a jacket for fall. because if you love fall, or new york, or Central Park in fall especially, you’ll need a jacket. and you’ll know where the next quote comes from. but if you don’t, i’ll give you three guesses, and as always, the first two don’t count:
“don’t you love New York in the fall? makes me want to buy school supplies. i would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if i knew your name and address.”
indeed it is: it’s the great Norah Ephron’s words as said by the equally great Tom Hanks in, one of my personal favorites, You’ve Got Mail. it’s definitely one of my comfort movies. you know the type: the kind of movie you stop to watch when you’re flipping through cable; or the one that makes you want to visit New York in, well, the fall.

for those of you that don’t know, one of my kiddo’s lives in Brooklyn. five years and counting. i love to to visit him as much as possible. last fall, mr. style and i flew up for a long weekend, and i’m gonna keep that tradition alive this year. read the post where i shared what i packed for our 2018 NYC trip. so what to bring along on my 2019 trip? you guessed it, a jacket for fall.
this fall, it’s all about the color splash. keep your outfit simple and elegant by starting with a pair of cropped black pants (old, similar here) and a patterned black blouse from Lafayette 148. but make it all pop—like the leaves of fall—with a jacket for fall. this one is from Ann Taylor, and it’s lightweight. perfect for the early days of fall. i chose yellow, but you can go with whatever color suits your fancy. imagine how good this outfit would look with a red or orange jacket.

and if i’m going to be strolling midtown, downtown, or the upper west side, i’m going for chic— black satchel handbag (old, similar here and here) and pumps (old, similar here and here). i may be an (adopted) southerner now, but you know i can power walk with the best of ‘em. even in high heels.
all right, gang. let me know in the comment section below what’s your favorite comfort movie. is it You’ve Got Mail? or something else entirely? i can’t wait to hear!

Love this fall outfit!!!
Breakfast at Tiffanys….love it!
Yes to You’ve Got Mail, but add When Harry Met Sally (more fall in NYC!), While You Were Sleeping, and Sweet Home Alabama.
Favorite movies: When Harry Met Sally; Out of Africa, or most any chic flick.
Favorite movie “P. S. I love you “
My favorite comfort movie(s) are: Pretty Woman, Lady Hawk, A Princess Bride, and A Knights Tale. Also any good musical…almost a thing of the past!
Hi Beth, what a beautiful outfit, I’m so loving the colour, they really suit you. You may not always be feeling good considering what has been happening in your life but you are looking good.
I don’t know whether the colour of the jacket would suit me but I would certainly give it a go. Xoxo
Fabulous clothes, head to high-heeled toes! Love the colours, and the tradition… hugs all around.
I never miss Love Actually… or any movie with Alan Rickman.
I caught the last hour of Pretty Women night before last. I love Julia and Richard together. I’m also a Nora fan. I live all of her movies. I miss her.
Very chic outfit! The Princess Bride is a perfect comfort film.
Somethings Gotta Give with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Love her, he’s too funny and her Hamptons house is to die for.
Love the yellow jacket!!
“Sleepless in Seattle” is a favorite.
Must love dogs
Or
Serendipity are two favorites of mine.
While You Were Sleeping.
I am heading to NYC in October and yes, just ordered a red jacket although I love your yellow one. People think I am nuts to wear heels in the city but I don’t care. The look is more elegant. I hope you are getting used to your home being more quiet. Dogs help though , I should know. Harder to cook healthy for one. I wish someone would do a healthy food little cookbook for feeding one person (not the dog). Cheers:
I have a good cookbook for one that is veggies. Eat Your Veggies by Joe Yonan.
A favorite movie would be Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley.
There is a wonderful cookbook called “The Pleasures of Cooking for One” by Judith Jones, who was the editor for Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I plan on getting it, now that my own nest is emptying . . .

