frequently readers write and ask, “what items are essential for fall, spring, winter or summer.” since we’re smack dab in the middle of my favorite season for fashion – fall – i’ve rounded up five covetable items every closet needs. sometimes the list stretches to ten, but today we’re focusing on five closet essentials that will take you all the way through fall in style.
leather jacket
leather or suede jackets are the first items i reach for once the temperature drops. they’re classic, modern and edgy all at the same time. and they add instant chic to any outfit. don’t forget leather or suede jackets are an investment that will last a lifetime.
the sweater
what is it about sweaters that make my heart go pitter patter? well, for one they’re cozy, and they come in a variety of styles. sweaters can be oversized or slim-fitting, turtleneck or crew. what can i say except they’re the perfect layering piece?
the boot
every season i try to add one pair of boots to my collection. sock boots and over-the-knee boots are still trending. riding boots and booties are classics that are here to stay. but one of my all time favorites is the chelsea boot. frye boots are always a good choice. i have a brand spanking new pair i can’t wait to wear.
the coat
having grown up in the Midwest and spending a considerable amount of time in Minnesota i know a thing or two about overcoats ‘cuz baby it gets cold outside! even if you live in California or Florida, it’s a good idea to keep at least one coat on hand. you never know when you might make a trek to colder regions. start with a trench coat with a zip in lining then add on to your heart’s content depending on the region you live.
the blazer
a blazer works any time of year as it adds spit and polish to even the most casual outfit. military blazers, tweed blazers, schoolboy blazers, even velvet blazers are great additions to your closet.

Great examples of some classics. Today is a high of 58 outside and I can’t get rid of this big smile on my face. So ready for sweaters, scarves, boots, jackets, etc.
we waited a long time for fall to arrive. and now it’s here! before too long i know i’ll be complaining that it’s cold and dreary, but for now i’m all smiles. xo
Love each example. I am so happy to be wearing boots, leather jackets and blazers though I must admit that I don’t wear many sweaters.
hands down fall is my favorite time of year. there’s something special about slipping into the first pair of boots of the season! xo
That orange scarf and brown suede jacket definitely put me in a fall mood. We’ve just returned from balmy Italy to freezing temps here in eastern Canada, and I am packing away my summer things double quick and can’t wait to dig into my fall sweaters and scarves. Thanks for the inspiration, Beth.
lucky you to have just returned from my favorite country in the world! i hope you splurged on a gelato or two. and of course a lovely glass of red wine. it seems as if we waited soooo long for fall to appear. and now it’s here gorgeous temps and all. xo
