This year feels extra special — America is celebrating its 250th birthday, the Semiquincentennial, and we’ll be flying back from our European vacation and landing in Georgia on July 3rd, just in time for the big celebration the next day. Talk about cutting it close! So if you’re anything like me, you may be wondering how to join in the patriotic fun without looking like a walking flag — ha! Here’s the good news: patriotic makeup can be surprisingly elegant when you work the red, white, and blue into your face in subtle, sophisticated ways. The trick is to think inspired by the three colors rather than wearing them literally — and that one shift is what keeps the whole look chic instead of costumey.

This is going to be a super easy mini tutorial you can practice on and gather a couple of new items for before July 4th rolls around. Let’s get into it.
If you’re anything like me, you may be wondering how to join in the patriotic fun without looking like a walking flag – Ha ha! Well, I have good news: wearing the red, white, and blue on your face CAN be surprisingly elegant when incorporated into your makeup in subtle, sophisticated ways.

Key Takeaways
- The secret to elegant patriotic makeup is wearing shades inspired by red, white, and blue — never the literal colors.
- Blue: Skip bright cobalt shadow for a smudged navy eyeliner, which is softer and more flattering than black on mature eyes.
- White: Brighten and lift the eye with a nude or white waterline pencil and a touch of matte white under the brow bone.
- Red: Trade fire-engine lipstick for a wearable cherry or rosy tint, then echo it with a soft rosy blush for a healthy flush.
- The goal: people notice you look beautiful and festive, not that you’re wearing every red, white, and blue product on the shelf.

The key is to think “inspired by” the 3 colors rather than wearing them literally. This is going to be a super easy mini tutorial that you can practice on and gather a couple new items to achieve this type of look before July 4th rolls around!

Start With Blue: A Navy Eyeliner That Flatters Mature Eyes
Let’s start with the blue. Instead of bright cobalt eyeshadow, try a NAVY BLUE eyeliner along the upper lash line, tightlined, and smudged with an eyeliner brush – this Bobbi Brown one, $36, is my go-to. Or, for more oomph, just go ahead and line that entire eye into the lower waterline if you want a more dramatic feel.
Product recommendations: I’m wearing the Maybelline Tattoo Studio gel pencil in “Striking Navy”, $12, here, but I’m dying to buy this “Navy Noir” shade in the Victoria Beckham Beauty Satin Kajal pencil, $34 (y’all know I have a weakness for her liners!).
Navy is softer and more flattering than black on many mature eyes, while still adding definition and making the whites of any color of eyes appear brighter. I’m pairing this navy liner with a blend of simple matte brown shadows from my most used Colourpop Stone Cold Fox palette, $35.
It’s a beautiful nod to the patriotic theme without screaming Fourth of July.
I went a tad further with this shade and applied my new L’Oreal Panorama “blue suede” navy blue mascara, $13, for a bit more flair because I do love a good “themed” makeup look! It honestly looks more like a soft black, but when it catches the light just right, it looks very navy! But of course, adding a traditional black or brown mascara works well too, paired with a navy liner.

Speaking of blue — I recently upgraded my tired old luggage with this bright cobalt medium check-in suitcase for $199, from Quince, a fun alternative to all the basic black bags I’ve hauled around for years. If you’ve been needing a suitcase refresh, check out my Instagram post showing it off — they’ve got loads of sizes and packing cubes too.
Add the White: Brightening Tricks That Open the Eyes
Next, bring in the white. There are a couple of ways to incorporate the white. One of my favorite makeup artist tricks for all women is placing a light nude or white eyeliner pencil along the lower inner waterline. The Tarte Fake Awake eye highlight pencils ($24, in nude or white) are my all-time faves for this. This instantly opens the eyes and creates a brighter, more awake appearance.
But since I chose to line my entire eye in navy blue, I decided to add white, with a matte white shadow right underneath my brow bone, to make it pop and give my eye bed a little lift.

Then, I finished with a white, shimmery shadow applied just to the inner corners of the eyes to catch the light and add a subtle sparkle worthy of fireworks! Both whites from the same Colourpop palette.

Finish With Red: The Most Wearable Patriotic Lip and Cheek
Finish with the red. Instead of reaching for an intimidating fire-engine-red lipstick, opt for a fresh cherry, watermelon, or rosy-red. These shades tend to be more wearable and flattering on mature skin while still delivering that patriotic pop of color.
I chose to line my lips first with the elf creamy glide liner in “cinnamatic,” $3, then added the Buxom Plump Shot lip serum, $29, in “Cherry Pop.” This shade is super low-key, with just a hint of cherry red that honestly makes natural lips look like they have a little more blood flow!
I love this formula because of the sheer tint with a juicy shine, but not sticky whatsoever. And it’s got a teeny-tiny cooling sensation that feels so refreshing.
Now, do you want bonus patriotic makeup points?? Coordinate your lip color with a rosy-red blush to create a healthy, youthful flush.
A red-toned blush may sound scary, but when applied lightly, it mimics the natural flush of healthy skin and brings life back into the complexion. Think sun-kissed picnic glow—not clown cheeks. It’s one of my favorite blush shades these days: the Morphe Cheek Thrills blush trio, $19, in “Cabana Club.”
