if you live in georgia, you’re bound to come across a billboard that hosts one of the most iconic companies worldwide. according to the history books, coca cola began in 1886 in the laboratory of local atlanta pharmacist dr. john s. pemberton. dr. pemberton’s friend and bookkeeper, frank m. robinson is credited with naming the beverage that combined a flavored syrup along with carbonated soda initially dished up at the local fountain store for 5 cents.
here are a few fun facts:
nine drinks were sold per day in 1886
in 1887 pemberton registers ‘coca cola syrup and extract’ with the patent office
the advertising budget passed $100,000 in 1901
annual sales surpass $1,000,000 in 1904
1923 introduced the first six bottle carton; the carton is patented the following year
Christmas advertising began in the 1920’s in an effort to increase sales during the slower winter months
fast forward to the seventies when i was but a budding teenager who fell in love with the popular ad campaign “i’d like to buy the world a coke.” and who could forget the super bowl ad with a young boy offering his coke to battered pittsburgh steelers defensive lineman ‘mean’ joe green. the young boy received joe’s jersey in exchange for his kindness. yes, iconic advertising along with a fantastic, refreshing taste, coca cola recently celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2011 and is still going strong. you might say, it’s the real thing and it’s here to stay.
so who could resist a photo-op in front of a local coca cola billboard? especially when a relaxed and comfy denim dress is involved. canvas sandals and a straw handbag are helping to chase those monday blues away ‘cuz they’re so dang cute! and on trend. monday, i’m ready for you. diet coke in hand.
