! As long as you mattify it in the right areas, and keep some untouched from powder, it will serve you well. The holy grail of moisturizers for you in my opinion, is the CeraVe Ultra Light Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30, $13. It creates a gorgeous blurred skin that controls oil nicely, makes your foundation mattify just right, and is well priced!
This is a wild trick of 3 steps that I hadn’t done before until just recently after watching a Scott Barnes reel on Instagram! (Jennifer Lopez uses him as her makeup artist for many red carpet events for context) Check out my before and after pic a little further below where one eye is completed with these 3 steps and the other is bare…
He shared that instead of relying on a traditional eye cream, if you apply the Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick, $6, before you apply your concealer, it makes for the ultimate hydration and primer for your concealer! Ladies, I have been doing it ever since with the following product cocktail and it WORKS!! It even helps prevent concealer creasing AND the stick contains SPF 30!!
Once you apply a layer of the Aquaphor stick under your eyes and rub in gently, then you should apply your fave concealer and press it in with a kitten paw concealer brush, $7. Mine is of course the Natasha Denona HyGlam Brightening + Hydrating concealer, $30, I talk about all the time. I wear shade RN2.
Then you must set with a light film of translucent loose powder using a powder puff to push in the powder. This is important - don’t use a brush to swipe, use a puff and a rolling motion over the concealer for maximum staying power. I buy these great triangle puffs in bulk from Amazon that fit perfectly under the eye, unlike a round one. Searching for an incredible loose powder? Try the Huda Beauty Easy Bake Powders, $38. I switch off between shades “Cherry Blossom” + “ Pound Cake” on myself.
Listen up ladies. You may think expensive trips to the salon to dye your grays, or buying expensive wrinkle creams or Botox is keeping you appearing youthful. But in reality, you might want to be focusing on your teeth! Tooth discoloration is just a de facto sign of aging.
There have been multiple studies that show the negative impact of what a frail yellow smile does on how old others perceive someone to be. Whiter teeth symbolize health and wellness, which usually equates to being found more attractive, youthful, and even trustworthy.
It’s one of THE easiest ways to take a few years off and there are so many options out there.
Anyone can easily pick up teeth whitening strips at the drugstore or on Amazon. The Lumineux brand, $35+ gets great ratings across the board and I’ve got the whole family using them right now! After just 3 uses, I can tell a considerable difference in whiteness.
When we smile, the muscles we use to do so naturally lift the face, so do so with whiter teeth!
Mascara is probably one of the top 3 products I won’t leave the house without wearing because it automatically makes my eyes look more alive. There are a gazillion options out there of course, so sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to find the best one. Here are 3 things you could be doing to make your eyes pop when it comes to a fading lash line…
If you have frail brittle lashes, condition them at night with some castor oil. I’ve been using the Sky Organics brand, $23 for a couple years now and really like it. You can apply it on a clean face before bedtime on your brows and lashes. I simply rub in a tiny bit onto my lashes with my finger to condition both - it’s that easy. Consistency with this stuff is key of course - you’ll notice that your mascara will magically seem to perform better after a couple weeks bc your lashes are just healthier!!
If you need more length to your lashes, please use an eyelash curler before you apply mascara. I preach and preach on this. No, it will NOT break off your lashes. You should be gently squeezing and pulsing with the lash curler and it does the job for you. If it’s been awhile since you put down the curler, pick it back up. I highly recommend the iconic Shiseido one,$23. Once you apply that mascara, you’ll be amazed at the benefits - I promise.
Lastly, if you want a mascara that delivers insane lashes, give the affordable Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High mascara, $12 a try. It’s easy to find at most drugstores and try it in the Cosmic Black shade for a big impact!
A couple of other youth-boosting tips that don’t have anything to do with makeup that I do…
There’s something about a few extra necklaces and bracelets worn together that make a gal just shine and stand out! I’m wearing two Bauble bar necklaces here - this 18K gold choker tennis necklace, $148, that has become a jewelry layering staple, and their delicate mother of pearl initial necklace, $38. And for bracelets, Bauble Bar has so many options to stack your bracelets with personalized, bangles, and fine jewelry ones!
Although flat one length hair can look very chic, it does make a face appear more severe and drags down a face visually. Adding a couple layers to short or long hair, provides movement and volume to hair which always give off vibrant youthful vibes.
I promise, you’ll instantly feel happier and won’t care how old you look!! Oh if I could bottle up the way I feel when my dog, Taco, looks at me with those big brown eyes 😉 Can you tell I just wanted a reason to put my dog in this post??! Ha!
Color makes people happier when they look at you. Again, black clothing looks chic and yes we need those staple neutral pieces, but it doesn’t do much for making you look alive. Bonus points for puff or flutter sleeves to provide some youthfulness! Similar tops to my tangerine one found here on Anthropologie, $128, and here on The Loft, $32.
I’d love to hear which products or which techniques you will try to update your beauty routine with after reading these two posts - Your comments truly keep me going!

Hi Jen,
I’ve recently discovered Jones Road Beauty, the Face Pencil. I have several in different shades that help with concealing under eye shadows and slight discoloration on my face. I love the crayon type point that can be sharpened to a fine point to be used with precision.
Ohhh that sounds like a magic wand for the face! Thanks for the recommendation – I just received a few Jones Road products I’m currently trying out now
I love reading Jennifer’s make posts. I buy some products she recommends. The post before this one was great!!!!😊. I am 80 years old and love makeup and dressing as a friend said PUT TOGETHER.

Hi Jen that’s for all your awesome tips!
I’m wondering if you could recommend a product for crepey eyelids?
