I get it. Say “leggings over 50” out loud, and you can practically hear the sharp intake of breath from the fashion police. Somewhere along the way, someone decided that leggings have an expiration date — that after a certain birthday, we should hang them up, stick to “real pants,” and quietly fade into a sea of khakis.

I’m calling nonsense on that. Loudly.

Yes, you can wear leggings. No, they don’t expire at 40, 50, 60, or—hi—67.
But styling them well? That’s where the magic happens.

Leggings aren’t the problem. Leggings styled without intention? That’s the problem. And there’s a big difference.

As someone who loves comfort but refuses to give up style, I’m here to show you how to make leggings look polished, modern, and very grown-woman fabulous.

So today we’re talking about how to wear leggings after 50 — the only rules that actually matter (spoiler: there are four), seven outfit formulas you can steal, and my honest recommendations for the leggings worth your money. Because style should evolve with you, not against you. And comfort? That’s not a compromise. It’s a right.

Welcome to Style at a Certain Age, where we age with grace, strength, and beauty—with a little grit and glam thrown in. And for a little more style inspiration, check out What to Wear to a Winter Wedding or The Best Winter Boots.

Let’s dive in.

The Only Legging Rules That Actually Matter

Notice I didn’t say “age-appropriate rules.” (Who made those rules anyway? What’s the cutoff — forty? Fifty? The moment you become a grandmother?) These are styling principles that make leggings look intentional rather than accidental. Big difference.

1. Cover Your Assets

Let’s just say it: your top should cover your backside. Not because there’s anything wrong with your backside — but because proportion is everything. A tunic, a long cardigan, an oversized sweater that hits mid-thigh, a blazer with some length… these create balance. A cropped tee with leggings can look unfinished at any age. This isn’t modesty. It’s math.

2. Fabric is Non-Negotiable

Thin, see-through leggings are a hard no. If I can tell what color underwear you’re wearing, those are not leggings — they’re tights pretending to be pants. Look for substantial fabrics: ponte, thick cotton blends, quality faux leather, performance fabrics with actual structure. The squat test is real, people. Use it.

3. Fit Like a Glove, Not a Sausage Casing

Leggings should fit like a second skin — but a comfortable second skin. Not so tight they create bulges where none exist. Not so loose they bag at the knees by noon. The waistband should stay where you put it. If you’re hiking them up every five minutes, those aren’t your leggings. Keep looking.

4. Shoes Make or Break It

The right shoes transform leggings from “I gave up” to “I meant to do that.” Ankle boots, loafers, pointed-toe flats, sleek sneakers, knee-high boots — all of these work beautifully. What doesn’t work? Your actual running shoes (unless you’re running). Flip-flops (unless you’re at the beach). Worn-out slides you’ve had since 2008. You get the idea.

Beth Style Tip: Shoes should whisper “style,” not shout “surrender.”

What Not to Do With Leggings

This isn’t judgment—just gentle guidance for elevating your look.

  • Sheer leggings as pants: The answer is always no.
  • Tops that are too short: Balance is key. Cover the assets, elongate the line.
  • Loud prints without structure: If the leggings are loud, the top should be quiet.
  • Bulky athletic shoes: They visually “weigh down” the outfit.
  • Oversized everything: Leggings + giant sweatshirt + heavy boots = “marshmallow chic.” Cute on the slopes; not so much at Target.

Beth Style Tip:
Leggings without intention look sloppy. Leggings with intention look expensive.

The Leggings Actually Worth Your Money

Not all leggings are created equal. Here’s where I put my money — and why:

For Everyday Black Leggings

Spanx, Commando, and Chico’s Zenergy are my holy trinity. Look for ponte or thick cotton-blend fabrics that actually compress. The fabric should be opaque, hold its shape wash after wash, and have a waistband that doesn’t roll down when you sit. (We’ve all been there. It’s not cute.)

Spanx Ponte Perfect Pant | Amazon Essentials Leggings | Chico’s Zenergy Leggings

For Faux Leather

Spanx invented this category, and theirs remains the gold standard. Smoothing, flattering, and they don’t make that embarrassing squeaky noise when you walk. Commando makes a beautiful version, too. Both are worth the investment.

Spanx Faux Leather Leggings | Commando Perfect Control Leggings

For Work-Appropriate Ponte

J.Jill, Banana Republic, and NYDJ all make ponte leggings that can pass for slim trousers. Look for styles with a flat front and no visible waistband — these are the leggings you can wear to meetings without anyone being the wiser.

J.Jill Ponte Leggings | Chico’s Juliet Leggings | Zenergy Leggings | Theory High Waist Leggings

For Petites

If you’re petite (like many of my readers), look for leggings specifically cut in petite lengths — otherwise you’ll have that awkward bunching at the ankle that makes everything look off. Athleta, Spanx, and Chico’s all offer petite sizing. An ankle-length style can also work beautifully and looks intentional rather than too long.

