Because BeBe needs to be close to her babies.

Friends, I have some news — and it’s the best kind. My daughter-in-law is expecting Baby #2 at the end of September, which means June is getting a little sibling, and this BeBe is getting a very good reason to spend a lot more time in Atlanta

Here’s the plan: I’m keeping my home in Athens — it will always be my home base, the place where I feel most rooted. But I’ve decided to look for an apartment in the Dunwoody area of Atlanta so I can be close to my granddaughters whenever I’m needed. And trust me, BeBes are always needed.

So what does a woman do when she’s about to start apartment hunting? She puts on a great outfit, of course.

What I Wore Apartment Hunting

I firmly believe that how you show up matters — even when you’re just walking through empty rooms and peering into closets. This look is pure American Classic: polished enough to feel intentional, comfortable enough to climb three flights of stairs if the elevator is “temporarily out of service.”

Shop the Look

  • Talbots Sweater — The ivory with navy trim is everything. It’s the kind of sweater that looks expensive and effortless at the same time. Classic, collegiate, and completely versatile.
  • J.McLaughlin Ivy Pants — Navy ankle pants that fit beautifully and go with absolutely everything. This is the kind of piece that earns its place in your closet for years.
  • Everlane Day Glove Flats — Comfortable enough for a full day of walking and touring, chic enough to look put-together doing it.
  • Quince Suede Handbag — The taupe suede barrel bag is so on-trend right now, and the quality from Quince never disappoints. Great everyday bag.
  • Jeanie Jacket — Spring weather can be unpredictable, which is why a tech jacket (with removable hood) is a must-have.

A New Chapter — and Why I’m Excited

I’ll be honest: the idea of having a second home didn’t occur to me until I realized how much I was missing by being an hour and a half away. With June at the age she is now — so curious, so funny, so completely herself — every visit feels both too short and too precious to rush.

And with Baby #2 arriving in September? Can you believe it? Another girl! I want to be the grandmother who shows up. Not the one who has to make a production of the drive.

Athens will always be home. My roots are there, my life is there, and Ollie absolutely refuses to relocate. But having a little pied-à-terre in Atlanta feels right. It feels like exactly what this chapter of life calls for — leaning in, showing up, and staying close to the people who matter most.

What I’m Already Bringing With Me

One of the things I love about starting fresh in a new space is the chance to be intentional about what goes in it. I’m not starting from zero — I already have a few key pieces that will make any apartment feel like home immediately.

Leesa Mattress

Here’s my philosophy on setting up a new space: the bed comes first. I don’t care if there’s no couch yet, no kitchen table, no artwork on the walls — if I can get a good night’s sleep, everything else can wait. A well-rested woman makes better decisions, shows up better for her grandchildren, and frankly, looks better doing it. So before I find a single piece of furniture for this apartment, the mattress is already handled.

A good night’s sleep is non-negotiable, and I already have my Leesa mattress sorted. Here’s what I love about it: the Leesa Original is a 10-inch all-foam mattress with a medium-firm feel that works beautifully for side and back sleepers — which I am. It contours to your body, relieves pressure on the hips and shoulders, and the foam is specifically designed to keep you cool rather than trap heat. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold certified and made with CertiPUR-US® certified foams, which means no harmful chemicals and low emissions — the kind of detail that matters more to me the older I get. It arrives as a mattress-in-a-box, expands beautifully, and comes with a 100-night trial so you can truly sleep on it before committing. If you’ve been considering one, use my code BETH75 to save $75.

Ruggable Washable Rugs

Two Ruggable rugs are already on my list — a kitchen runner and a second one for the living room. Can I just say: a washable rug with grandchildren is absolutely genius. Ruggable, what would I do without you? For an apartment where little ones will inevitably be involved in crafts, snacks, juice boxes, and general beautiful chaos, washable is the only way to go. I don’t want to be precious about my rugs, but they also have to look good, and Ruggable has an endless assortment of styles and colors. I want to throw them in the wash and get back to the fun part.

A plaid kitchen runner might be the most cheerful thing I’ve ever seen. The cream base with those multi-color stripes — red, green, teal, gold — feels like a proper heritage plaid that’s been given a fresh, modern update. It’s the kind of thing that makes you happy every single time you walk into the kitchen. Which, when you’re a grandmother with a grandbaby on the way, happens approximately 400 times a day.

