Happy Monday, ladies!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend and are rested as we head into a new week.  I spent the whole weekend working in the yard—boy am I pooped!  Using muscles I forgot existed.  But I love this time of year, I really do.  It’s such a joy to open the porch back up and sit outside during the evenings.   Today, I’ve got the loveliest 2022 tiered midi dress from Neiman’s.   And in a lot of ways, it builds on yesterday’s post, 4 Perfect Spring Color Combinations.  You’ll see why.

2022 tiered midi dress

I’m loving olive green this year.  Today’s outfit is a matchy-matchy pairing between an olive green linen shirt andtiered green midi skirt —both available at Neiman Marcus.  I really been treating olive green as a neutral this Spring, as it takes to a color pop so well.  (Hello, pink.).

Suede sandals

I went with a pair of suede sandals from Stuart Weitzman (old, similar here and here).  But I could easily see swapping out the sandals for a pair of slides, mules, or loafers.

Accessories

The station necklace is from Tory Burch (old, similar here and here).  Loving her this year as my email subscribers well know.  And how cute is this tan handbag?  Tan and olive green go together like peas and carrots.  (Old carrots, I guess?  Maybe a bad analogy.)

Two alternative ways to wear it

For those of you that read 4 Perfect Color Combinations for Spring, know that drab/olive green & pink was my first pairing.  I decided to rework 2 of those outfits with today’s midi skirt to show you its flexibility.  Here’s what I came up with.

Happy Sunday, ladies!  A lot of exciting things happening on the blog over the past few days.  As many of you know, Kelly joined us as a regular contributor.  Stay tuned:  Tuesday, she’s gonna share with us her first Daily Look.  In the meantime, back to normally scheduled programming.  Today, we’re talking—the perfect Spring color combinations

For some context—one of my favorite posts to create this year was  These 5 Colors Are In For Spring.  So I decided to challenge myself:  pull out interesting color combinations from that post and create outfits using only Talbots’ new arrivals.

Perfect Spring Color Combinations

I came up with 4 color combinations and 2 outfits each, totaling 8 outfits.  My basic idea was to take a bold, trending color and pair it with a neutral.  (I’m treating olive green and blue as neutrals.)    Here are the combinations:

  • pink & olive green
  • purple & white
  • orange & black
  • yellow & blue

My real goal, today, is to show you new and interesting ways to add color to your wardrobe.   Sometimes that introduction can be subtle through shoes and/or accessories.  Sometimes it can be direct.  Either way, let’s see what I came up with.

Pink & green

Outfit 1

The star of the first outfit is a casual linen blazer/knit shift dress combo—perfect layering option for spring.

Style tip:  Introduce colors into your Spring layers.  You can always take them off.

Casual linen blazer | Knit shift dress | Suede espadrilles | Rattan crossbody bag

Outfit 2

Loving these pink slim ankle jeans.  Same strategy as above:  the color combo comes by pairing the pants with a green utility jacket.  You know I can’t resist a utility jacket.

Twill jacket | Eyelet sleeve ballet neck tee | Slim ankle jeans | Suede platform espadrilles | Rattan crossbody bag

Purple & white

Outfit 1

For our second color combination, I went with a classic neutral base: white linen band collar popover and dark wash, everyday relaxed jeans.  Super simple, and stands perfectly alone.  Add a pair of loafers, and you’ve got almost a preppy look.

For my pop of color, I went with a ruffle denim jacket.  Loving lavender this year.

Ruffle denim jacket | Everday relaxed jeans | Linen band collar popover | Soft Nappa loafers | Wicker flip lock bag

Outfit 2

Our second outfit introduces color directly into our base with a purple scoop neck hem tee.  I went matchy-matchy with my shoe selection—a common pattern in this post.   Add a classic denim jacket and you can’t go wrong.

Scoop neck hem tee | Relaxed chinos | Classic denim jacket | Becca tie pebble flats | Wicker flip lock bag

Orange & black

Outfit 1

Now for the third combo in from perfect Spring color combinations.  Again, I’m beginning with a classic neutral base:  a white, cozy cush sweatshirt and a pair of black crops

I love cardigans for Spring, so I had to figure out how to introduce one into today’s post.  I went with this super cute fringe one—the details are so fun.  Orange is a bold color, but again, because I introduced it in my layers—I can always take it off during the day.