The Shoes That Work (And The Ones That Don’t)

I get asked about shoes constantly. Here’s the breakdown:

Ankle boots: My personal favorite. They create a clean line at the ankle and work with almost any top length. Low block heel or flat — both are perfect.

Knee-high boots: The most slimming option. One unbroken line from hip to toe. Flat riding boots or heeled — dealer’s choice.

Loafers: Instant polish. They dress up leggings immediately and look fantastic with blazers.

Pointed-toe flats: Elegant, comfortable, and the pointed toe elongates your leg. Win-win-win.

Sleek white sneakers: For casual days. Key word: sleek. Veja, Golden Goose, a clean Stan Smith. Not your actual gym shoes.

Beth Style Tip: The right shoe turns “comfortable” into “chic.” The wrong shoe turns “comfortable” into “gave up.” Choose wisely.

A Quick Word About Body Confidence

We are not dressing to disappear.
We are not hiding.
We are not apologizing for taking up space.

We are dressing with purpose.

And leggings—styled well—can absolutely be part of a polished, confident, grown-woman wardrobe.

Beth Style Tip:
The goal isn’t to look younger. It’s to look alive.

FAQ: How to Wear Leggings After 50

Can women over 50 still wear leggings?

Yes. Next question. (Kidding — sort of.) There’s no age limit on leggings. The key is choosing quality fabric, ensuring your top provides coverage, and wearing shoes with intention. When styled thoughtfully, leggings look chic at any age.

What tops look best with leggings after 50?

Choose tops that offer coverage and structure:

  • Tunic sweaters
  • Button-downs with a long cardigan
  • Blazers
  • Longer knit tops that hit mid-hip
Avoid ultra-short or clingy tops — they tend to throw the proportions off.

What type of leggings are most flattering for women over 50?

Look for:

  • Opaque fabric (no shine, no show-through)
  • Ponte knit or structured stretch
  • High-rise waist for smoothing
  • Ankle or full length for the cleanest line
Avoid very thin cotton leggings meant for loungewear.

How do I make leggings look more polished?

Add structure on top or at the shoe:

  • A blazer or tailored coat
  • Riding boots
  • Loafers or clean sneakers
  • A belt bag or crossbody for balance
These elevate leggings from casual to chic in seconds.

Should women over 50 wear leggings as pants?

Not on their own. Leggings work best as a base layer. Choose tops that offer coverage in the back and a little structure up top. It’s not about “rules” — it’s about creating flattering, intentional proportions.

Are black leggings the most flattering option?

Yes — black is universally slimming, visually elongating, and the easiest to style. Charcoal, brown, and navy are great alternatives if you want a softer look.

How do I wear leggings if I’m plus-size?

Same principles: quality fabric with compression, coverage on top, polished shoes. Spanx and Universal Standard make excellent plus-size options with smoothing technology. A long cardigan or tunic creates a beautiful silhouette on every body. This isn’t about hiding — it’s about proportion.

Can I wear leggings to travel?

Absolutely! Choose a thicker ponte fabric, add a tunic sweater or blazer, and finish with loafers or boots. You’ll look polished and stay comfortable from takeoff to landing.

How do I avoid looking frumpy in leggings?

Stick to this simple formula:
Structured top + quality leggings + intentional footwear
When in doubt, add a blazer or coat — structure is your best friend.

Closing Thoughts

Here’s what I want you to take away from this: leggings don’t have an expiration date. They don’t care how old you are. They don’t require a permission slip from the fashion police.

What they do require is intention. Coverage. Good fabric. The right shoes. A woman who knows that comfort and style can coexist — because they can, and they should.

So wear the leggings. Style them well. And don’t apologize for being comfortable.

Beth Style Tip: The goal isn’t to look younger. It’s to look like yourself — comfortable, confident, and very much present tense.

So tell me, Grit and Glam Club — which outfit formula are you trying first? Team blazer or team duster cardigan? And if you have a legging styling trick I didn’t mention, drop it in the comments. We’re all in this together.

As always, you look great in all of the leggings- I especially like the faux leather. I’ve never been a leggings girl but I have a dear friend (73) who wears them almost exclusively, and always looks great.

  2. Janka

Hello. Love the monochromatic look! Thank you for sharing.

  3. Mary Lemond

I have two pair of leggings I bought last year and have not had the nerve to wear. Thanks to this post I am going to try several of the outfits you have suggested. I’m exited!

