7 Staples I Love in My Summer Wardrobe Over 50

Why I Still Invest in My Summer Wardrobe Over 50

There’s a quiet myth floating around that after 50, your wardrobe should play it safe. Fewer colors, fewer risks, fewer reasons to indulge in something beautiful. But let’s set the record straight:

I’m 66, still living a full and vibrant life—and my summer wardrobe is coming with me.

Yes, I still invest in clothes. Not just any clothes, but timeless, well-made pieces that work with my body, my lifestyle, and the Georgia heat. I’m curating a summer wardrobe over 50 that brings me joy and structure—and gets me out the door in style.

There’s a common misconception that once you hit a certain age, your wardrobe should take a backseat—that stylish pieces are for someone else, some other time, some earlier version of you.

Somewhere along the way, society started whispering: “You don’t need that dress.”
“Why buy that jacket?”
“You’re not going anywhere fancy.”
“You’ve had your fashion moment.”

Well, I’m here to whisper something else—something louder, bolder, and far more true:
I’m still investing in clothes I love—because I’m still living a life I love.

Let’s talk about the seven summer staples that have earned their keep—and why I’ll continue investing in them year after year.

👠 Beth’s Tips: Summer Wardrobe Over 50

👗 Because Clothes Still Matter

I don’t buy clothes to impress anyone.
I buy them because:

  • I want to feel pulled together on a random Tuesday.
  • I still believe in the power of a crisp white blouse.
  • I know how a great blazer changes my posture and my attitude.

Yes, the mirror matters—but so does the mirror inside.

When I get dressed in the morning, it’s not for the compliments (although, hey, I’ll take them). It’s a signal to myself that I’m showing up with intention—whether I’m going to lunch, recording a YouTube video, walking Oscar, or writing my debut novel.

🧥 Because Style Isn’t Just for the Young

There’s this subtle message floating around that after a certain age, we’re supposed to fade into beige.
Stick to safe pieces.
Dial it all down.

Nope. Not doing it.

I’ll still wear leather.
I’ll still wear red.
I’ll still wear clothes that fit like they were made for me—because they were chosen by me.

Age doesn’t disqualify us from enjoying beauty, structure, or a little drama in a trench coat. It enhances it.

Eyelet Dress | Cork Block Heels | Gold Hoop Earrings | Similar Wicker Handbag

💰 Because Quality Matters Now More Than Ever

I’ve stopped chasing quantity and started curating. I’d rather have one perfect pair of white jeans than five that “almost” work.
I invest in:

  • Breathable, beautiful fabrics like cotton poplin, silk, and linen
  • Structured tailoring that flatters, not hides
  • Elevated basics that mix, match, and feel like me

Investing in your wardrobe at 66 doesn’t mean you’re frivolous. It means you know the difference between a fast-fashion thrill and a long-term love.

💃 Because Joy Is Ageless

If something makes me feel beautiful, why wouldn’t I wear it?
If something lifts my mood, fits my life, and makes me want to twirl around in my kitchen—why not?

Style after 50 isn’t about dressing for someone else’s idea of appropriate. It’s about dressing for yourself.

For me, that still means adding to my closet with care and joy.

☀️ 1. Summer Dress That Does It All

A sleeveless shirtdress, a tiered midi, or a wrap silhouette in high-quality fabric is summer’s MVP. It’s easy, breathable, and instantly polished.

Why I invest:
Because I can throw it on with sandals and a straw tote and feel elegant—even on a humid Georgia afternoon.

Ruched Stripe Dress | Madrid Buckle Sandals | Straw Tote | Sunglasses

☀️ 2. Lightweight Button-Up Shirt

Cotton voile, poplin, or linen—this shirt works hard. I wear it open over a tank, tied at the waist, or tucked into shorts or skirts.

Why I invest:
Because it’s breezy without being sloppy, and it adds instant polish to everything from denim to dresses.

Shirred Button Up | White Wide Leg Denim | Crystal Sandals | Initial Necklace

☀️ 3. Neutral Sandals

I look for block-heel slides, minimalist leather straps, or raffia accents in tan, bone, or metallic tones. Comfort matters, but style still leads the way.

Why I invest:
Because good sandals should support your feet and your outfit. A beautiful pair can elevate even the most casual ensemble.

Naturalizer Nara Slingbacks

☀️ 4. Straw Tote That Goes Beyond the Beach

Not floppy, not flimsy. I love a structured straw tote with leather or canvas trim, and room for my essentials (including lipstick, sunscreen, and a paperback).

Why I invest:
Because it’s functional and fabulous. Perfect for errands, markets, or a casual lunch date.

Seersucker Shirtdress | Gold Kitten Heel Thongs | Diamond Straw Tote | Gold Hoop Earrings

☀️ 5. Statement Sunglasses

Oversized frames, tortoiseshell details, or a hint of glam—sunglasses aren’t just protection, they’re punctuation.

Why I invest:
Because they hide a tired eye, block the sun, and deliver instant polish. Plus, they make every outfit look intentional.

