Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day! It’s the time of year here at Style at a Certain Age when we reflect on the past year and highlight the best outfits of each month. The retrospective will carry us through the week, culminating in our (and your!) favorite Fridays with Oscar posts of the year. So, in the quiet week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, sit back, grab a warm beverage, and review the year with us! Today we are looking at The Best of 2023, January – April.

A Simple Style Formula that Works Every Time.
An easy outfit formula for winter is a sweater + denim + booties. Honestly, we don’t have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to a casual chic outfit. This time of year a sweater is a practical yet stylish solution to battle the elements.
And what can I say about a pair of jeans that hasn’t been said? They just work this time of year. But I do like a wide variety of denim from bootcut to cropped flares to simple straight-leg jeans in a dark rinse. This straight-leg pair from Ralph Lauren runs small, so size up one size. Some even suggested sizing up two. This happens with RL from time to time with no rhyme or reason. And it’s usually with denim. Go figure!

Though this color isn’t currently available in the Hampshire Ankle Pant style, I bet Talbots will bring it back soon. Pink is still such a hot color this year and will be in 2024 as well. While pink has always been my favorite color, The Barbie Movie sent pink into the stratosphere of popularity in 2023. The feelings of nostalgia and optimism that the color pink brings to our lives are undeniable and I think The Barbie Movie helped women of all ages tap into the power of pink!
If you look back through the 2023 archives on the blog, you will find a lot of bold pink ensembles. Several monochromatic pink looks, along with how to mix and match your pinks, like this ensemble from February.

The The Ivy Pant from J.McLaughlin became a SaaCA favorite in 2023. Both Kelly and I purchased a couple of pairs in different colors. These pants are a dream to wear! They’re pull-on, with just enough stretch. They hold you in without being too tight and they are a great weight for spring, summer, and fall. If you missed your chance last spring to snag a pair in this gorgeous light blue color, you can still find a great selection of colors and prints.

Since a teenager, I’ve preferred classic style above all other styles. There’s something steady and true about pieces that never go out of fashion. Trench coats, pencil skirts, denim jackets, white shirts, and a nautical vibe. The classics are simple at their best and are well-designed. They can also be dressed up or down because they are forever stylish.
Classic style speaks to me, but it also keeps me on my toes. The downside of classic style is that it can be stodgy and/or stale. Women of a certain age should always strive for a modern, fresh, and relevant look that doesn’t look as if we stepped out of the 1980s. I always ask, “How does a crewneck sweater go best with a blazer in 2023?” or “How can I style a pencil skirt with a leather moto jacket?” There’s nothing I love more than reinventing those classic pieces that are rooted in beauty but are practical and useful. If you love timeless classic style, you’re in good company.