How about autumn in New York! sad…yes….but the scenery is gorgeous. Love the classy look.
My comfort movie is Moonstruck with Cher and Nicolas Cage. It’s like a comical Italian opera only set in NYC in the 80s.
Very pretty! You look lovely in this golden yellow color. I may have to buy this jacket. So versatile.
May I ask a question? How tall are you? You always look so nice in every outfit.
As for movies: I agree that Somethings Gotta Give is one of my favorites. Pillow Talk, aww…Doris Day & Rock Hudson! It’s Complicated and BabyBoom.
You look beautiful and I love the look of the new site. I noticed it right away. I have a question…what style jacket do you recommend for someone who is 5’3″ and gains her weight in the middle and bust areas? I love the short jackets but sometimes they are not flattering on me. Thanks, Bobbi Jo
I love this jacket. I have never worn this color, but I could give a try. My favorite is Sweet Home Alabama, but I also love You’ve Got Mail. I,watch it every chance I get. Love your blog. Have a great evening!
Beautiful and elegant. Love the yellow and black combination.
My favorite comfort movie is Wedding Date with Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney. Love the actors and British setting.
Dear Beth – I love Fall (right here in Atlanta) and I loved this post! You inspire me!
You look great, as usual! I love “Moonstruck” with Cher and Nicholas Cage.
I just love this jacket! I also love old movies. Casablanca is a favorite!
Favorite comfort movie: “Indiscrete” with heartthrob Cary Grant & Ingrid Bergman; “Sabrina” with Audrey Hepburn; & “ An Affair to Remember” also with Cary Grant!
Perfect transitional look. Lovely! I love NYC in the fall. When I was on the road recruiting, I’d always walk all over creation in the city, and I grew up on the outskirts of Manhattan, so I feel like I’m going home when I’m there. Enjoy your visit! As for comfort movies? Hmmmm…not exactly comfort, but I just love Out of Africa, and I love all the Jane Austen films–Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, etc. The English Patient. For unrequited love, it’s Remains of the Day. Moonstruck is always a fun favorite of mine from the past, and heck–it features NY in it. 4 Weddings & a Funeral is a good one, and Sideways is another. I could go on–I love movies.
My favorite move to stop and watch is the 1995 “Pride and Prejudice”. Also love “When Harry met Sally” for NYC. Love your look, I can’t wait for it to cool off enough to wear my autumn jackets. I do sneak and wear some now if I’m in cold air-conditioning all day long but looking forward to my fall colors.
Sabrina, the Audrey Hepburn version
Ohhhhh, hands down! “You’ve got Mail”!
So many reasons to love you Beth!
Fabulous post. I love watching Four Seasons with Carol Burnett and Alan Alda.
Hi Beth, once again you look fantastic, many thanks for all your inspirational outfits. You’ve Got Mail is definitely my favourite feel good movie as well.
Love “You’ve Got Mail” as well as “Sleepless in Seattle!” I’ll stop what I’m doing if I see either of those playing! My husband and I are headed to NYC for a long weekend at the end of this month. I’ll definitely re-read your 2018 post for style inspiration!
Hi Beth, You look so put together in this outfit! I liked all the movie suggestions but I wanted to add My Cousin Vinny. It always makes me smile. Hope you enjoy your visit with your son and New York.
What a lovely look! I just love black & gold together! – Love all these older movies mentioned! Bring on the old-fashioned “chick flix” romance movies with the happy endings! xo
Beautiful look! But I don’t know HOW your feet survive walking around NY in those spiky heels. I opt for low boots, leather sneakers, or “pretty” walking shoes (challenge to find but they do exist) with 1″ heels. Favorite comfort movie(s)–Out of Africa, Pride & Prejudice (starring Keira Knightley version).
Beth,
Love the outfit. Hard though for me to pull the trigger on a gold jacket during football season as a loyal Buckeye. Silly I know. 😉 I took my 18 yo son to NYC for the first time Easter weekend and he was enthralled with Brooklyn! Turns out his cousin, 9 days his junior, is equally taken. They both just started college, but I can totally see those two rooming together someday in Brooklyn – maybe with a little subsidy from mom and dad. 😉
Question for you while I’m thinking about it, my son is attending Ohio University, and I seem to recall there is a gentleman on faculty with the same last name as you. Relation or coincidence? Take care and I hope you’re doing well.
I can’t believe no-one has mentioned ‘Beaches’ or ‘Steel Magnolias’, two of my faves. Along with many mentioned – When Harry Met Sally, Serendipidy, Pretty Woman etc. Another cute one is Mrs. Henderson Presents (Judi Dench is always amazing!), and Sex and the City for more NY, it really is the 5th character in that movie.
Beth, I don’t often comment but am loving the blouse particularly in this outfit, how the yellow flower pairs with the yellow of the jacket. I’m 41 next month and your style is an inspiration as I settle in to who I am (aka, realize not to sweat the small stuff anymore).
I’m glad you mentioned a red jacket. I just bought one and was asked if I would wear it other that Xmas. Of course I will!
A great look. I love this shade of yellow. 🙂
NYC in the Fall is divine! Reviewing your OOTD encourages me it’s okay to be polished and to use my fashionable items every day. My comfort movie is
“Hello Dolly,” rarely on cable, but I’ll pop in the DVD once a year if I’m not feeling well. Wish there were more Walter Matthau movies! His “A New Leaf,” is also dear to me.
I love Sleepless in Seattle and Something to Talk About. Hope Floats is a good one too.
I am sure the boys say “my beautiful Mama”. Hope all us well
Stunning as always, Beth, love the yellow and the cut of the jacket…very flattering. Favorite comfort movie: “The Way We Were”
