Chic Summer Looks for Stylish Grandmothers Over 50

One Denim Dress, Five Ways — A Classics Reimagined Feature

Looking for chic summer looks for stylish grandmothers that feel fresh, effortless, and age-defying?

Let’s get something straight: just because you’re a grandmother doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a wardrobe of orthopedic shoes and capri pants from 1997. Being a Bebe (glamorous and on-the-go) just means you’ve lived long enough to know that comfort and style are not mutually exclusive.

This month’s Classics Reimagined is dedicated to the denim shirt dress—a timeless staple that works harder than most politicians. One piece. Five fresh outfits. All proof that summer style over 50 can be effortlessly chic, ageless, and completely non-matronly.

🌊 Look 1: The Coastal Cool Look

Unbutton the shirtdress just a bit, cinch it with a raffia belt, and clutch/tote and let your accessories do the talking. I love gold hoop earrings and a bamboo bangle. This look belongs on a boardwalk, a boat, or your back patio with a glass of sauv blanc.

Style tip: A white tee layered underneath adds dimension without bulk.

💼 Look 2: The Power Casual Look– A Chic Summer Outfit for Stylish Grandmothers

Who says polished can’t be breathable? Add a structured blazer (navy or white), crisp sneakers, and a crossbody bag that means business—even if you’re just heading to the farmers’ market. If you’re loving these summer outfit ideas, don’t miss these five outfit formulas that instantly make you look taller, slimmer, and yes—even 10 years younger. I use them year-round.

Style tip: Pull your hair into a bun, throw on oversized sunnies, and channel your inner “CEO of summer.”

🎯 Look 3: The Weekend Vibe

This one’s all about low effort, high impact. Roll the sleeves, pop the collar, swipe on a bold lip, and sling on a suede crossbody. You’ll look like you woke up chic—and honestly, you kind of did.

Style tip: Stacked bangles and oversized sunglasses elevate the whole look.

👙 Look 4: The Bebe at the Beach Look

Wear your denim dress open as a duster over a classic striped one-piece. Add a straw hat, minimal sandals, and a giant tote that holds snacks, sunscreen, and a good paperback. Beach chic meets Instagram-ready.

Style tip: This one travels well—no steaming, no fuss, just roll and go.

🌹 Look 5: The Date Night Look

Ready to dial it up? Cinch your waist with a wide belt, slip into heeled espadrilles, and add statement earrings. Top it off with a soft wrap and glowing skin (thank you, serum and bronzer). Want to elevate these looks even further? These summer sandals are my go-to picks for style and support—because cute and comfortable can coexist.

Style tip: Soft waves or a sleek low bun pair beautifully with this flirty, feminine vibe.

What You Need:

  • A little shimmer (on the cheeks or in the eye)

✨ Closing Thoughts

You don’t need an entirely new wardrobe to look amazing this summer—you just need one great dress and the confidence to style it your way. Whether you’re headed to the beach, a board meeting, or a backyard dinner party, your denim dress is ready to play. These chic summer looks for stylish grandmothers prove that one classic piece can go a long way when styled with intention and personality.

Because being stylish at a certain age isn’t about rules—it’s about knowing which classics still deserve a reimagining. And if you’re trying to avoid the dreaded “matronly” zone, check out this post on summer style mistakes that age you—and what to wear instead.

The ‘glam and on-the-go’ alliteration in your opening statement got me thinking about what ‘Bebe’ could stand for. Bold, exciting, brave, energetic? All of that – and I’m sure plenty of others – totally fits the Bebe you are and will be.

My mam was ‘Nana’ to my daughter (and her mam was nana to me, and I’d want to be nana to any future grandkids if that’s in my future), which could be ‘Nurturing, accomplished, natural, active’

    1. Beth Djalali

I absolutely love that—what a beautiful way to frame both Bebe and Nana! Bold, exciting, brave, energetic? Yes, please—I’ll wear that with pride. And your take on Nana is just as special. Isn’t it amazing how these names carry so much legacy, strength, and heart? Thank you for sharing this—it gave me a smile (and maybe a few new ideas for what Bebe really stands for). 💕

Beth, This is the best post ever! I absolutely love all the ways you’ve shown to style a denim dress. I’ve been looking for a denim shirt dress. It’s in my cart!
Thanks for all your inspiration, and enjoy your “Bebe time”.

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much—that means the world to me! I’m thrilled the post inspired you, and I hope that denim shirt dress makes you feel as fabulous as you are. Enjoy styling it your way—and I’ll definitely be soaking up every second of this sweet new Bebe season. 💕

Love your blog! I’m a petite granny so Kelly’s posts are fun for me. I also love when the two of you show the same outfit on each of you and we can see how to make the outfit work for our specific shapes/ sizes. Never stop! You’re awesome!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much! I love hearing that—and I know Kelly will too. Showing how the same outfit works on different body types has been one of our favorite things to share. So glad it resonates with you, fellow petite granny! We’re not stopping anytime soon. 💪💗

Please stop “downing” orthopedic shoes. Some of us have actual foot problems that require specific support or accommodation features. We know they’re not stylish. We wish we could wear stylish shoes. I’m assuming a good proportion of over 50 ladies wear shoes that you’d say aren’t stylish, but they are for comfort and the ability to walk!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you for your comment—and I hear you. The line was meant with a wink, poking fun at the stereotype, not the very real need many of us have for supportive footwear. Trust me, I know the value of a good shoe that lets you walk pain-free (and I’ve got my fair share!). Style doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfort—but we can challenge the idea that aging automatically means giving up on personal style. That’s the heart of this blog. ❤️

Loved all the ways the dress was used

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed the styling ideas—one good dress really can go the distance. 💙

I’m the Granny, Ganje, Manny and Gaga to seven grandchildren ranging fro 21 down to 4 years old. They are the loves of my life but unfortunately all live overseas these days. When they were little my tote bag always contained a packet of wet wipes a couple of ziplock bags and a change of clothes for whichever child was with me. I also tended to wear dark or patterned clothes which could hide a multitude of sins! Nothing beats baby snuggles but even hugs from my 6ft 5in grandson are precious.
Enjoy to the max as they grow so fast!

    1. Beth Djalali

What a beautiful legacy of love, Ganje-Gaga-Manny-Granny! Seven grandkids across the globe—what a full heart you must have. I smiled at your “tote bag essentials”—every stylish Bebe knows wet wipes and a change of clothes are the real accessories. And you’re so right: whether they’re in diapers or towering over us, those hugs are pure gold. Thank you for sharing this—it warmed my heart. 💕

  7. Beverly Logan

Look the looks! Btw, I’m a “Bebe” to five precious grands!❤️

  8. Maureen McDonald

Love all the fashionable ideas for grandma’s

  9. Susy

I really like this dress and most likely will get it. My problem is I like everything you show! BTW, I watched the video where you style this dress – you look great. I’m truly a fan and a believer that style after 50 ( or 60 in my case) is doable for all of us.

I Love Style St A Certain Age.

    Do you carry petite

    1. Beth Djalali

Great question! I don’t personally sell clothing on the blog, but I do link to brands I love—and many of them do carry petite sizes. You’ll often see both regular and petite options shared in my posts and Reels. Always happy to help you find the right fit!