Fringe cardigan | Cozy cush sweatshirt | Perfect crops | Canvas espadrille wedges | Python leather crossbody bag

Outfit 2

Personally, this is my favorite outfit I put together.  I love, love, love the orange/black combo is as.  And I really feel this outfit is bold but still wearable by just about anyone.  I’m really feeling the dress/jacket combo this Spring, and this shift dress is just the cutest.

Yellow & blue

Outfit 1

Our final color combination is yellow & blue.  My first outfit will take you from Spring well into Summer.  I’m a huge fan of the matchy-matchy shirt/shoe combo.  And shorts finally make an appearance!

Linen collar popover | Chambray jogger shorts | Izzy knot Nappa espadrilles | Wicker flip bag

Outfit 2

I would be remiss if I did not feature a floral dress, and this jersey midi dress would be perfect for a graduation or brunch.   The yellow cotton blazer is bright, bold, and beautiful—brings a smile to my face imagining wearing this out.

For those of you who caught Sunday’s Talbots’ Spring new arrivals capsule wardrobe, this is the companion piece.  I debated whether to run the two together in one mega-post, but decided to split them up.  Last weekend, I went through Ann Taylor’s Spring new arrivals, and I’ve put together a capsule wardrobe.  The name of the game is the same as it was this weekend.   From 15 different items, I’ve put 5 different outfits together.  The items include:

Here are the rules I tried to follow when selecting items:

Remember, I’ve only provided 5 potential outfits.  The beauty of capsule wardrobes is that they can be mixed and matched in so many different ways.  Sky is the limit, really.  So let’s see what I came up with.

Ann Taylor Spring New Arrivals

Crocodile Tote | Metro Short | Straw Clutch | Ponte Split-Neck Top | Pleat Front Top | Gingham Swing Jacket | Block Heel Sandal | Suede Mules | Straw Loafer Slides | Essential Black Shirt | Moto Jacket | Crop Pant | Chambray Paperbag Ankle Pant | Stitch Sweater | High-Rise Skinny Jeans

Shop the capsule wardrobe (click below)

Ann Taylor outfit 1

I absolutely love Ann Taylor’s essential shirts.   So choosing one was a no-brainer.  I imagine most of you have a black button-down and light wash jeans.  But what really makes this outfit is the gingham coat and the suede mules.  Perfect for a night out.  But swap the gingham jacket for the moto one, and you’ll be living even more on the edge.

Ann Taylor outfit 2

Simply Spring.  That’s all I have to say about our second outfit.  Loving the soft elegance of the Ponte split-neck top paired with these chambray paper bag ankle pants.  Don’t like monochromatic blue?  No problem.  Swap the shirt for the white pleat front top, and you still maintain the essence of this outfit.  The tan crocodile tote goes with all of the outfits I’ve put together—animal prints and textures are neturals!

Ann Taylor outfit 3

Classic white.  Cannot beat it.  Here, we’ve kept the chambray paper bag ankle pant pants from above but instead paired them with the pleat front top and moto jacket.  Don’t worry, the sassiness of the jacket is subdued by the block heel sandal.

Ann Taylor outfit 4

The simplest outfit of them all:  a black stitch Sweater and high-rise skinny jeans.  Can’t touch the classics, really.  But how perfect are the straw clutch and Suede Mules together?

Ann Taylor outfit 5

I’m so loving these straw loafer slides, I had to include them.  They too work with just about any of the combinations above and subdue just about any outfit you could put together from this capsule wardrobe.

This is the first outfit with shorts.  Ann Taylor’s metro short is conservative enough for most of us and definitely worth considering if you’re in the market.

I love Talbots.  That’s no secret.  And apparently you, my readers, do too.  Almost every month, without fail, Talbots is the most popular retailer on the blog.  Hands down.   So, we’re gonna try something new today.  I’ve spent the past few days combing through Talbots’ Spring new arrivals, and I’ve put together a capsule wardrobe.   From 14 different items, I’ve put 5 different outfits together.  The items include:

Here are the rules I tried to follow when selecting items:

  • Must be Talbots.
  • Must be new arrivals.
  • Should be classic and wearable next year, and years to come.

Most of you are familiar with what I mean by “classic”.  Think lots of neutrals, fits, cuts, and styles that defy trends.  While bold and bright colors are in this year, I shied away from them today in favor of whites, blacks, and tans for example.

So without further adieu, let’s see what I came up with.

