yes, fall is just around the corner. and with it sweaters, booties, blazers, blue jeans and coats. all of my favorite fashion items and i’m certain yours too. can’t wait! but today, i have one foot firmly planted in August. i’m savoring summer with a maxi dress that takes you from a sunny beach to sunset cocktails. is there anything more versatile than a maxi dress come summer? especially if you’re on vacation.
many of you remember i headed to the beach two weeks ago to spend time with my family. what a fun, long weekend filled with lots of time sitting on a cabana chair with my toes in the sand. sometimes, my photographer tags along when i travel, and sometimes not. this time he stayed in Athens so i worked with a photographer from Tybee. Wen McNally specializes in family portraits and weddings. what a joy she was to have behind the camera for this week’s photoshoots! of course, i had to get up at the crack of dawn for this photoshoot. but it was worth it! look at that gorgeous sunrise. breathtaking! if you happen to find yourself in Savannah or Tybee and in need of a photographer, Wen’s your woman. thanks, Wen, for the amazing photos!
is there anything better than a vacation? unless it’s a beach vacation. but i’m prejudiced. there’s nothing i love more than the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore or a long walk with dunes to my left and the ocean to my right. maybe it’s due to five years of island life when i lived on Guam. then again, there are very few people who don’t love to spend time at the beach. am i right?! okay, the mountains are a good choice too. which do you prefer, mountains or beach? let me know in the comments!
when i head on vacation, i love to reach for a maxi dress. they’re just plain fun to wear! this snake print number is from Anthropologie, a go-to retailer when i’m looking for a little extra something! i tossed a belt (similar here) over the top to cinch my waist and add texture. but the tiered dress looks perfectly fine without. don’t you just love choices when it comes to style? an outfit always boils down to your personal preferences. no shoes required at the beach. that’s the best part of vacay! but when i wore this maxi dress to dinner, i slipped into a pair of metallic sandals that looked terrific. since summer is fleeting, i chose a straw handbag that’s the perfect companion to a beach-inspired outfit. don’t forget a pair of sunglasses, especially at 6am…

Gorgeous dress and gorgeous photos! The brown belt is perfect to top it off. I need a beach vacation!!!
Love the maxi dress print. Another fabulous blog.
Your photographer’s pics are spot on. Great sunset shots. Living in NE Fla.,wih beach access,I enjoyed seeing those. But I do like the mts. too. Come through Athens often on our way up to Cashiers, etc. It is always cooler there than here in the summer. Enjoy Kelly’s recipes. How nice to have such a good cook in the family! Best to you all for the fall. Stay well! This must pass soon!
I like beach and mountain vacations, but I love city vacations. It surprised me when I had that revelation but I love all that a city offers…and I live in a city! I grew up in a beach town and I guess I had enough of that.
Hi Beth, Love this post! My favorite beach is Pawley’s Island, SC & Litchfield Beach. I have been to Savannah & stayed at Tybee Island several years ago. My favorite city in the south is Charleston, SC.
Beautiful pics! Love the dress! Living in a very warm state makes me head to the mountains, but I do love the sound of the waves!
Anthropologie’s website is like a beautiful illustrated book of fairy tales. You look SO pretty in this dress. The belt really enhances it. P.S. I purchased the Target camo maxi t-shirt dress that you featured several posts ago in the blue color-block. Love it.
Pretty dress and I’ll bet you could throw on a white denim jacket and take it into Fall. I live on the beautiful MS Gulf Coast. Still, I would love to be in the mountains in the springtime.
I love the mountains. My son and his family live in the Denver, Co area and it is beautiful! But I love the ocean more, I am cancer, water sign, might have something to do with it. Not sure. The summer of 2019 my daughter and son and families and me and my husband went on vacation to Galveston and Corpus Christi
we really enjoyed all the sites, but our favorite time together was at the beach. I bet you had fun with your family at the beach!
Like your dress, except for the print. I do not do anything in snake print. Ugh!
Other animal prints I like, Leopard, zebra, etc
Definitely mountains….love woods, streams, moss, ferns. No wind or burning sun. But in the beautiful Pacific Northwest I have it all!! 🙂
Mountains all the way! Beach is fun for a day for me, maybe a weekend. University towns and smaller cities are fun too. As I get older I’m realizing I’m just kinda over the grime of many big cities. Bigger University towns (populations around 100,000) have lots of culture and independent shopping, with less of the big city problems. So mountains/lakes for relaxation, Uni towns for something more energetic. Though I’ll still always take a trip to London or Paris!
Gorgeous print, it look very nice on you.
I prefer mountains because I lived at the Beach, but I like both.
Thank you very much for your post
Enjoy!!!
That’s was some kind of beautiful sunset-I mean dress! The maxi is really very chic.
The beach wins with me, every time! I love the ocean; swimming in it, looking at it, sitting by or in it! It’s not summer without a trip to the beach.
I love maxi dresses for vacation. I tend to wear more tropical, bright prints when I’m on a beach vacation. I just always want to be reminded of where I am. Yours is pretty and could easily go into the fall with those colors.
couldn’t agree more, nancy!
BTW. Your arms look great!
I’m impressed!
thanks, linda! it gets harder every year but exercise is the key.
I love the beach, especially a beach in the low country. Heading to Folly Beach soon for a full week, can’t wait!
enjoy every minute of time at the beach!
Harikasın Muğla Türkiye’den selamlar:)
thanks for being here!
Beth you look fabulous and the photos are stunning! Well worth the early wake up call…I’m a beach girl. St. Pete Beach on the west coast of Florida is my favorite, My husband and I were married there on the beach at the Don Cesar Hotel (AKA the Pink Palace) Tybee looks so beautiful, will have to get there some day!
well, we know great minds think alike! the beach is truly my happy place.
I love beach vacations. Makes me calm and renewed.
