Happy Thursday, Ladies! I have highlighted menswear-inspired looks here before, most recently with my pinstriped suit. Today I want to share how I am styling Herringbone Trousers. My quest for this particular trouser was challenging because I was looking for something with a straight leg and most of the styles I came across were wide-leg trousers. Well, I found my perfect pair of herringbone trousers from Wit & Wisdom.

Herringbone Trousers – The Perfect Pant for Fall
Herringbone Trousers

I am wearing the ‘Ab’Solution Skyrise Herringbone Ankle Slim Trousers from Wit & Wisdom at Nordstrom. This style is a slim, straight-leg pant with a cropped fit. They don’t come in petite sizes, so I am wearing a regular size 0. The length hit just below my ankle, so I had them taken up a little bit so the length would hit right at my ankle. These trousers are not lined, but they are not at all itchy or scratchy.

Herringbone Fun Facts
Did you know that the herringbone pattern has its roots in ancient history? The earliest herringbone fabrics are from ancient Italy and the elite of ancient Egypt wore the pattern in their jewelry designs.
The Romans used bricks arranged in herringbone patterns in their road paving system in the Roman Empire because the interlocking pattern provided stability and durability.
One of the first examples of the herringbone pattern in flooring can be found at the Chateau de Fontainebleau, installed in 1539.
From 1942 until the 1960s, the US Marine Corps wore herringbone uniforms.
Herringbone is quite a historical pattern!

How to Style Herringbone Trousers
Herringbone is a very wearable fabric. It can add a very subtle pattern to your outfit, so subtle that the pattern can look like a solid color from a distance. You can find herringbone in a fine pattern weave, and you can also find it in a more noticeable pattern weave, typically when there is another color in the weave.

The Herringbone Trousers I am wearing offer a more noticeable pattern because of the multicolor weave. The color of this style is called “Peanut Butter Black”. Wit & Wisdom also makes this style of trouser in a classic “Heather Charcoal” Herringbone, in which the herringbone stripes are wider and more noticeable.

I like the warm tones in the “Peanut Butter Black” version of these trousers, so I paired them with this deep auburn Cable Sweater from Ann Taylor. I am wearing a petite xxs, I recommend sizing down one size since this sweater seems to run a little large. If you’re loving everything in the red spectrum this season, try the Petite Traveling Stitch Turtleneck Sweater in a dark mauve rose color or the Petite Boucle Crew Neck Sweater.

Burgundy Accessories

In keeping with the warm tones, I chose burgundy-colored accessories. The croc-embossed Madewell x G.H. Bass Mary Jane Weejuns Loafers are from last year, but this year’s version is just as on-trend.

And, finally! The Mini Shopper Tote is back in stock at Madewell. I love this bag and gravitate toward using it every day – I even have it in two colors! If you like a larger bag, try the Essential Bucket Tote in a beautiful deep merlot suede.