You know how some pieces just announce themselves? This leopard print rug with the khaki border does exactly that — in the best possible way. It’s giving Ralph Lauren safari library, and I am completely here for it. The neutral border keeps it grounded, so it works with everything, but make no mistake: this rug is the personality in the room. And when the grandchildren inevitably spill something on it? Into the wash it goes. That’s the Ruggable magic.

Making It Feel Like Home: Flamingo Estate

The kitchen and the bedroom are always my first focus when I move into a new space. Get those two rooms right and everything else falls into place. And both rooms get a candle — because that’s just how I do things.

The kitchen gets the Flamingo Estate Heirloom Tomato Candle, which is unlike anything I’ve ever burned. It captures the green, herbaceous essence of a summer garden — ripe tomatoes on the vine, freshly watered, leaves at their most fragrant. It makes the kitchen smell like you actually know what you’re doing in there.

The bedroom gets the Jasmine Damask Rose XL Candle — and if the Heirloom Tomato is the candle for living, this one is the candle for being. Intoxicating jasmine and sweetly floral Damask Rose with bright waves of Bergamot and Orange Blossom — it’s the kind of scent that makes a room feel like a sanctuary the moment you walk in. Both are hand-poured in Los Angeles in beautiful recyclable glass, and both make extraordinary gifts.

And the kitchen also gets properly stocked — starting with the Chef’s Kiss set. Three essential ingredients that belong in every kitchen: a green, peppery olive oil, deep floral honey from bees foraging on wildflowers in the Los Angeles mountains, and a Salsa Macha made with chipotle chiles smoked for 48 hours by the Aquino family in Veracruz. Whether you’re cooking a real dinner or just drizzling things over crusty bread, this set makes everything taste like you know what you’re doing. Chef’s Kiss comes in an embossed gift box finished with a grosgrain bow — buy one for yourself and one for someone you love.

Flamingo Estate is a Los Angeles-based brand that sits at the intersection of the garden, the kitchen, and the senses. Everything they make — from candles to pantry staples — is rooted in botanical ingredients, small-batch craftsmanship, and the philosophy that everyday life deserves to be beautiful. It’s one of those brands that once you discover it, you can’t imagine your home without it.

What I’m Looking for in an Atlanta Apartment

I’ve been thinking about what matters most, and it comes down to a few things:

  • Close to June and Baby #2 — proximity is the whole point
  • A guest room or comfortable sofa bed situation for when the boys visit
  • Good light — I cannot live in a cave
  • Space for Ollie when she makes the trip (she’s very particular about square footage)
  • A kitchen I can actually cook in — BeBe does not do takeout every night

I’ll be documenting the whole process right here — the tours, the decisions, the inevitable moment I fall in love with something completely impractical. Stay tuned.

Style Has No Expiration Date — and Neither Does Starting Fresh

One of the things I’ve learned in this season of life is that new chapters don’t stop coming — and the best thing you can do is walk into them with intention. And ideally, a great outfit.

If you’re in a season of change right now, too, I’d love to hear about it. Drop a comment below and let’s talk. That’s what this community is for.

Are you in a new chapter right now? Tell me about it in the comments below — I read every single one.

A new baby and a new location. All I can say is HOW EXCITING!!

    1. Beth Djalali

Right?! It’s a lot of wonderful happening all at once and I am here for every bit of it! 💛

  3. sherry ulrich

Love the sweater from Talbots! The whole outfit is so smart. Casual but so classy. Congratulations on becoming a BeBe again. It is nice that you can be able to have an apartment close to your grandchildren. They grow up so fast! I know you have another granddaughter too with one of your other son’s and daughter-in-law’s. You are so blessed.

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much — that Talbots sweater is such a good one, isn’t it? Classic with just enough personality. And yes, I am so incredibly blessed — June, Baby #2 on the way, and my precious Nairai too. These granddaughters have my whole heart. They do grow up so fast, which is exactly why BeBe is getting an apartment! 💛

      1. Leilani

        Where does Nairai live?

        1. Beth Djalali

          Athens

  4. Mary Ellen Dearborn

As a Nana I am following you from city condo living to an apartment to be closer to my grandchildren.
I lost my husband 5 yrs ago . Every decision seems bigger when you are making it alone .

I will need to downsize considerably from a closet perspective but already thinking about how my new place will look .

Love your direction about bedroom first !!

