cheers to friday! cheers to the weekend! let’s kick it off with a yummy black ‘n blue grilled steak salad. it’s easy to make and oh so delicious. one of my kiddos stopped by for dinner, so this is what i whipped up. steak and salad are a summer go-to so why not put them together in one big salad? nothing better than firing up the Weber Grill for a ribeye steak on Friday night especially when guests are over. it’s easy to grill, chat and savor the summer weather. just make sure you have bug spray nearby. whenever steaks are on the menu, i love to drink a dirty gin martini. shaken, not stirred. so join us for another edition of fridays with oscar.
madras shorts and polo tee (similar here) are from my favorite designer of all-time Ralph Lauren. the shorts have a matching blazer that turns it into a shorts suit that’s a chic upscale look perfect for a resort vacation. platform sandals are back in action today. with summer on the downside, i want to squeeze in every opportunity to wear shorts and sandals. before you know it jeans and booties will be our everyday go-to’s.
Add the gin or vodka, vermouth and olive brine to a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until well-chilled.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with a skewer of olives.
martinis should be garnished with three olives, odd numbers are good luck, or so they say. the first olive is eaten after the first sip with the third olive eaten at the last sip.
2tablespoonsMcCormick Smoky Montreal Steak Seasoning
6–8cupschopped romaine lettuce
¼red onion – thinly sliced
2avocados – sliced
½cupcherry tomatoes – halved
⅓cupblue cheese crumbles
Croutons
2slicesthick-cut white bread
3tablespoonsolive oil
½teaspoonGarlic Powder
Blue Cheese Dressing
1cupmayo
¼cupplain greek yogurt
½teaspoonWorcestershire sauce
½teaspoonsalt
¼teaspoonfresh cracked black pepper
2teaspoonsapple cider vinegar
½cuphalf and half – or other milk
4ouncescrumbled blue cheese
Instructions
Cut bread into 1-inch cubes and place in a bowl. Drizzle with the olive oil and toss to coat. Sprinkle with garlic powder. Add olive oil to the skillet then add bread, tossing until crisp and brown.
Prepare the blue cheese dressing while the croutons are cooking. In a blender or food processor combine mayo, greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, vinegar, and milk and pulse until smooth. Add half of the blue cheese crumbles and pulse again until smooth. Transfer to a bowl and gently stir in remaining blue cheese crumbles. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
Preheat your grill to medium heat. Prepare your steak by sprinkling generously with the steak seasoning and massage it into the meat with your finger tips (on both sides of the steaks).
Grill steaks 6-8 minutes on each side until cooked to desired doneness. Allow steak to rest for 5 minutes on a cutting board, then thinly slice.
Arrange salads with lettuce on the bottom, then top with steak, avocados, red onions, tomatoes, croutons, blue cheese crumbles, and blue cheese dressing. Serve immediately.
homemade croutons are so easy to make. slice leftover or stale bread into cubes, then toast in olive oil.

Hi Beth,
I’m 77 years old and I love your style and your dog,!! I have to say we resemble each other, my hair is very short and now I see you are growing yours. I’m so undecided, I had a bob , then cut it all off. I like the martini you made, I also enjoy it once in a while. Have a nice weekend.
Beth, everything about this menu sounds so tasty. Lovd me a goid dirty gin martini. However, I have never used Hendricks before. How well does the cucuber pair with the olive?
Those shorts are adorable. Madras brings me back to junior high! Have always loved it. The matching jacket is a treasure. You must style the suit for us sometime!
Hi, Beth,
Love this salad idea, and would love to make it! One question that I have is..what is the yellow marinade that is shown in your pic, under the raw steak? It seems to be clinging to that steak on the grill, pic, too. Looking forward to your answer!
Thank you!
Karen
Blown away by the whole post. Love the outfit down to your toes. Seeing how much Oscar loves you makes me smile and that steak is making me hungry. Looks good.
I’m confused. Your cocktail recipe mentions dry vermouth. But your photographs display Martini Rosso, which is a sweet, dark red vermouth. And then the photograph of the cocktail in the glass shows a yellow liquid, which it wouldn’t be if you had used Martini Rosso. So which is it?
I love that combination on you.
I can wear short sleeves.
You have very nice arms and legs.
My legs are ok.
Thank you Beth for sharing your happy day with OSCAR
I met with my orthopedic surgeon yesterday and decided to have knee replacement surgery.
One of my first thoughts was to watch the Style at a Certain Age youtube video in which you discuss knee surgery. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It is so helpful to know what to expect. And, since I’ve spent the summer in flats, I’m so please to see you in heels.
I truly appreciate the time, effort and honesty of your blog.
Hi Beth. It’s so much fun seeing you and Oscar enjoying life! I too am widowed and have a big dog that keeps me company. His name is Dallas and he LOVES to play ball. I love your style (what a classy lady) and your recipes. Thank you for sharing all with us! Have fun at the beach!!
I loves me a good dirty martini–guess I need to go and get some vermouth and vodka! Have been a fan of madras since high school, but unfortunately have never been able to find any that suit me. And I’d wear the blazer and shorts in a New York minute–great look.
Enjoy the vacay weekend!
LOVE Ralph Lauren! The outfit is great.
The recipe is also great.
BTW, for folks who don’t know, there have been mysterious deaths of birds around feeders (all over the web), so the recommendation is to take feeders down. I miss ours so much!
What a great recipe! Love all the pictures today! Also love your outfit! You look so trim and the outfit is so flattering on you! Enjoy your vacation!!!

Hendricks is one of my favorite gins. I am looking forward to putting this meal together tomorrow evening. It sounds and looks delicious.