Talbots Spring New Arrivals

Nappa Wedges | Perfect Tote | Nappa Loafers | Espadrille Flats | Vachetta Mule | Bateau Neck Tee | Drawcord Shirt Jacket | Twill Knit Blazer | Denim Shirt Jacket | Button Detail Popover | Smocked Blouse | Wide-Leg Pants | Relaxed Jeans | Slim Ankle Jeans

Shop the capsule wardrobe (click below)

Talbots outfit 1

The first outfit stars a navy twill blazer.  A navy blazer is part of any classic wardrobe and works perfectly with the simple combination of an olive drab neck tee and slim jeans in a medium wash.  And how about these leather mules?  Absolutely loving them.

Twill Knit BlazerBateau Neck TeeSlim Ankle JeansPerfect ToteVachetta Mule

Talbots outfit 2

The second outfit begins with a neutral base:  I paired a black and white smocked blouse with black wide-leg trousers.  The trousers are about as “edgy” as this wardrobe gets today, but I have been and will continue to be a fan.  The wedges continue the matchy-matchy feel of the outfit.

Denim jackets are true heroes of any classic transition wardrobe, including this one.  So to add visual interest, I added a light-wash denim shirt jacket.  It lightens the outfit up dramatically.  (Imagine the difference if I were to have gone with a dark-wash.)

Denim Shirt JacketSmocked BlouseWide-Leg PantsNappa WedgesPerfect Tote

Talbots outfit 3

The third outfit is preppy through and through.  I’m bringing back the navy twill blazer from outfit 1.  This time, though, I paired it with a blue popover and white denim.  Add a pair of navy loafers and you’re a full-on prepster, if only for a day.

Twill Knit BlazerButton Detail PopoverRelaxed JeansNappa LoafersPerfect Tote

Talbots outfit 4

Outfit 4 demonstrates keeps the base from outfit 1 but swaps the jacket, shoes, and bag.  It features a tan utility jacket and snakeskin espadrilles.  (Remember, animal skin functions as a neutral.) This outfit really demonstrates the impact accessories and outerwear can have on an outfit.

Drawcord Shirt JacketBateau Neck TeeSlim Ankle JeansEspadrille FlatsPerfect Tote

Talbots outfit 5

Compare outfit 3 with this one:  the only thing different is the jacket.  Instead of a blazer, I’ve gone with the utility jacket.  And what a difference it makes.  The outfit stops feeling “preppy” and starts feeling more, “I’m ready to take on the world thank you very much.”

And that’s the fun of capsule wardrobes, really.  If you begin with a small but classic set of tops, bottoms, shoes, and jackets, you can create so many different combinations that vary minimally but are dramatically different!

So have some fun with my capsule wardrobe and think about how you would do it differently.

Happy Monday, ladies!  I hope you and a wonderful and restful weekend.  I was lucky to have my middle kiddo come up to Athens for the weekend.  We had a wonderful time and even went bowling—first time since before the pandemic.  March is completely underway—really hard to believe—and we’re heading into the week in style.  I’ve got a leather moto jacket for women from Scoop available at Walmart.   It checks all the boxes:

Over the past few months, many of you have written in, asking us to feature more budget-friendly outfits.  Since you asked, we’re working hard to deliver.  Moving forward, we’ll be integrating some great outfit ideas from retailers like Walmart, LOFT, and J.Crew Factory amongst others.

Leather moto jacket for women

I’m loving bright colors this spring, and this faux-leather moto jacket Scoop available at Walmart in fiery red delivers.  I layered it on top of a white button-down blouse by Halogen from Nordstrom.  For my bottom, I went pretty matchy-matchy and chose a coral red skirt (also from Scoop).  But what I like most about this jacket, is that it would be wonderful with a pair of straight-leg jeans.

Style tip: Want to hide your tummy? Choose a top with draping or ruching. Or an asymmetrical or wrap blouse is also very effective

Red is “In” for Spring

Coral red is an in-color this spring, and I’m loving it.  For those of us that generally prefer neutrals, jackets are a really easy way to incorporate color into your wardrobe, if only because you can take them off.

Hey, gang!  Today we’re continuing with our Spring Preview series with a focus on Spring colors 2022.  Simply stated, Spring colors this year are bright and arguably bolder than recent years.  “Very Peri”—the new shade of periwinkle—took Pantone’s 2022 color of the year.  But bright yellows, orangey-reds, and blues are on-trend.  Stylecaster has colors like

  • tangy lime;
  • hot orange;
  • cerulean; and
  • radiant yellow

as in-for-Spring.  If you poke around other fashion magazines and websites you’ll see similar palettes.