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh this comment stopped me in my tracks. You are speaking my language on every level — the big decisions that feel even bigger when you’re making them alone, the closet situation (a very real consideration!), and the excitement of imagining a new space. I lost my husband too, and you’re absolutely right. But here we are — two Nanas doing it anyway, with style. The bedroom first, always. I’m rooting for you every step of the way. Please keep me posted! 💛

  5. PJ HALL

I live about 30 minutes (or less, depending on traffic) away from my grandkids. You only have a small window of time before they grow up and are off to college (grandson is in second year of college).
So do the things you want to do with them. Make the memories. Play the games. Take photos. It’s a special time of both your and their lives.

    1. Beth Djalali

This hit me right in the heart — thank you for this gentle and wise reminder. 💛 You are so right, the window is smaller than we think and I refuse to let it close without being present for as much of it as possible. Games, photos, ordinary moments, all of it. That is exactly why I am making this move. I hope you are cherishing every moment with your college grandson too — that season has its own kind of magic. Thank you for sharing this. 🥂

  6. Julie

I went through the same process as you are in now. Such a good decision on our part to get an apartment near our granddaughter. It was also fun setting up the apartment with Ikea furniture plus some pieces from home to ground them. It felt fresh and yet immediately homey.
I didn’t want to be a grandmother who flew in for special occasions. Instead I’m part of normal life, and I’m finding friends of my own here too. A great gift at this time in my life. Cheers to you on your journey!

    1. Beth Djalali

“I didn’t want to be a grandmother who flew in for special occasions” — that line just stopped me cold because that is exactly it. That is exactly why I’m doing this. Part of normal life, finding your own friends, making it truly yours with a mix of new and familiar pieces. You have given me the most beautiful preview of what’s ahead and I am so grateful. Cheers to you right back! 💛

  7. Grandma Judy

So glad you like that sweater . I have been keeping my eye on it since it 1st came out at my Talbots. I really don’t need another sweater but it is so cute and now on sale plus 40% off. Umm. May have to go shopping! Aren’t grandchildren wonderful! Even though ours are all adults we love them and have a great time with them. And we have 3 wonderful great grandchildren to spoil too. Have fun apartment hunting!!

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh you absolutely need that sweater — especially on sale plus 40% off! That is not a want, that is a sign! 😄 And great grandchildren — now that is the ultimate blessing. You are living proof that the best chapters just keep coming. Thank you so much! 💛

  8. Benita Goodwin

Hi Beth- so excited for you. I think I told you I am GiGi to 3 beautiful granddaughters. Ages 11, 10 and the baby turns 1 in a week. My husband and I live in the in-law pod my SIL added- it’s like a giant one bedroom apartment with full kitchen and laundry room-my husband and I live .next to the oldest two and the baby lives about 10 mins by cat. I baby sit her m-th while my other daughterm and SIL work. Beth I just love it. You are right we are always needed. Your family is so blessed to have you and your wisdom, your style, your grace. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.😊

    1. Beth Djalali

GiGi! This is the most beautiful setup I have ever heard — a pod right next door to two of your granddaughters and ten minutes from the baby. You are living the dream and you know it! Thank you for painting that picture for me because it just makes me even more excited about what’s ahead. And thank you for your incredibly kind words — this community means everything to me. Right back at you! 💛

  9. Arna

Congratulations! How exciting! When we retired in 2021, we knew we wanted to move closer to our son in law, daughter, and first grandson. We built our dream home, 40 minutes from them. Then grandson #2, and I took care of him for a year. When we knew we’re getting a granddaughter, and I would be taking care of her for the first year, we realized we needed to move closer. We gave up a lot, but we are now 20 minutes from them. We are glad we moved, found a new house in a development, something we never thought we would do. But we are getting used to it, meeting new people, and realizing having a small lot is much better than 1 1/2 acres to maintain. A new stage of life for us in our 70’s.

    1. Beth Djalali

What a journey — a dream home, then the wisdom to know that being closer mattered more than the dream home. That takes real clarity and real courage. And you are right, a smaller lot at this stage of life is a gift in itself! New neighbors, new friends, more time for the people who matter most. You are thriving in your 70s and that is everything. Thank you for sharing this — it means more than you know! 💛

  10. Suzanne

Wow! Congratulations on another girl! This will be another great adventure. I am delighted for you and your family.

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much! Another granddaughter — I am absolutely over the moon. This family is full of girl power and I love every bit of it! 💛

  11. Joanie

I enjoyed reading about your new adventures in apartment hunting to be closer to your grandchildren. I will be following your process.
I live in California and my grandchild is in Florida. My husband and I have been looking for something in Florida to be closer to our grandson, son and daughter in law part time. We average visiting every other month. I love my home and community here in CA, but my heart is in two places because of our grandson.
Thank you for posting about this new adventure of yours. It’s very relatable and so helpful.

