As a makeup artist for 20+ years, I’m always surprised by how many women stop using — or knowingly skip — the makeup, skincare, and hair products that make the biggest difference in how polished they look. So I rounded up the beauty products for women over 50 that quietly do the heavy lifting, even though they rarely get the credit.

Most women invest in the obvious — tinted moisturizers, lipstick, hair spray — but skip the behind-the-scenes products that actually determine how your makeup and hair look and wear all day long.
If you’re a mature gal, these are the unsung heroes that deserve a spot in your routine immediately. Tiny tweaks in our beauty routines can create really big, beautiful results.
Let’s get right into my top 7.

Key Takeaways
- The most flattering beauty products for women over 50 are often the “prep and finish” steps: eyelid primer, lash curler, setting spray, under-eye brightener, volumizing root products, lip liner, and a cleansing balm.
- Eyelid primer keeps shadow from creasing into fine lines; an eyelash curler lifts lashes that naturally straighten with age.
- A setting spray melts away powderiness, while a peach- or pink-toned under-eye brightener wakes up tired eyes.
- Volumizing root products add lift to finer hair, and a lip liner restores definition to softening lip borders.

1. Eyelid Primer: The Smoothest Canvas Trick for Mature Eyes

Eyelid Primer : MAC Longwear Paint Pots, $28 (wearing shade “painterly”), or Ulta Beauty Matte Veil Eyelid primer, $13
So many women skip this step — but shouldn’t. If your eyeshadow disappears, creases, or settles into fine lines by lunchtime, an eyelid primer is the solution. It creates a smooth canvas, makes color appear more vibrant, color-corrects veins in the lids, and keeps eye makeup fresh all day.
For fair-to-medium skin, my favorite Paint Pot shades are “Painterly” and “Soft Ochre.” For darker lids, try “Groundwork.” Apply with a finger or a concealer brush — just use it.
2. A Great Eyelash Curler: Instant Lift Before Mascara
A Great Eyelash Curler : Shiseido lash curler, $28, or , Jenny Patinkin Big Reveal Eyelash Curler for hooded/deep set eyes, $20
I feel like most women my age have stopped using an eyelash curler once they hit 30, but I’m not sure why! A couple of quick and gentle squeezes can instantly make eyes look larger, brighter, and more awake.
As lashes naturally become straighter and thinner with age, a quality eyelash curler can create a surprisingly youthful lift before mascara even touches your lashes. And then once the mascara does touch them, they look even more remarkable!
If you’ve struggled with short stumpy lashes, try the latest tubing mascara from COVERGIRL, the eye enhancer wrap mascara, $10, that gives shocking length!
3. Multitasking Setting Spray: The Finish That Melts Powderiness
Multi Tasking Setting Sprays : MAC Fix + Setting Spray, $34, or Morphe Continuous Setting Mist, $18
Many women think setting spray is only for younger gals or special occasions — not true. A good one melts makeup into the skin, reduces that powdery look, and extends wear. Both MAC Fix+ and Morphe Continuous Setting Mist also refresh the complexion and add a healthy glow without feeling heavy or cakey.
The key is to spray enough. A couple of squirts won’t do it — mist in a criss-cross motion, then a T motion to cover the whole face.

4. Color-Correcting Under-Eye Brightener: Wake Up Tired Eyes
- Natasha Denona Hyglam color correcting concealer, $32 (wearing shade P2)
- Rare Beauty Positive Light Under Eye Brightener, $24

Color-Correcting Under-Eye Brightener : Natasha Denona Hyglam color correcting concealer, $32 (wearing shade P2) or Rare Beauty Positive Light Under Eye Brightener, $24
This one is hard for me to believe, because I’d never feel finished without it. Many women go straight to tinted moisturizer or foundation and never reach for concealer at all. But a peach- or pink-toned brightener under the eyes works miracles — it brings the eye bed to life so it doesn’t look sunken, sad, or tired.

It neutralizes discoloration so you can use less concealer overall, and both options above have a modern, ultra-fluid consistency that delivers high pigment in a natural finish.
5. Volumizing Hair Products: Lift for Finer Hair After 50
Volumizing Hair Products : Dove volume + fullness dry shampoo, $7, or Sexy Hair Big Root Pump Mousse, $23
It’s common for our hair to become finer and lose natural fullness after 50 — but that doesn’t mean we accept hair that hugs the scalp. A root-lifting mousse or volumizing dry shampoo creates the appearance of thicker, fuller hair by adding lift at the roots, more body and movement, and a more youthful finish.

