Wear It Now & Later:  Building a Sustainable Wardrobe

Happy Monday, ladies!  I hope you had a beautiful weekend.  If your climate is anything like Georgia’s, September can see temperatures as high as the mid-90s and as low as the 60s, depending on the time of day.  That means I’m often still reaching for parts of my Summer wardrobe during the Fall months.  So today, I want to focus on building a sustainable wardrobe by identifying key Summer (or early Fall) pieces and easily transitioning them as temps continue to drop.

Summer staples like

  • dresses & skirts;
  • layering tops (tanks, tees, etc.); and
  • pants

can easily be transitioned into Fall with appropriate layering and pairing strategies.  This is easiest when those Summer staples happen to be neutral-based.  But this can be done even with bolder more “Summer-y” items, as I’ll show you today.

The Summary

  Today, I’m building a sustainable wardrobe by taking the same Summer skirt and transitioning to Fall, accounting for seasonal temperature variation.

Wear It Now & Later:  Building a Sustainable Wardrobe

1. Wear It Now

(FARM Rio)

When faced with warmer Fall weather, reach for one of your Summer skirts like this FARM Rio skirts (sold out, similar) and pair it with a darker, neutral-based short-sleeved sweater.

A bright bold skirt like this that worked great in Summer (imagine pairing it with a white top) transitions fantastically into Fall while still being temperature appropriate.

3. Wear it Later

(FARM Rio)

As temperatures drop, swap the short-sleeved sweater for a long-sleeved wool one and a moto jacket.  Notice that the color scheme is exactly the same in both outfits; they each hit that perfect Fall note.

So, we’ve got the same skirt you wore in Summer, styled two ways for Fall, taking into account temperature changes as the season changes.

    Very nice, Beth! The colors in the Farm Rio skirt lend themselves to transition well … something to keep in mind. Also, I can picture it with a white top, as you mention, for summer.

    We are getting ready to downsize, and becoming more minimal and that includes our wardrobes. I have discovered a clothing item that I love that is definitely sustainable. I have recently purchased several mock turtleneck tops with elbow length sleeves. Although I am very fit for my age, I know my upper arms aren’t quite what they used to be!! I will be wearing these tops either alone, or under a great cardigan, or even my moto jacket! I have always been very selective when buying clothing, but these new tops really hit the spot.
