The right summer lip colors over 50 can do more for your face than a full face of makeup — and today I want to share six shades I reach for again and again! During this season, I don’t want anything heavy, drying, or high maintenance when it’s hot outside.

The best summer lip colors are hydrating, brightening shades that make you look more awake and rested — think sheer nudes, corals, and one perfect poppy red, not heavy mattes or deep winter tones. That’s the whole philosophy, ladies. I want lip shades that make me look healthier, prettier in vacation photos, and somehow more put-together with practically zero effort. A new lip color is literally THE easiest and cheapest way to update your makeup routine if you’ve been stuck in a rut, too!

And if you didn’t get to check out last week’s post on Why Your Makeup Might Look Worse in the Summer, be sure to go check out my quick fixes for this beauty issue!

Key Takeaways: My Summer Lip Lineup at a Glance

  • Everyday nude: MAC Lustreglass in “Thanks It’s MAC!” + “Spice” liner
  • Peachy coral: Maybelline Teddy Tint “Petalcore” + elf liner “Cinnamatic”
  • Rosy mauve: Clarins Lip Perfector in shade 07
  • Tangerine shine: Hourglass Phantom gloss in “Lucid”
  • Watermelon pink: Violette FR Bisou Balm in “Sucette”
  • Bright poppy red: MAC MACximal in “Lady Danger” + elf liner “Red Receipt”
  • Before all of it: exfoliate at night — smooth lips make every shade look better

Start Here: Lip Prep for Mature Lips

Before applying any lip color, you should definitely start by using a lip exfoliant daily. It’s a game-changer to use on your lips at night after you’ve brushed your teeth — your smooth, hydrated lips will look so much better in color if they’re not flaky and dry!

My cheap option would be the popular elf Cosmetics Lip Scrub, $6, or if you prefer the higher end, give the much-loved Tatcha Kissu Lip Scrub, $28, a go. Just do this step at night, ladies — you’ll thank me later.

Now, if I could narrow summertime lip color musts down to just six (which was HARD!), this would be the lineup below. I’ve paired my bare-lip picture with each shade so you can see exactly how the products perform.

SHOP THIS POST:

1. The Everyday Nude

MAC Lustreglass Sheer Shine lipstick, $27, in “Thanks It’s MAC!” + MAC lip pencil in “Spice,” $25.

This is the “my lips but prettier” shade. Perfect for casual lunches, sightseeing, no-makeup makeup, or when your eye makeup is doing more of the talking.

The key? Avoid any nude that is too beige or concealer-looking — on mature lips, a hydrating nude with a little pinky pearl feels so much fresher. And adding the iconic MAC “Spice” lip liner just makes it feel polished and gives the lipstick some depth. I love, love this combo!

2. The Peachy Coral

Maybelline Superstay Teddy Tint, $13, in “Petalcore” + elf Cosmetics Cream Glide lip liner, $3, in “Cinnamatic.”

Nothing says summer quite like peachy lips. Coral lipstick instantly brightens the complexion, makes skin look warmer, and somehow makes you look more rested — even if you’re surviving on vacation sleep.

Peachy coral lipstick over 50 — Maybelline Teddy Tint in Petalcore swatch

I created my own perfect peachy-coral lip by pairing this soft, velvety lip product with a warmer cinnamon-pink liner. I blurred the liner first, just around the outside of my lips, then filled in with the Teddy Tint. A perfectly comfortable matte lip with plenty of personality! Bonus — this sheer plush formula can also be worn as a cheek tint. I do it all the time!

3. The Rosy Mauve

Clarins Lip Perfector, $30, in shade 07.

If nude feels too plain and coral feels too bold, a rosy mauve is the happy middle ground. It’s feminine, flattering on nearly everyone, and one of the easiest “throw it on and go” shades for daytime.

I’m obsessed with the cushiony applicator and the glossy, comfortable feel of this sheer hydrating lip color — it contains wild mango butter and shea butter! This is one of those products that feels so good and makes your lips look so good that I constantly find myself reapplying.

