Holiday Outfits for Women Over 50: Festive Looks for Christmas, Parties & New Year’s Eve

Welcome to Holiday Style Season

The holidays have officially arrived here in Athens, Georgia, and my closet isn’t the only thing feeling festive — the house is decked out, too. Now, full disclosure: these décor photos are from 2024 because I am firmly a day–after–Thanksgiving decorator. Yep, I’m a one-holiday-at-a-time traditionalist, even when Thanksgiving lands fashionably late on the calendar. Old habits die hard! Thanks, Mom — your voice still rings in my ears: “No Christmas tree until the turkey leftovers are gone.”

So while I’m counting down the days until I can pull the bins from the attic, I still wanted to sprinkle last year’s holiday magic throughout this post. Consider it a festive preview of what’s to come later this month… plus the perfect backdrop for a few fabulous holiday outfits.

If you’re also in the middle of holiday prep, you might enjoy how to set a chic Thanksgiving bar cart your guests won’t stop talking about, or if you have winter weddings on the calendar, I recently rounded up petite-friendly winter wedding guest dresses that are absolutely stunning this time of year. And if you’re feeling unsure about holiday dressing in general, don’t miss my style rules for women over 50 — a great confidence booster before the festive season kicks into high gear.

Today I’m sharing holiday outfits for women over 50, along with touches of holiday décor woven throughout. Think of this post as a blend of style inspiration and a cozy holiday house tour, all wrapped up with a ribbon on top.

Whether you’re heading to a Christmas luncheon, hosting family, attending a cocktail party, or planning a sparkling New Year’s Eve, these looks will carry you through the season with polish, charm, and confidence.

Let’s unwrap them one by one.

✨ Beth’s Style Tips for Holiday Dressing

1. Go Monochrome for Instant Elegance

No thinking required — just chic.

2. Add One High-Impact Accessory

Let one piece do the heavy lifting.

3. Structure + Shine = Perfect Balance

If the fabric is shiny, keep the silhouette crisp.

4. Warm Layers, Not Bulky Layers

Be festive, not frozen.

5. Choose Shoes You Can Celebrate In

Comfort is chic.

6. Coordinate With Your Partner (Without Matching)

Think complementary, not twinsies.

7. Dress for the Photos You’ll Want to Keep

Avoid tiny prints or overly shiny fabrics.

  • Sparkling heels tie everything together

🌺 Look 5: Floral Blouse + Black Trousers (Festive Yet Chic)

Bold florals bring color without going full sequin. This is the perfect “holiday, but make it relaxed” outfit.

Why it works:

  • Pink and red tones feel seasonally appropriate
  • Black trousers keep the look polished
  • Great for long days of celebrating

Perfect for casual gatherings, dinner with friends, or church services.

    Happy Holidays,
It’s always a pleasure to see what styles you have to share; along with decorating and hosting tips. I like dressing with style and being casual. Your posts are encouraging and helpful. Thank you for all the effort you put in to your newsletters.

  3. CYNTHIA ANDERSON

Those outfits are beautiful but will you be sharing a more casual look for the holidays? We go to Greenfield Village for their Holiday Days outdoors. Thanksgiving and Christmas is usually opening gifts with the family and grandkids. I’m generally on the floor playing with them. I want to look put together but able to play.

    Blessings

  4. Kathleen Margoles

I work at the Buckhead Talbots & I love when you feature our clothes. I recommend your blog to my customers all the time!

  5. Kathleen Kutz

You are so stylish! I have been trying to buy longer lasting wear such as Merino wool but it’s not very glamorous. I like the warmth however.

I am going to be in Paris the first two weeks of December (after Morocco, Spain and now Egypt. I have been saving links to high fashion second hand stores in Le Marais. I’m thinking a sequined top as I got rid of many things when I moved to Mexico. I would love a royal blue sequined top, embroidered sweater. We’ll see what happens! I did treat myself to a Hermes scarf during my layover at the airport in Paris. No crowds, just me. Then I went next door to the Chanel store. A very nice saleswoman helped me try on the classic cropped Chanel jackets I love. So nice to have this experience without the crowds of Paris proper. And, I would be intimidated by the high fashion people and I’m not fond of crowds.

  6. Nancy

Oh Beth…I hope you have a place to go in every one of these outfits! All gorgeous! I’m particularly partial to anything red at Christmas time, but the black dress looks tres chic!
I’m with you, a traditionalist. My Christmas decorating will start the day after Thanksgiving. Your 2024 decor is so pretty. It’s hard to wait isn’t it? Lol.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!

  20. Julie Berry

This was a very timely post as I was just going through my “holiday capsule” items this morning. I love the tuxedo dress and also the pink skirt outfit. Very Carolina Hererra. My style leans toward simplicity and mixing masculine/feminine. I have a tuxedo style blazer that I plan to wear with a black sequin skirt this season.
Thanks for all the inspiration you give me.

  21. Nancy Moss

I especially liked the all white outfit, and the red power suit. You do look great in all the outfits.

  22. Katherine

    Hi Beth,
I just find that looking at what you share makes me smile, and feel inspired. You look pretty in all the pics here, super duper festive.
By the way I left a post on Oscar’s birthday and I don’t think it ever got delivered and I don’t know why. I loved all the pictures and since you and Mr. Styles had him in my home town of SF till present. He must bring you immense joy, comfort, and such a wonderful companion. Ollie is sweet too, I don’t think you want to mess with her, she looks like she can take care of herself. Street wise fur baby. I love all animals, have had two dogs in my life, however I’m more of a cat lady. We had two Birman’s Romeo, and Juliet. Romeo was 19 years young when he passed to heaven. I still miss him terribly. There is no time frame for grieving.
Have a lovely week. Stay safe out there.
