A few weeks ago, Kelly and I drove out to Lake Oconee for one of my favorite shoots of the year. We had a handful of dresses between us — but this one stopped us both the moment we unpacked it.

A blue and green paisley fit and flare in a crisp cotton poplin. A print that feels like spring and summer at the same time — the kind of color story that works at a Mother’s Day brunch, a garden party, a casual anniversary dinner. And a silhouette that has quietly become my answer to almost every occasion question: fit and flare, midi length, defined waist. It works.

Here’s what made this shoot feel special: Kelly and I are wearing the same dress. She’s in the petite cut. I’m in the regular. Two different fits, two different ways of styling it, two completely different looks — and both of us happy in it.

That’s the dress worth talking about.

What is a good Mother’s Day dress for women over 50?

A fit and flare silhouette is one of the most universally flattering dress styles for women over 50 — it defines the waist, skims the hips, and moves beautifully. A spring print in a midi length hits the sweet spot between dressy and approachable. Look for a fabric with some body, like poplin, that holds its shape through a long afternoon.

How does a fit and flare dress look on petite women?

On petite frames, a fit and flare dress in a midi length can read as full-length — which is elegant. The key is proportion: a kitten heel or low wedge elongates the leg, and keeping accessories streamlined lets the dress do the work. A printed dress cuts the eye horizontally at the hem rather than mid-calf, which helps avoid a truncating effect.

What shoes work best with a fit and flare midi dress over 50?

Kitten mule sandals or low wedge espadrilles are ideal with a fit and flare midi — both add a small lift without overwhelming the silhouette. For a more relaxed look, a flat sandal or loafer works beautifully. Avoid very high heels, which can throw off the proportions of a full midi skirt.

What accessories should you wear with a printed spring dress?

Let the print lead and keep accessories warm and natural — a woven or raffia bag, wood or resin earrings, and a neutral sandal all complement a paisley or floral print without competing. Avoid heavy gold hardware or statement pieces that fight with a busy print.

How We Styled the Modern Poplin Fit & Flare Dress From Talbots

Two women laughing together on a wooden bridge, both wearing the same blue and green paisley fit and flare midi dress — the woman on the left (over 50, silver hair) in regular sizing with gold drop earrings and a woven shoulder bag, and the woman on the right in petite sizing with a cream woven clutch and mint wedge espadrilles — a candid Mother's Day dress comparison in petite and regular.

Beth’s Look

The regular cut hits me at just the right midi length — full enough in the skirt to move beautifully, fitted enough through the bodice to feel polished rather than boxy. I styled it simply: the Camille kitten mule sandal in a warm gold, the Berkeley handknotted shoulder bag for a touch of texture, and wood drop earrings to pull the green from the print.

The whole look reads as spring-ready without trying too hard. Which is exactly where I want to be on Mother’s Day. If your Mother’s Day plans include a more formal event, check out my post: Special Occasion Dresses for Women Over 50

A quick note on the brand: this dress is from Talbots — and if you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know how much we trust them for both petite and regular sizing. With Talbots’ Dresses, the fit is consistent, the quality holds up, and they genuinely understand how to cut a dress that flatters a real woman’s body. This paisley poplin is a perfect example of why they stay at the top of my list season after season.

Beth’s Style Tip: When wearing a bold print, reach for accessories in one color from the pattern rather than trying to match the whole palette. The wood earrings pick up the green; everything else stays neutral. One connection is all you need.

Kelly’s Look

Kelly is in the petite cut — and I want to be transparent about one detail: she sized up to a 2P from her usual 0P because that’s what was available when we shot. And here’s the thing — it still works beautifully. The waist has a little more ease, the skirt falls at a lovely length, and the overall silhouette reads as intentional rather than oversized. If you prefer your dress with a bit of give, or you’re between sizes, this is good news: sizing up one size is a completely wearable option.

She styled it with Low Wedge Ankle Strap Espadrilles — which pick up the aqua in the print so perfectly it looks planned — and the Portofino Woven Clutch for a casual, summer-ready finish. The mint shoe is the surprise of this whole look, and it earns every compliment. Kelly’s mint color espadrilles are many years old, but similar versions that go beautifully include: Low Wedge Ankle Strap Espadrilles | Lace Up Wedge Espadrilles

Recently, Kelly featured a beautiful tiered dress for petites. If you’re petite and looking for how to style a tiered midi dress, this post is for you! Check out that post: Can Petites Wear Tiered Dresses? Yes, Here’s How to Pull it Off.

Beth’s Style Tip: On a petite frame, a wedge or platform espadrille does double duty — it adds height without the instability of a stiletto, and the ankle strap keeps the proportions clean. And when a color in your shoe picks up a color in your print, the whole look snaps into focus without any extra effort.

Shopping for dresses after 50 can feel frustrating. Everything seems either too young, too frumpy, or completely shapeless. But the right dress can instantly make you feel polished, confident, and ready for anything. In this video, I’m sharing 10 chic spring dresses across five essential categories that work beautifully for women over 50. These dresses are elegant, flattering, and incredibly easy to style.

Closing Thoughts – Mother’s Day Dress for Women Over 50

Here’s what I love most about this dress: it doesn’t need a specific occasion to earn its place. Brunch with your kids? Yes. A quiet lunch with a friend who feels like family? Absolutely. A solo afternoon walk somewhere beautiful, because this is your day and you feel like getting dressed? That too.

Mother’s Day looks different for everyone — and whatever yours looks like this year, this dress is ready for it. Throw on your favorite sandals, grab a bag you love, and walk out the door feeling exactly the way you deserve to feel. That’s really all it needs to do. 🌿