4. The Tangerine Shine

Hourglass Phantom Volumizing lip gloss, $38, in “Lucid.”

For most women, a glossy pop of tangerine adds just enough warmth to keep the complexion from looking washed out in the summer months. It gives that effortless, confident “I just got back from vacation” glow.

I’m wearing NARS Afterglow Sensual Shine lipstick in “Truth or Dare” here, which seems to be sold out everywhere, but this Hourglass formula is a gorgeous alternative and feels so luxe — the highest shine ever! Believe me, get yourself one of these even if you skip the tangerine shade.

5. The Watermelon Pink

Violette FR Bisou Balm, $30, in “Sucette.”

This is the fun summer lip! Slightly brighter than your everyday pink but still wearable thanks to the blurring effect — wear it sheer, or layer it up for more pigment. It photographs beautifully, makes teeth look whiter, and gives that vacation-glow energy.

I wrote a whole post about the blurred lip trend here. And I love the tube on this one — there’s a little artwork right on the cap!

6. The Bright Poppy Red

MAC Cosmetics MACximal Silky Matte lipstick, $25, in “Lady Danger” + elf Cosmetics Cream Glide lip liner in “Red Receipt,” $3.

Bright poppy red MAC Lady Danger — a classic summer lip color for mature lips

Hear me out: every woman needs one summer red. Not deep winter red or berry red — something brighter, happier, and fresher, like this one. The kind of lip you wear with minimal makeup, sunglasses, and a white linen dress at dinner that instantly makes you feel chic!

This bright poppy red has been part of the MAC family for 20+ years, so you know it’s a good one with that kind of staying power. And it’s a comfortable matte formula that doesn’t dry out your lips. Truly a showstopper of a color!

The Blush That Goes With Everything

Curious what cheek color pairs nicely with ALL of these lip colors without leaning too pink, red, or coral? Try the Makeup By Mario Soft Pop Plumping Blush in “Barely Blushing” ($34), which I’m wearing in this post. It’s described as the perfect natural flush (it is!) and gives skin a healthy, dewy look.

Make sure to apply with a cream blush brush, $12 — and you can watch me using this blush in action on my Instagram reel here!

Common Questions About Summer Lip Colors

What is the best lip color for women over 50 in summer?

Hydrating, sheer-to-medium formulas in brightening shades — peachy coral, rosy mauve, and watermelon pink are the most universally flattering. Avoid anything too beige, too matte, or too dark, which can read flat and dry on mature lips.

What lip colors make you look younger?

Shades with warmth and a touch of shine — corals, rosy pinks, and glossy nudes with pearl — reflect light and brighten the complexion. Pair any of them with a soft lip liner to add definition back to the lip line.

Should mature lips wear matte lipstick?

Yes, but choose comfortable, modern mattes (like MAC’s MACximal or Maybelline’s Teddy Tint) rather than old-school drying formulas. And always exfoliate and hydrate first — matte color shows every dry patch.

How do you keep lipstick from feathering on mature lips?

Exfoliate at night, then use a lip liner along the lip line before applying color. A liner in a matching or slightly warmer shade creates a barrier and adds polish.

The Rest of My Look

(lips 10 — vest and mirror)

A chic black (or navy) and white striped vest looks perfectly nautical and summery! A few similar options: Evereve ($50)Boden ($69), and Target ($29). // My layered necklaces include a similar black-stoned necklace from Amazon, $21 (looks David Yurman-esque!) and a similar multi-charm necklace at Revolve, $45. // And I’ve been really impressed with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Sculpt + Volumizing mascara, $26 — my lashes have never looked better.

My summer lip philosophy? If a shade makes you look healthier, brighter, and just feel plain happier when you apply it — it belongs in your summer makeup bag. And if you need a really cute cosmetics bag for summer, definitely check out the offerings from Stoney Clover Lane Beauty.

Now your turn — tell me in the comments: what is the ONE lip color you can’t stop wearing this summer?!
