Fall fashion is here! There are so many new trends coming into this fall season and some I most definitely will not be wearing! Sometimes, it’s good to talk about what we’re not wearing, just as much as it is what we are. So today, I’m walking through 5 Fall fashion trends I’m not wearing in 2022.
I’m generally a classic dresser. But classic dressers sometimes get stuck and look stodgy and stale. I’m a big, big believer in staying modern, fresh, and relevant. So, I like to follow an 80/20 rule: 80 percent of classic staples and 20 percent are trends I think will easily go into my wardrobe.
But remember, we don’t need to participate in every trend that comes out. If a trend doesn’t flatter your body or make you feel your best, there is always another piece of clothing that will make you feel absolutely fabulous.
Fashion is always a bit of a tightrope, so let’s see how I’m navigating the Fall 2022 trends.
The Summary
Today I’m walking through the 5 Fall fashion trends I’m not wearing this year
For each trend, I will show you how to modify it and incorporate it into your classic wardrobe
For each modified trend, I’m sharing a shoppable outfit
5 Fall Fashion Trends I’m Not Wearing
1. Oversized Blazer
The trend. The oversized blazer, specifically where sleeves reach past hands. Looks like you borrowed the blazer from a 6’6 man in your life.
Why I’m not wearing it. Not sure what the fashion houses are telling us this year, but the oversized look in general is extremely blown out and mostly unwearable in my opinion.
How I’m Modifying It. I’m happy to wear a slightly oversized blazer that I can layer with a chunky sweater. Pair them with a pair straight-leg jeans, loafers or boots.

2. Low Rise Baggy Jeans
The trend. Low-rise baggy jeans. Low-rise jeans were big in the 90s. They’re back, but baggy now.
Why I’m not wearing it. Just like the micro miniskirt, there are very few women of any age that can pull this trend off. Not classic, not classy. I’ll be passing on it.
How I am wearing it. I actually do like the high-rise baggy jeans this year. I roll them up and wear them with a pointy toe boot. Paired with a jacket, sweater, or button-down, these jeans do have a time and place.

3. Micro Miniskirt
The trend. The micro miniskirt.
Why I’m not wearing it. Are you surprised that a 64-year-old is not wearing a micro skirt? And to be honest, can anyone pull this off on practical grounds? What lingerie would you even wear?
How I am modifying it. I love skirts when Fall rolls into town. I wear them with tights, riding boots, jackets, blazers, and the like. I recommend an A-line or pencil skirt that sits right above or below the knees.

4. Oversized Knitwear
The trend. Oversized knitwear, specifically sweaters where sleeves reach past hands and shoulder seams are below the shoulder line.
Why I’m not wearing it. Too voluminous and baggy. Absolutely not practical.
How I am modifying it. I love chunky sweaters, turtleneck sweaters, and cardigans. They’re always part of my wardrobe, and I love paring—especially chunky sweaters—with a slim pair of denim.
Ultra High Slim Jean (Banana Republic) | Dery 9×9 Bootie (Nine West) | Chunky Scarf Turtleneck Sweater (similar, Thakoon)

5. Oversized Cargo Pants
The trend. Oversized Cargo Pants (or “parachute” pants).
Why I’m not wearing it. Since cargo pants have pockets, the oversized look comes off as “clownish”.
How I am modifying it. I love cargo pants—always have, always will. But I want a more streamlined, “safari-chic” look. Paired with a crisp white shirt and elegant shoes, you can’t go wrong.

I am glad to hear you say it! Not all styles are to be embraced by us 60+ women. These trends are meant for young women and thatโs who you see wearing them in the pictures. Itโs taken me a lifetime to know what looks good on me and what does not. Lesson learned many dollars ago.
Oh my! Who in the world would consider any of these trends attractive? I’ll be passing on these also. smh.
As usual you hit the mail on the head. Extreme trendy clothes belong on the fashion pages not on your body. And I love your hair!!!!
Thank you for not being afraid to honestly critic some of this silliness – โthe Emperor has no clothes.โ
Teenagers can wear all manner of things and look โmod,โ but this trend towards micro mini, crop tops and the never ending โnakedโ dresses at Hollywood events is worrying. Iโm nothing near prude, but women seem to have lost their sense of self respect, or at least seem willing to trade it for attention.
I love your modified takes on these trends. I have never worn cargo pants, but you, as always, have convinced me to get a pair. Lake outings with the grands when a purse is the last thing you want – functional pockets would definitely save the day !
It seems to me that several of these trends are highlighting bare and very tiny waists. The bulky clothes make the modelโs waist appear smaller. The trends always seem to drift toward what โolderโ women donโt or canโt have. Like a tiny waist. The younger generation is just discovering a body part they didnโt know they hadโฆa waist. After years of low rise skinny jeans. I agree with you that none of these are for those of us who know what looks good on us. Thanks for all your wonderful work!
Thank you for reminding us that we don’t have to wear all the trends, just because some designer came up with it. All these I will not be wearing either. They all look like something you are waiting to grow into or in the case of the micro mini skirt something they grew out of. Thanks for the alternatives. I wear cargo pants and wear them like you do. I never did like low rise jeans, shows most gals underwear, etc. Loved when the high waist jeans came in. Fit me great!

I look to trends for a direction that fashion is going towards, not necessarily what I should wear now. Then I look for elements that interest me, maybe like a strong shoulder line, for instance, that I may like to try on my body shape.
Thanks for showing alternatives, as retail usually tones down
runway anyway. Thanks.
Thank you for being brave enough to state the truth. Loving your classy options. Thank you.
I am really tired of oversized anything. This is a trend I would like to see gone never to return. The look is really not flattering to anyone.
Agree wholeheartedly!! On all counts
Big applause. Great post. Fun to see how you modified the trend, now how about Barbie Core? LOL
Great tips, Beth. Love your hairstyle in these. Someone pointed out the the bare midriff can be worn by the young but that look is only flattering on those who have practically no middle to speak of ! And those are few and far between.
Great replacements for high fashion trends for every day wear! You do a great job!! Thank you!!
I totally agree with you on all these trends. Iโm 61 and prefer to keep clothes mostly classic. Thank you, Beth for giving us the styling tips to help keep us modern.
Fabuolous display of what not to wear. Thank you.
