fridays with oscar | birthday bash

guess who’s turning five? that’s right; oscar is now five years old, which means in human years he just turned thirty-five. wow! he’s in the prime of his life. but instead of a car to tool around town in, he claims a backyard to himself. plus, an entire bedroom all his own?! technically, it’s our guest room, but oscar is oblivious to the fact he has to share with overnight guests… 

oscar started life as a rescue pup after his mother suddenly died. christmas 2014, he was looking for a human who would give him a home and some love. good thing as mr. style and i were looking for a pup after our beloved english bulldog’s heart gave out. some thought we were crazy to share our two-bedroom apartment with a large breed dog. but we were living in san francisco at the time, and that was our humble abode.

from the beginning, oscar would tag along on photo shoots. mr. style snapped his pic’s to chronicle his growth. can you believe how small he was? look at his ears. he’s never quite grown into them. but i wouldn’t have it any other way.

he would patiently sit and watch the world go by until we finished our photoshoot.

until one day i floated a photo of oscar on Instagram. it was an instant hit! the next week everyone asked where that cute puppy was? and a blog series was born – fridays with oscar.

it’s great fun to look back on our days walking the hills of san francisco with oscar by my side. the first year of his life, he was a city dog through and through. of course, we would regularly walk to the park. but if we zipped off to an early morning coffee oscar joined us. grocery store run? yup. he even rode on the muni now and then. and caught an uber.

oscar grew by leaps and bounds week after week. month after month. mr. style kept snapping photos; readers looked forward to friday. and i loved having oscar by my side.

it’s anyone’s guess what catches his attention. leaves, bugs, dogs. they’re all fair game.

sometimes, he even hams it up for the camera. this is one of my favorite photos.

the first time he visited the beach, he wasn’t a big fan of water. but then he changed his mind.

i have to admit oscar made the transition in 2016 from big city life to small with ease. there’s nothing he likes more than patrolling his yard or strolling around the block, keeping one eye out for those pesky deer.

these days he’s content to stay home and wander around his yard. and he always joins in for photos when it’s time to whip up a cocktail and recipe. oscar can always be counted on to join the holiday spirit.

and he’s more or less okay to share his home with a cat named ollie.
