Are you bored with your usual brown eye makeup & nude lip looks? Then let me make the case for you to give BURGUNDY a try this winter season! This rich, deep red shade with its hints of purple, is a flattering alternative to your usual browns and taupes people often gravitate towards.
I promise you, incorporating this shade into your winter makeup routine, will give your complexion, no matter what it is, a welcomed boost of rich color that looks very sophisticated when you wear it. The intensity, depth, and warmth of this shade isn’t as tricky as say wearing a bright pink lip or cheek, that can sometimes look, well…cheap, if not done right!
Burgundy always looks expensive. Adding burgundy not only works for your makeup look, but also is exquisite worn in a luxury Teddy Blake handbag, $435, wrapping yourself in a burgundy sweater, $180, or adding a chic tailored burgundy coat, $120, with jeans, to your wardrobe. This shade just has that air of sophistication.
3 Ways to Wear Burgundy Makeup This Winter
Burgundy Makeup
So in today’s post, I’m going to walk you through 3 different ways to wear burgundy makeup.
- Simple LIP COMBO.
- Ramp it up with your CHEEKS + LIPS.
- Full drama with a BURGUNDY SMOKEY EYE!
For the first two burgundy looks I’ll be wearing the same eye + skin products that work well with shades of burgundy on the cheeks and lips. They are:
- Eyeshadows: I used my Natasha Denona My Dream Palette, $69, that is currently sold out everywhere, but she also has another palette full of beautiful burgundy shades here in the Retro palette, ($48, currently on sale) that can give you similar vibes to what I’m creating. I started with just a light taupe eyeshadow with a hint of warm taupe shimmer.
- Eyeliner: The absolutely gorgeous reddish brown Hourglass Voyeur gel eyeliner, $28, in shade “Chestnut” that I showed off over in my recent post here on SAACA on “Aging Eye Makeup Mistakes + How To Fix Them,” be sure to go read if you haven’t already! I’m only wearing it underneath my upper lash line as a tightline technique. Also wearing a nude eyeliner, tarte Fake Awake, $24, in my lower lash line.
- Mascara: Caliray Come Hell Or High Water Volumizing + Tubing mascara, $24. It’s become a new fave of mine in the tubing category and it’s a clean beauty product if that’s important to you!
- Foundation: Makeup by Mario Surreal Skin foundation in shade 5N.

Burgundy Lip Combo
Look #1: Burgundy Lip Combo. If you want to dip your toe into this shade, go for the easiest area – the lips! Try the universally flattering and iconic Clinique “Black Honey” Almost lipstick, $25. This shade feels amazing, sheer and hydrating, and looks good on every skin tone but very unique per person! To add a bit more structure to my thinning lips, I do like to add the Makeup by Mario sculpting lip pencil in shade “Lauren,” $24, and blend out the edges with the handy included lip brush on the end!

Burgundy Cheeks + Lips
Look #2: Burgundy Cheeks + Lips. Now go a step further and add in a burgundy-ish cheek color and let’s go a bit bolder on the lips! I decided to sport a cheek stain with a bold sparkle lip. The easy-to-use Milk Makeup lip + cheek stain in shade “Quickie”, $24, is a fresh-faced approach to a burgundy cheek and is easy to layer for a sheer wash of color, OR to be able to build up to a more dramatic cheek look.
Then for the lips I knew I wanted a bolder look since I stuck with the simple eye makeup. So I used two items I had around the house, to make my own signature holiday sparkle lip! I started with the Morphe velvet lip mousse, $12, in shade “Compatible,” which is deep dark burgundy. Then, before it had time to dry down, I popped on a sparkle eyeshadow topper!
I went with my scattered light glitter eyeshadows from Hourglass, $30 (bc they are SO sparkly) in shade “rapture” – more of a cranberry tone – and just tapped it onto the top of my lips with my finger. This combo actually stayed on SO well, I was pleasantly surprised, and looked so amazing in person. Watch me create this in action on my latest mini tutorial on Instagram reel here.

Burgundy Smokey Eye
LOOK #3: Burgundy Smokey Eye. Ladies don’t be scared of doing a smokey eye with burgundy – it’s actually so gorgeous!! I went back to my Natasha Denona palette, and pulled in shades of eggplant, deep plum, and of course burgundies. I placed the matte burgundy shade from lash line to slightly above my crease, then accented the crease with a deep shade of plum. And finished with a shimmery eggplant along my lower lash line with my skinny liner brush.
I also added in a deep wine shade of 24/7 eyeliner by Urban Decay called “Alkaline,” $23, and swiped it along the upper lash line and inside my lower waterline for added drama! This shade will make all eye colors POP from blue, green, hazel, and brown and it’s such an expected by fun addition to eye makeup.

For the lips, I used my fave cheap cheap gloss, the NYX Butter Gloss Bling!, that they now offer in shimmery shades! I chose the color,”Big Spender,” $6, which has a burgundy tone with a bit of rosy shimmer to it. So easy to wear and I’m shocked how much it sparkles to be only 6 bucks.
The rest of my look details: My Loft puff sweater is final sale and only available in a couple sizes, (I’m in a medium here but should’ve bought the small) but there are so many other pink and burgundy combo options here, here and here! // I’m wearing the crazy viral Hermes Kelly belt dupe, $19, from Amazon here also (the real thing is over $1K!) I’m sporting the elephant gray shade which goes with everything! // My candy cane Target earrings, $8, are mega cute don’t you think? // Also wearing the mid rise barrel jeans from Free People, $98, that I think even look great with heels.
