all right, ladies, we are marching our way through july. and while the weather is hot and humid on the outside inside is a different matter. so i tend to walk a fine line when it comes to my summer outfits. and i do love to throw on a third layer to add spit and polish. one that’s not too hot or bulky. so let’s talk about how to wear a black vest today. a black vest is a hard-working wardrobe staple. it’s versatile enough to be dressed up or down. and it transitions beautifully from one season to the next. if you haven’t read my series that discusses wardrobe basics start with back to basics. the series was designed to help make getting ready in the morning a breeze. and it all starts with having closet staples on hand that will carry you from season to season. like a black vest.
while date night has changed drastically for me in recent months. i do know how important it is to take care of myself and my mental well being. so planning activities outside of the house is a must. and there’s nothing better than getting together with friends. the second tuesday of each month i typically run off to my local book club to join a lovely group of women to discuss our monthly selection. this month we read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. the book will come alive on the silver screen this fall starring Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman.
today’s ootd is perfect for a casual get together like a book club, lunch with the girls, or just bopping around town running errands. so how to wear a black vest? add a simple white tee tucked under a black vest, dark rinse denim, and slingbacks. this outfit will take you just about anyplace in style. and while i missed my regular gig with my book club buddies this month, my daughter-in-law is still in town, we made a run to our local frozen yogurt joint and splurged on salted caramel with a few yummy toppings. and we were able to bring mr. style a refreshing mixed berry froyo for an after-dinner treat. what a way to beat the heat! am i right?!

the vest comes with a self-tie which i tied in the back for a nice loose drape in the front. but i can see this vest tied in the front which would give it a polished trench-like look. didn’t i say it was versatile?
silver accessories are more laid-back than gold, so silver won the day.
i warned you these slingbacks would be on repeat all summer long! black shoes go with just about everything. but it’s the white flower detail that gives these shoes oomph. but they’re perfect a black vest and white tee

Another perfect ootd, Beth. I love vests and wear them year round. They’re a perfect addition to add oomph to your outfit.
Being from the Northeast originally, I love me my black and white! Cute basic ootd. Who is doing your photography now…just curious.
I went back to that previous post and had a chuckle at the English teacher who is not a fan of ee cummings’ style. I remember discovering the poet in high school, thanks to my English teacher. Wonderful! That teacher had a way of bringing Shakespeare to life and opening our eyes to all the wonders English literature has to offer. Thanks for that. I hadn’t thought about my teacher in a long time, but today I remembered, and counted my blessings for the gift of learning, discovery and broader horizons that he brought into our teenage lives. They don’t make them like that any more.
Cheers!

Hi Beth
So sorry to hear about mr style, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It is a hard journey but family, faith, and love make it possible to travel. I try to concentrate on making each day the best day. I have not bought jeans for years, if you were going to get one pair which ones would it be?
Thank you.
Love the look but I have a question. I looked up the vest and the care instructions said dry clean. Is that what you do?
Very nice. Will have to consider this when I make my next list of “what I need.”
Amazing outfit – and you wear it well! Black and white seem to be timeless.
Nice outfit. I can find those pieces already in my closet, thanks!
You look great in black and white.
Love the look, I would never thought of wearing a vest in summer but I love it!
Love this look!
“The Goldfinch” is one of my favorite books, and Donna Tartt is one of my favorite writers.
I’m a writer with a novel “Beneath the Wild Blue.” It’s the story of a Southern girl who becomes an Air Force wife in the 1950s, when being a “military wife” was a true call of duty. Lots of style references as the novel progresses through the Sixties and on through modern day. I’d love it if your book club would consider reading it. I’ve spoken to several book clubs and military spouse groups about the book.
You and your family are in my prayers, Beth

Beth,
You look great (as always). I love the slingbacks. I hope mr style enjoyed his froyo. Love and prayer to all of you.
Love the long vest. I’m a big fan of vests any time of year. This one is very versatile. You look great, Beth. I have thought of you and your gang all day since I read your posts about Mr Style. I am aching for you, and admire you all for “keep on keeping on.” Bringing Mr Style frozen yogurt sounds like a wonderful treat. I’ve been decluttering around our place lately, taking things to Goodwill, and on hot days, I’ve been known to stop off at Goodberry’s for a frozen custard myself here and there. Calcium, right?
The Goldfinch is a keeper!
You look adorable! I would never have thought to wear a black vest now, but it’s so cute!