    1. Erin C

What I love the most about the Leggings piece is 1. All the swap out ideas, 2. The where to wear ideas & 3. The ease of use with the links on all the suggestions. Thanks for offering such a great site, Beth. 🙂

  4. Pam

I like the look of the faux leather leggings. I may have to re-examine my thoughts on leggings again. Thanks for this informative post.

  5. Maggie

Beth, you look terrific in the spanx faux leather leggings! I also love the all black look it just adds a touch of sophistication !

  6. Ila

Thanks for the information. Always great to info!

  7. Debbie Brown

I liked the pointers on the leggings. I like the boots with them and the tennis shoes and then the actual way you could dress up or dress down that I totally agree. We need to cover our assets.!!

  8. Patty

I was just about to donate my black faux leather leggings (now that I’m 70!) but after reading your post I’m going to continue wearing them proudly. Thanks for all your inspiring tips!

  9. Cheryll Sampson

I have two pairs I ordered from Chico’s two years ago. I have worn the black ones several times, but I have seldom worn the muted paisley pair. You look great in all the styles you displayed. Thank you.

  10. Carolina Girl

Great post, Beth! I also really like Talbots leggings. They tend to be Spandex rich and come in petite lengths as well as regular.

  11. Kathleen Curran

Beth, you carried off all the looks, and, depending on the situation, they all looked elegant and “just right.” For myself, I loved the faux leather “cool girl” look, the at home cardigan and flats look, and I love the mineral colored Spanx at the end for a sporty look. I could see myself adapting those to me. But your basic point is well-taken: done well and with style and confidence, leggings are not only acceptable but practical and chic. thanks for all the ideas.

Cute legging outfit ideas. I like the Breton top from St James but I think the size chart is confusing. I usually wear a medium Is what you bought or did you size up to Large?

    1. Beth Djalali

I think we linked to a different St. James Breton Tee. Mine is heavy fabric and I’m wearing a size medium. Here is the link:

Thanks for sharing how you can style leggings and look well put together as well.

      2. Mona McAuley

        Dee,

Thanks for the pointers. I’ve been wearing leggings since 1998, no expiration. Yes, cover the assets. Denim can be confining when over the age of 70. Spanks and Talbots petites work for me. Loved the photo examples.

I’m on board with leggings. Thanks Beth for reminding us that they have no expiration. I live in a rural area and leggings are my daily friend. I agree that it’s all about how you style them and I love your style suggestions. I wear thicker ponte leggings for a more polished option when traveling. Thank for the shoe/boot style suggestions. I appreciate the reminders. I’m saving this post to refer back to when I need style ideas.

  15. Madge Wienke

I like SAACA because I am a similar age (I’m 68) and I like your style. I’m tall and I’ve lost weight, so if it looks good on you, it should look good on me too. I do wear leggings but usually around the house. My favorite leggings outfit is a pair of deep plum leggings, with a matching tunic long sleeve Henley top and a lighter plum duster cardigan. I wore this to the doctor the other day for steroid injections in my lower spine. My husband told me it looked sharp enough to wear out and about. (I asked.)

  16. Dottie Kinnaman

Thank you for this post! I needed a refresher on how to wear leggings. My personal preference is all black.

  17. Pam

My husband told me a few years ago, that he doesn’t consider leggings as pants. So I don’t wear them as much as I used to. But with the right length top I will still wear them. They q

  18. Arna

I wear leggings a lot of the time, working out, around the house, and spending time with our grandchildren. I have to be comfortable to move around with toddler boys and soon a baby girl. I workout daily so if I get up, put on my workout leggings, and go to my “exercise” room, I will workout. I love so many of your outfits here.

  19. Courtney Cammarano

I have the Spanx faux leather leggings and that first outfit you feature with them is 🤌🏼. I will be re-creating that post haste!

  20. Diane

I’m 74, have a pretty good figure, and an active life. I live in leggings and I’m so glad you wrote about them. I love Anne Taylor leggings for their weight and fit, and wear boots, flats, or my white leather sneakers- all options you suggested. I prefer longer tops to cover my assets completely. I will probably be buried in my leggings!!!

  21. AnnMarie

It’s so helpful to have solid ideas. You make it look simple. Thank you! I am definitely going to these options!

  22. Kristine

As an equestrian I wear breeches, riding tights, tall boots & a polo. A vest when it’s cold. I often stop at the grocery store after riding. However, I have tried leggings & feel undressed, exposed. Has anyone else experienced this feeling? Thanks, Kristine

    1. Jan

      Not if “assets” are covered.

  23. KSB22

Love the tips. Just lost 80lbs, so trying to find fashion for my new body.

  24. Beverly

What a great post, Beth!👍🏻 I am going to pull out my leggings from the back of my closet. Thank you so much!