I actually use both after shampooing for max volume. I use the mousse on towel dried hair before I blow dry, then I hit the roots again afterward with the volumizing dry shampoo for double the height! Works every time.
6. Lip Liner: Redefine Softening Lip Borders
- Morphe Signature lip pencil, $7 (wearing shade “junior suite”)
- Rhode Contouring Lip Shaper, $24

Lip Liner : Morphe Signature lip pencil, $7 (wearing shade “junior suite”) or Rhode Contouring Lip Shaper, $24
Lip liner isn’t just for the ’80s and ’90s. Our lip borders soften and lose definition as we age, leaving lips thinner than in our youth. A flattering deep-nude liner keeps lipstick from feathering while creating the look of fuller, more polished, more defined lips.
Tip : to fake a larger upper and lower lip, you can overline just above the cupid’s bow and just below the middle of the lower lip. Then keep that liner directly on your natural lip perimeter everywhere else. Drag a high shine gloss right over the edges of that liner to get max fullness illusion! My lip gloss wearing here is Patrick Ta Major Volume Plumping lip gloss, $26 in shade 2 CC’s (sheer pink).

I’ve been dying to try the Rhode Lip Shaper that’s been out of stock at Sephora forever — looks like all colors are back in stock on their official site now.

7. Makeup-Melting Cleansing Balm: The Right Way to Take It All Off
Makeup Melting Balm : Elemis Pro Collagen original cleansing balm, $42, or elf Holy Hydration Melting Balm, $12.
Now you need to remove all of it. If you’re still scrubbing with makeup wipes at the end of the night, it’s time for an upgrade. A cleansing balm gently but effectively melts away makeup, sunscreen, and impurities without stripping the skin.
Your complexion is left softer, calmer, and better prepped for skincare. The Elemis is everyone’s holy-grail balm, but if you want to test the waters, the e.l.f. version is a wonderful place to start.

The Rest of My Look
: I’m really into the girly, romantic, silk blouse look! Mine is already sold out, but here are a few similar from Rumored, $168,and ASOS here $65, and Anthropologie here, $98. // My shadow look is from my new Natasha Denona “I Need a Nude” palette, $72. // Large gold bangle bracelets from Urban Outfitters, $20, go with everything! // My fun cornflower blue polish is Sally Hansen “sugar fix” miracle gel nail polish, $12.

The Bottom Line
Sometimes the products that make the biggest impact aren’t the glamorous ones. These beauty staples work behind the scenes to help your makeup apply better, wear longer, and look more flattering on mature skin.
If you missed last week’s post here, it was a popular one! I created a full glam makeup look that appeared to cost a fortune to create, but it was actually done with 11 drugstore products for all UNDER $90!
Frequently Asked Questions
What beauty products should women over 50 use?
The most useful beauty products for women over 50 are the prep-and-finish steps most people skip: an eyelid primer, an eyelash curler, a setting spray, a color-correcting under-eye brightener, a volumizing root product, a lip liner, and a cleansing balm. Together they help makeup apply better, wear longer, and look more flattering on mature skin.
Should women over 50 use eyelid primer?
Yes. As skin matures, eyeshadow tends to crease and settle into fine lines within a few hours. An eyelid primer creates a smooth base, boosts color payoff, and helps shadow stay put all day.
Is it safe to use an eyelash curler after 50?
Absolutely. Lashes naturally straighten and thin with age, so a gentle curl adds an instantly youthful lift. Use a couple of soft squeezes before mascara — there’s no age limit on curled lashes.
What is the best setting spray for mature skin?
Look for a hydrating, multitasking mist like MAC Fix+ or Morphe Continuous Setting Mist. Both melt away powderiness, add a healthy glow, and extend wear without sitting heavy or cakey on mature skin.
How do you make thinning hair look fuller after 50?
Build volume at the roots. A root-lifting mousse on damp hair before blow-drying, followed by a volumizing dry shampoo at the roots afterward, adds lift and the appearance of thicker, fuller hair.