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh, this made my heart so happy to read — and I completely understand the “heart in two places” feeling. It’s one of the most bittersweet realities of modern grandparenting, isn’t it? Our grandchildren have a way of rearranging our entire sense of home.

The fact that you and your husband are navigating this together sounds like such a gift. I’m doing it solo, which adds its own layer of adventure! 😄 Florida is such a wonderful choice for a part-time base — the lifestyle, the weather, the fact that your grandson gets to grow up knowing you’re just a short drive (not a cross-country flight) away. That matters so much more than we even realize in the moment.

I’ll keep sharing the process — the good, the overwhelming, and the “why is apartment hunting so exhausting” moments — because if it helps even one person feel less alone in this season of life, that’s everything. Thank you for reading, and for taking the time to share your own story. It means more than you know. 💛
Wishing you and your husband all the best as you find your Florida home base!

  12. Laurie Cloughly

Congratulations, I am very happy for you!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much, that is so kind of you! It’s an exciting new chapter and I appreciate you cheering me on. 💛

  13. Carolina Girl

You’re so wise, Beth. I love that you’re doing this! Congratulations to your family on the upcoming (third) new baby. Please keep us in the loop … fun to see what you choose. And how fun to be in Atlanta p-t!

    1. Beth Djalali

You are so sweet, thank you! 💛 And yes — we are absolutely over the moon about baby number three arriving in September! Three grandchildren… I still can’t quite believe it. June and Nairai are going to be the best big cousins. I will definitely keep you all in the loop as the Atlanta apartment search unfolds — it’s equal parts exciting and overwhelming, but in the best possible way. And you’re right, being there part-time is going to be so special. Thank you for following along and cheering us on! It means everything. 🥂

  14. Tina

    Hello,
I followed years ago and am a return follower as of late. Have you done a post about cooking for one, not having tons of leftovers? I get tired of take out and do miss cooking.
I understand being closer to your grands. The plan for me is to move onto my middle daughters property in a few years to be nearer as well.
    Thank you.
    Tina

    1. Beth Djalali

Tina, welcome back — I am so glad you found your way back here! 💛 That is such a sweet plan, moving onto your daughter’s property. What a gift for everyone involved.

As for cooking for one — honestly, this is such a great topic and one I hear about so often. I haven’t done a dedicated post on it yet, but you’ve just bumped it up my list! In the meantime, my friend Kelly covers food content here on the blog, and it’s definitely a conversation worth having. Stay tuned — I think this one deserves its own post! Thank you for the inspiration, Tina. 🙏

  15. Bonnie

I know you will love being closer!!! How exciting and can’t wait to hear all the details. My husband use to fly and we flew to B’ham and drove to Atlanta for Street of Dreams several times and I met up with friends and had the best time. He didn’t care for landing a private plane in such a huge air space as Atlanta. 🙂

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh how fun — Streets of Dreams in Atlanta is such a good time! And I completely understand your husband’s feelings about that Atlanta airspace — it is NO joke! 😄 Hartsfield is one of the busiest airports in the world, so I can only imagine what that’s like from the cockpit. What a wonderful way to have explored the area though — flying in, meeting up with friends, making memories. I am so excited for this next chapter and I promise to share all the details as they unfold! Thank you for following along! 💛

  16. Cathy

We moved a year ago to be near our son, DIL, and 2 grandchildren. We only lived 2 1/2 hours away, but that was too far for me! I do miss my sister and my friends, but as we reached our 70s, we realized family is so important and we didn’t want to miss all the milestones! Our children are both military, so we have never had a chance to live nearby. We’re enjoying making new friends and setting up our new home. Best of luck with your apartment hunting! You are definitely making the right choice!

    1. Beth Djalali

This just made my heart so full — thank you for sharing your story! And what a beautiful decision you and your husband made. You are so right, 2½ hours sounds manageable until you realize how many little moments slip by. The milestones, yes, but also just the ordinary Tuesday afternoons that turn out to be the ones you remember most.

The fact that your children are military makes your commitment to showing up even more meaningful — they have moved and sacrificed so much, and now you get to be the steady presence for those grandchildren. That is such a gift.

I love that you’re making new friends and settling in — that’s the part I’m both excited and a tiny bit nervous about, honestly! But you’ve given me so much encouragement. Thank you for cheering me on, and congratulations on your own brave move! 💛

  17. Cheryll Sampson

That is so exciting about the new baby and your apartment search. I lived near mine until they grew up and would not take anything for those years. They grow up so fast, but we have so many great memories.

