How to Wear Below Knee Skirts Without Looking Short

This fall, skirts are everywhere—from polished midis to flouncy chiffons—but the length I keep reaching for is below the knee. It’s timeless, elegant, and surprisingly petite-friendly when styled with the right proportions. That’s why I love a just-below-the-knee skirt—it strikes the perfect balance. Today, I’m sharing how to style this flattering length for fall in a way that feels modern, chic, and totally wearable.

Here’s What You’ll Find in This Post:

  • Proportion tips to make this length work for smaller frames
  • How to style skirts with sweaters, jackets, and accessories for fall
  • Easy ideas to take the look from casual to polished

The Petite Gwyneth Skirt

This just-below-the-knee skirt is a petite-friendly piece that adds movement without bulk. Its length hits at just the right spot, creating flow while keeping proportions in check. For petites, this length helps elongate the frame, especially when paired with shoes that show a bit of the ankle or have a slight lift.

I am wearing a Petite XS, and the fit is true to size. The skirt is lined, and the lining ends just before the flounce hem begins, allowing the swingy, romantic flounce to have maximum movement. Caring for a lined, chiffon flounce hem skirt is easy if you have a clothing steamer. Turn the skirt inside out to steam the lining first. Then, turn it right side out to steam the outside of the skirt.

Cashmere Shrunken Tee

A fitted sweater balances the fluidity of the skirt. For petites, it’s all about highlighting the waistline, which prevents the look from feeling boxy. Tuck it in fully or do a front tuck to define your shape. Or go for a cropped sweater as I have done with the J.Crew Cashmere Shrunken Tee. These sweaters are not sold in petite, so a cropped sweater on us smaller gals will hit right at our waist, naturally giving soft definition.

Metallic Accessories

The Handbag

Accessories pull the whole outfit together. Here, a structured handbag and woven flats bring polish without feeling fussy. A petite trick? Keep accessories proportional to your frame—a medium-sized bag works better than an oversized tote. My bag is a few years old, but this Croc-Embossed Gold Bag from Madewell is a great alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can petites wear below-the-knee skirts without heels?

A. Yes! Pair with ankle-baring flats or low block heels to keep proportions lengthening without needing high heels.

Q: What tops work best with this skirt length?

A. Fitted knits, cropped jackets, or tucked-in blouses all balance the volume of the skirt beautifully.

Q: How do I transition this skirt into cooler weather?

A. Add tights, ankle boots, and a cropped jacket to keep the silhouette flattering for petites.

Metallic Ballet Flats

The Shoes

Metallic woven flats give this outfit personality while keeping it comfortable, and are perfect for these still-warm days of September. For petites, shoes that show some foot (like flats, loafers, or ankle-baring styles) always help elongate the leg line.