Tortoise Shell Sunglasses

☀️ 6. White or Neutral Sneakers

Crisp, clean, and stylish—not your gym shoes. I love leather or canvas pairs that go with dresses, trousers, and even shorts.

Why I invest:
Because I’m not compromising on comfort—but I’m not compromising on style either. These work with nearly everything in my closet.

Striped Henley Tee | Linen Shorts | Web Belt | Canvas Tote | Mule Sneakers

☀️ 7. Flattering Midi Skirt

A-line, pleated, or wrap—midi skirts are my go-to for warm days when I want a little movement and a lot of elegance.

Why I invest:
Because they’re incredibly versatile. Add a tee and sneakers, or a blouse and heels—done and done.

Poplin Top | Poplin Skirt | Metallic Sandals | Leather Handbag

Closing Thoughts: A Summer Wardrobe Over 50 Is a Power Statement

A summer wardrobe over 50 isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about refining your look with intention. At 66, I know what I like, what fits, and what’s worth the splurge. Investing in your closet doesn’t mean you’re clinging to youth. It means you’re honoring the life you’re living right now—with all the grace, polish, and personality you’ve earned.

These seven pieces don’t scream look at me—they say I’m here, I’m ready, and I’m doing summer in style.

    Love this. Thank you!!!!

So glad it resonated—thank you for being here! 💛

  2. Lorna Gibson

    Dear Beth
So love all your posts, videos etc. You are so inspiring for women of a certain age!
Like you I still enjoy buying & wearing lovely new clothes. It does so much for your self esteem!
    Thank you
I am from the UK & have followed you for a number of years – like you I am single. Vitit Austin TX around 4 times a year & love the American brands!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much for this lovely note! Isn’t it true—there’s just something powerful about slipping into something that makes you feel good. Style really does lift the spirit. I’m so glad we’ve been on this journey together, even across the pond! Enjoy every visit to Austin (and every American brand find 😉). Sending hugs from Georgia to the UK! 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸

  3. Gayle Murphy

I really enjoy your blog. That said, there has been a change lately and how it works and to be frank it gets in the way. If I click on a link you provide, such as the one for the white sneaker mules, and then I go back to your blog, the system takes me back not to where I left off but rather to the very beginning and I need to scroll through all of what I have already read to get back to where I left off. This means that I will click almost never on links that you put in your blog. I’m sure this is a technical issue that your Tech gurus could fix.

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much for your thoughtful message and for being a loyal reader! I completely understand how that could feel frustrating. Just a quick note—links in the blog are actually set to open in a new tab, so your spot on the post should stay right where you left it. If that’s not happening, it might be a browser setting or device-specific issue. Either way, I appreciate you flagging it—and I’m so glad you’re here! 💛

Info on the very first, print dress, please!

That is a linen dress from J.McLaughlin from last year, but here is a link to this year’s choices: https://rstyle.me/+FsSuDF6ZiLQHgTV-AnD8Xg

  5. Sue

Enjoyed this post a bunch. I like all of them, but especially the looks & message intent of fewer but better. I’m 70 and cleaning out all my closets of ‘almost good looking /fitting/quality garments. Yeah! Your post came at the perfect time. 🤗

    1. Beth Djalali

I love hearing this! There’s something so freeing about letting go of the ‘almosts’ and making room for the absolutelys. Fewer but better is a mantra I live by—and it sounds like you’re right on track. Here’s to a closet (and life!) that truly fits. 🤍

  6. Cheryl W Clark

Truer words have never been spoken! Once again you nailed it. I’m 66, 5’8″, size 8 and buy classic pieces with a few trendy ones thrown in. Never skip on quality and know what looks good on you and what makes you feel good.

    Thanks so much!

    1. Beth Djalali

Yes to all of this! You clearly know your style—and that’s half the battle. Classic with a twist, quality over quantity, and always dressing for how you feel… that’s the sweet spot. So glad this post resonated! 💫

  7. Ann Ailsworth

Great post and such truth for us ladies over 60 (and even over 70!!).

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you! Isn’t it the truth? Style doesn’t have an expiration date—and neither do we. Here’s to embracing every season with confidence and a great outfit! 💃

  8. MaryLynne

Thank you for providing the answer to my husband’s question Why are you getting dressed up? We are only going ,fill in the blank. You won’t see anyone you know or nobody gets dressed up any more. At 83 I still want to look good no matter what other people are wearing. I don’t need any more clothes but sometimes I just have to have something you are wearing. I do try to get rid of something when I get something new. Thank you again for giving me permission

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh, I love this so much! At 83, you’re proving exactly what I always say—style is for you, not for the crowd. And yes, sometimes we do need that extra something, even if it’s just to twirl through the living room. I say keep dressing up, keep editing the closet, and keep showing the world that confidence never goes out of style. Tell your husband I said it’s a lifestyle, not a dress code. 😉

  9. Carol Hoag

Loved your thoughts! The Quince strapless dress is pure magic!