    1. Beth Djalali

This is exactly what I needed to hear — thank you! 💛 You are so right, they grow up in the blink of an eye and I refuse to miss more than I have to. The fact that you look back on those years with such joy tells me everything I need to know. I am making the right move! Thank you for the encouragement — it means more than you know. 🥂

  18. Andrea Roberts

Congratulations on this wonderful new chapter! You will have a blast decorating your new place I’m sure. Maybe look at condos in addition to apartments? I’m thrilled for you!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much! 💛 And oh, you are speaking my language — the decorating is honestly half the excitement! 😄 And great suggestion on condos — I am absolutely keeping that option open. There’s something appealing about a little more permanence and the ability to truly make it my own. Stay tuned because I have a feeling the search process is going to make for some great content! 🥂

  19. Dr. Martha

Even with the challenges of aging I too try to maintain a classy sense of style. I would love to follow your journey to my old Dunwoody stomping grounds…😁

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh how fun — a fellow Dunwoody girl! 😁 I would love to hear your favorite spots and hidden gems as I get to know the area. And yes — classy style at every age and every chapter, that is what we are all about here! Age is just a number and we are not going out without a fight. 😄 Thank you for following along — this is going to be a fun ride! 💛

  20. Susan

You are a woman of inspiration, style, and courage! Looking forward to seeing your apartment hunting process and your expanding role as BeBe!

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh my goodness, you just made my whole day! 💛 What a beautiful thing to say. BeBe to three — I still have to pinch myself! The apartment hunt, the new baby coming in September, all of it feels like such an exciting new season of life. Thank you for being here and cheering me on — it truly means everything! 🥂

  21. Debbie Harwood

So happy for you and your family! My spouse and I are in the same relocation situation. Enjoy every minute.

Best wishes and Good Health to you and your family.

    1. Beth Djalali

So happy for you and your family! My spouse and I are in the same relocation situation. Enjoy every minute.

Best wishes and Good Health to you and your family.

  22. Nancy Hollen

Just saying, you may not end up a BeBe. My mother in law wanted Grandmother, my son said Nanny and that was that! I wanted Grammy, ended up Mimi.
Your girls will pick what they want to call you and you will love it no matter.

    1. Beth Djalali

Ha, you are so right and I love this! 😄 Honestly the grandchildren are always the ones who decide, aren’t they? Lucky for me June and Nairai have already crowned me BeBe, so I think it’s officially mine — but you better believe whatever baby number three lands on, I will answer to it with my whole heart! 💛 Thank you for the laugh — this made my day!

  23. Nancy

Beth, what an exciting adventure for you! So wonderful that you desire to be a “present” grandmother. It is so key in a child’s life.
It will be fun to come along for the ride! Thanks for sharing this; looking forward to it! Good luck!

  24. Marilyn Weinstein

    Dear Beth,

Congratulations on your second grandchild. I am thrilled for you and your entire family. I am originally from Florida and we say “Glamma” instead of grandma. A funny play on words. I now live permanently in Asheville, North Carolina. I hope someday I get either title. Please keep us posted as to the new arrival.

    Hugs,

    Marilyn

  25. Wendy

A huge congratulations to you and your lovely family.
Happy apartment hunting and enjoy all the joy what’s going to happen x

  26. Tami Eppley

Thank you. I have always enjoyed your fashion inspiration and have just recently found your grief video and it was so helpful. You have the ability to encourage and inspire others . You exude a calming energy and confidence. Bless your heart. (I’m 66 and love your style!)

  27. Lynne Lister

Best decision ever to move to the community our first grandchild lived in, and now we have 4 here! Home is indeed where the heart is.❤️

    1. Beth Djalali

Four grands nearby — what a blessing! You’re giving me all the inspiration I need. Home really is where the heart is. ❤️

  28. Cate

    Beth,
How exciting! A new grandbaby and a new location!

I am MeMaw to three grands, and they live in the same housing edition! They are close enough to walk to our house. One of the most exciting things in our life was when our DIL found a house near us that she loved.

I love reading your posts each week, and especially love shopping for the looks.

Talbots is one of my favorite stores.

    Wishing you all the best,

    1. Beth Djalali

MeMaw, what a gift to have your grands within walking distance — that’s the dream! So happy for you. And yes, this next chapter feels like such a sweet one. Thank you for being here each week and for the kind words — Talbots fans unite!
