last week, we looked at the power of separates and how they can be mixed and matched to create endless outfit selections. because we all strive for a hard-working wardrobe. one that works for us, not the other way around, there’s nothing more frustrating than standing in an overflowing closet and thinking, “i’ve nothing to wear.” this week, we’ll take a different spin on a versatile wardrobe. weekend, work, and special occasions are the focus with special emphasis on color schemes. neutrals are the name of the game when it comes to versatility. and they need not be boring. one of my favorite neutrals that span the seasons is green. in particular army or olive green. welcome to neutrals in action weekend style.
this past weekend was so. much. fun. with two girlfriends on deck at casa djalali, there was lots of conversation that weaved in and out, and roundabout as women love to do. back in the day, mr. style would always shake his head in wonder at how my Mom and i would talk for hours about nothing. or so he thought. conversations with girlfriends are of utmost importance. and i’m always struck with how much we have in common, especially at a certain age when we’ve all dealt with triumph and tragedy. but we are resilient creatures. am i right? needless to say, i am so blessed to have girlfriends near and far!
if you have followed the blog for any length of time, then you know i am a big fan of green pants. why? this neutral goes with just about everything. since we’re taking a look at neutrals in action weekend style, a pair of army green pants is the perfect starting point. yes, we’re still in the dog days of summer, but we’re slowly shifting our attention to fall and fall clothes. an easy way to transition from season to season is with neutrals. today’s weekend outfit starts with a pair of cargo pants from Banana Republic. inventory is low so take a look at similar options (here, here, and here). but Banana does restock items. it’s one reason i shop there more and more. that and the fact they’re getting their style grove back with sustainability as a priority. for the top, i chose a sleeveless turtleneck (affordable options here and here) that’s perfect to wear all on its own or pop it under a blazer when the temps cool down. if you love sleeves, take a look at these options (here, here, and here).
another neutral i’m a big fan of is metallic shoes. recently i’ve received lots of emails from mothers of the bride or groom asking for shoe advice. and i always recommend metallic shoes that add instant glam yet act as a neutral. silver and gold shoes and sandals always have room in my closet. honestly, they’re my go-to shoe, along with nude or black. it’s easy to pull in gold accessories with a pair of metallic sandals (similar here and here). so i added a gold-tone handbag (similar here and here) and a black belt with gold hardware (similar here and here). this ootd will easily transition into fall with minor tweaks like a denim jacket or driving mocs.

Hi Beth,
You look great in this outfit. I had a pair of pants like this in high school and college! They are versatile and go with many items. Thanks for the ideas.
Joanie from Iowa
Love this look. I have done this in similar black top in linen crew neck, since I do not care for turtle necks. Love your casual style. So chic.
One of the most flattering outfits you’ve posted this summer! I just love how simple, classic and polished the look is. You look so fab today.
I love how you are always so chic and yet so casual at the same time! Those pants look amazing on you, and I’m glad you aren’t afraid to wear a sleeveless top. I’m a few years older than you, and I have given the old “I can’t wear sleeveless” a kick! I grew these arms, and I’m going to show them!
Beth, Thanks for this post! I just purchased cargo style pants in the same color, with a slightly slimmer leg. They have a small cuff which can be rolled down to ankle length. I’m also a fan of gold & silver in my shoes & purses.
Hi Beth,
You look great in the green and black neutrals. Perfect for late summer and fall. Your hair looks especially flattering today.
Always look forward to your posts.
Julie
Cool, chic, comfy and cute. Love the subdued, greyish shade of green. Such a wonderful neutral.
What a great look! Your simplest outfits are the most chic. I remember the Army surplus jeans I had in the 1970s–they went with everything; especially black! These pants are a stylish take on that classic utility pant. Cheers to good friends and weekends talking all night!
I don’t wear much black anymore but black with army green is still a favorite color combination. You look great in this outfit.
Loverly Beth! I always love a simplistic style and you accessorize beautifully.
Hi Beth
I adore your sandals the color is exactly
what ia been looking for, they are adorable. Do not like the similar one too much.
The pants are adorable also!!
I hope I can find that color some where
Thank you
Great look! I bought those pants and the same style in the darker beige after seeing the light color on you a few weeks ago. They’re my travel pants this summer – loving them! Thanks for the tip!
Those pants look better on you than the model! Love this outfit. You’re an inspiration, please keep the ideas coming! It’s so helpful. Also, would you consider doing a column on vegan handbags? I’m trying not to buy leather handbags. I discovered Rothy’s shoes (plastic but feel like linen; washable) and love them.
I love this chic, classy outfit – you look fabulous.I also love your hair. It’s a very flattering look indeed.
So nice, I love the style!