Spring colors 2022

Today’s post is super simple:  I’ve rounded up 5 bright colors I’m loving this year and dug into the archives to show you different ways to style each color.  Those (general) colors are:

  • purple;
  • yellow;
  • pink;
  • orangey-red; and
  • blue.

Anyone who follows me regularly knows I love neutrals.  But I have and will continue to embrace color any chance I get.  No doubt “bright and bold” can sometimes be difficult to incorporate into our wardrobe.  But remember, there are a lot of ways to introduce color pops into your classic wardrobe.  If you’re not a fan of colorful tops or bottoms, try a handbag or scarf.  If you’re on the fence about “yellow”, try pairing yellow shoes with a pair of black or white pants.

Have fun this Spring looking for new and interesting ways to introduce color into your closet.  And as silly as it sounds, remember: a little color goes a lot further than we might think in a world that often seems dark.

2022 new arrivals

For each featured color, I’ve rounded up 12 new arrivals I’m loving from 3 retailers:

The weather in Georgia has been flirting with spring the past week or so. And I can’t say that I’m mad about it. While fall and winter have lots to offer regarding fashion: cashmere sweaters, coats, boots, scarves, and mittens, there’s something to be said about shedding a layer or two and showing some skin and that brand spanking new pedicure. It’s the perfect dress for wedding season with a pair of sassy shoes.

Perfect dress for wedding season

Bright colors are trending for spring 2022; saffron and green are seen everywhere, and oversized blazers find their power in volume. But black and white are here to stay, so I couldn’t resist a flirty black and white dress with subtle shades of purple throughout. An asymmetric ruffled hem adds a hint of feminity while the chiffon fabric adds movement. What can I say about the smocked waist, except it’s flattering and forgiving?!

As we head into spring special occasions are on the horizon with Easter, Mother’s Day, Graduations, and Weddings. This dress ticks all the boxes and is available at my favorite retailer, Nordstrom. As a matter of fact, my white sandals, black sandals, and black quilted handbag harken from Nordstrom too. It’s one-stop shopping at its best!

Today, I’m showcasing two pairs of sandals with this perfect dress for wedding season. One black and one white from Vince Camuto and Sam Edelman, respectively. Both brands are available at Nordstrom. What I love about both shoes is the of the moment square toe. Footwear is an easy way to incorporate trends into your wardrobe without going over the top. Add a pointy-toe pump or jewel-encrusted sandals, and this dress has special occasion written all over it. Or keep the shoes simple, and you’re ready for the weekend.

A simple white canvas handbag (old, similar here and here) ties back to the white sandals.

walking with a spring in my step | life update

oh, happy day! not only are my gorgeous Nikko blue hydrangeas blooming (my favorite flower after peonies) but i thought i’d share today how i’m dealing with my knee surgery. yesterday, i had my six-week post-surgery check-up, and i’ve been discharged from physical therapy. everything is A-Okay with my new plastic knee. but now the real work begins. it’s time to hit the gym, ramp up my walks, hop on my Peloton, and get the recommended 10,000 steps in. what’s my plan? a ten-day detox for starters (i’ve turned to these many times through the years for a reboot) to cleanse my system from the effects of surgery and anesthesia. both trigger the release of stress hormones that activate inflammatory responses in the immune system. inflammation worsens many diseases, including heart disease, cancer,  dementia, and can even trigger type 2 diabetes. surgery undoubtedly causes pain, stress, and anxiety but couple that with anesthesia and low body temperatures during surgery, and you get an immune system that’s been rattled in a BIG way. but i’m thankful for modern medicine and my new bionic knee.

how to wear a graphic tee

it’s memorial day weekend, and what says summer more than the graphic tee.  they’re just fun, and let’s face it, we continue to need some fun in our lives.  what i love about the graphic tee is that they literally go with anything:  jeans, shorts, or pants.  dress them up, or dress them down—there are endless ways in which you can pull one off.  because  it’s Sunday, i raided the archives and pulled out four of my favorite outfits from the past year styling graphic tees.  in addition, i rounded up my 10 favorite graphic tees for this season.  so sit back and relax:  we’re talking how to wear a graphic tee on the blog today.