    1. Beth Djalali

Isn’t it though?! That Quince strapless dress is sorcery in fabric form. So glad you loved it—it’s a game-changer! ✨

  10. Jan Bengtson

I loved today’s post, Beth. I’m choosing to show up and be engaged in life daily. Getting dressed is part of the fun! Thanks, too, for sharing lifestyle choices to keep things fresh and interesting.
    Jan

    1. Beth Djalali

Jan, I love that mindset—showing up is half the battle, and doing it with style? Even better. Getting dressed should absolutely be part of the fun. Thanks for being here and for embracing the lifestyle right along with me! 💛

  11. Cindi Jones

Thanks for your message. At 81 years old I want to look my best and dress my best. I have a new husband who cares about what I wear to inspire me. Hair and makeup are still very important too.
    Blessings! Cindi

    1. Beth Djalali

Cindi, your message made my day! At 81 with a new husband and a zest for style—you’re absolutely glowing. I love that you still prioritize hair and makeup too. It’s proof that feeling beautiful never goes out of fashion. Blessings right back to you! 💕

  12. Susan

“because I’m still living a life I love!” Yes! A great pep talk for 67 y.o me…needed that!

    1. Beth Djalali

Yes to that, my friend! Just because the number changes doesn’t mean the joy does. Here’s to 67 and still living a life that lights you up—style, strength, and all the sparkle that comes with it. Keep going, keep glowing! 💪✨

  13. Marit

This is an inspiring message and one I needed to read. Thank you! Thank you also to all the ladies who commented so positively.

    1. Beth Djalali

That means the world—thank you! I’m so glad the message resonated with you. And yes, the community of women showing up with kindness and encouragement? Absolutely inspiring. We’re all in this together, lifting each other higher. 🤍

  14. Isa

Thank you Beth. So inspiring and so true!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you! I’m so glad it spoke to you. Here’s to embracing every season with grace, grit, and a little bit of glam. 💫

  15. Lorraine Turkel

Thank you for this! I spent years telling myself that I didn’t need that dress, blazer, outfit, pants, coat, shoes, boots or whatever. But after reading a few of your blogs I decided no more! Now I buy the shoes, the outfit, the dress & the coat and I am starting to love my closet again. I feel like I finally have appropriate things to wear when the occasion arises so I don’t have to ‘settle’ for what I can find or something I’m not crazy about. At 64 I’m learning what works for me now and I am worth it!

    1. Beth Djalali

Oh my goodness—this is everything. YES to embracing your style, loving your closet again, and saying goodbye to “making do.” You are worth it, and it’s never too late to curate a wardrobe that makes you feel confident, prepared, and utterly fabulous. I’m cheering you on every step of the way—and I have a feeling your closet is about to become your new happy place. 👏👠💃 #StyleAtAnyAge #NoMoreSettling

  16. Susy

“Still living a life I love” what a beautiful mantra! I know a few friends and family question why I always want to ‘dress with intention’ and this quote says it all. Thank you for helping me find the words.
I love reading your posts everyday.

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much—that means the world to me! “Dressing with intention” is such a powerful act of self-respect, and yes—still living a life I love is the perfect response to anyone who questions it. Keep showing up for yourself with style and purpose… because this season of life is just as worthy of celebration as any other. 💫 I’m so glad you’re here!

  17. Madeline Garcia

I’m often the overdressed one in the room. I don’t care, at 75 I still enjoy fashion and dressing up. Nice top co-ordinated jacket or sweater are fun to wear.

    1. Beth Djalali

Amen to that! Being the overdressed one just means you’re the one who showed up ready to celebrate life—and at 75, that’s a statement worth making. Fashion should always be fun, and it sounds like you’re doing it exactly right. Keep shining, keep styling, and never tone it down for anyone. 💃🧥✨

  18. Grandma judy

Love this post!!! My 7 would be a little different but the idea of investing in clothes that you Love and look good on you at any age is spot on. Thank you!!

    1. Beth Djalali

Thank you so much! That’s exactly the heart of it—your “7” should reflect you. Style isn’t one-size-fits-all, but the confidence that comes from wearing what you love? That’s universal. Here’s to investing in yourself at every age! 💕👗

  19. Susan

As Dorothy Parker once put it, “Where’s the man could ease the heart / Like a satin gown!” (“The Satin Dress”) I don’t wear much satin in the muggy Chicago heat, but my well-behaved linen collection eases my heart all summer long. In Germany we say, “Linen wrinkles nobly” — and wears like iron, while not often really needing one (hang and steam in the bathroom while you shower, and gently press any creases out with your hand: done!)

  20. Lady A

Love all the styles at 80, I dress the same way. I was taught when shopping to buy pieces that’ll go will Majestic at least 5 different outfits. I love it and the comfort of not having to be part of the trends, I make my own to look very different, than what everyone’s wearing. Thank you for sharing

  21. Deborah Clemons

I love your styles at a certain age – looking your best is for any age! Keep on rocking it!

  22. Mary mikota

Need ideas for semi casual wedding

  23. Maria Rodriguez

Loved the article, your enthusiasm, and positive outlook! Totally agree with you!

  24. Mari