  25. Cheryl Owens

    I am bookmarking this post!
So many great ideas and outfits. Love everything you’re wearing here.
Now, to lose that last 10 pounds so I’m not constantly pulling up my leggings (2026 resolution, here I come), and pull together outfits from my closet.
I have just about every piece you’re wearing…but never seem to be able to put them together in a stylish way.
This post is a wonderful template. Thank you!!!!
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas…looking forward to reading your posts in the new year, and beyond.

  26. Julie W

Thank you for the permission to wear leggings. I will now pull out all those sweaters and tops that were long out of the back of my closet and start styling!

  27. Gigi

Leggings also work great under knee length sweater dresses with a cute shoe. Sexy ankles!

  28. Doris Mitchell

Thank you Beth for this encouraging post. I am 70 years old and I love wearing leggings. I am a rectangle build and I never go anywhere with my assets showing. Long tunics, beautiful white blouse(or other colors), riding boots – all of these ideas are so comfortable. I want to be stylish and I get many compliments – I refuse to dress OLD!

  29. Melody

I would love to purchase a couple camel accessories but it unfortunately makes my skin tone redder.

  30. Marina Garner

This was great information. I appreciate the posting of examples!

    Thank you!

  31. Cindy Burnett

Thank you for all the suggestions! I burnt out on leggings and have been wearing mostly jeans. I’m ready for leggings again!! I’m going to try everything. And thanks for the shoe tips.

  32. E. Lucas

I’m also 66, 5 ft – 7 1/2.and plus. I will turn 67 on the 15th. I need a new look at my age. I’m fascinated about your suggestions on the leggings look. I plan to give it a try! Merry Christmas!

  33. Rhoda Clark

What a perfect post today. I have two pair of leggings that I absolutely love, I feel really good when I wear them, but need to get longer tops to make them look more appropriate. I have black riding boots with a flat sole and a brand new pair of Eastland loafers in black. Can’t wait to style these with my leggings. Thank you for a great post. I’m putting this in my permanent file, outstanding reference.

    Thank you

  34. Trish

Great article! I’ll borrow some ideas! Thank you!

  35. Belinda Taylor

I agree, cover your “assets “!

  36. Lynne Lister

Great post! I’m enjoying experimenting with new looks after a 35 pound and counting weight loss.

  37. Cynthia Gaus

    Love the leggings lesson

  38. Cathy

I’ve been afraid to wear my leggings out of the house. Thanks for all of these great tips and suggestions!

  39. Bridget

Thank you. Nice reading. I quite agree with your perspective. Learnt some new things.

  40. Hilary

Oh my goodness how you have helped me thank you so much, I have certainly learnt a lot from you , just like to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New year x

  41. Denise Neuss

I loved all the suggestions. My biggest issue is I am not able to afford the big ticket items you suggest. Perhaps, could you suggest a mid range of products as well. I get the spend it for a few items and have it longer. It will last. Quality vs quantity is a great rule. Not everyone can afford a cashmere sweater. Or spanx anything. That is my takeaway. Your concept is great. I look forward to more of your reads. Thanks for the over 60 ideas.

  42. Tonia Gold

Enjoyed the article and learned my leggings can live on without looking “not my age”. Thanks for the handy fashion tips and reminders.

  43. Ava

Wow. Amazing new ideas to wear leggings more often!

  44. Princess

Nice advice but who has all that money 💰

  45. Judy Laub

    Loved this post!

  46. Princess

Nice advice but who has all that money 💰
Nice jeans do just as well. Again 💰
Your body shape adds and detracts.
    Still excellent advice. 👌 TY

  47. Robin Evans

I appreciate the tips. Please enter me in the drawing. I learned most about shoe choice with leggings. Thank you.

  48. Sandra

I’m 5’3″,built like a teenage boy ((30,25,33). I have wanted a pair of faux leather pants forever but didn’t have the courage to wear them.Your article gave me the push to buy the Spanx version. Since they were on sale,it wouldn’t be a disaster if I lost my nerve if I decided they’re not for me. I have closets of sweaters, tunics, shirts, boots as you suggest,so I can recreate your looks; we shall see. Very interesting article!

  49. Lisa

This was very helpful, thank you! Not quite to 50, but I live in leggings and skirts all winter. I’m tall and have found making them myself is how to get them to fit properly. Love the Chelsea boots, and they even come in my size!

  50. Michele

I’m 56 years old and was laid off in Feb. I just started a new job in September. Business casual but men wear suits. I tried black leggings with a burgundy tunic and longer cardigan with ugg boots today. Was comfortable and confident training and got compliments. Think I will try my riding boots next time.

  51. Carolyn Tanner

Thanks for all the great tips on the best way to wear leggings. I don’t have any leggings, I thought I should not wear them at my age. But now with your tips on the different outfits to wear with them ,I’m going to get myself a few and try a few of your suggestions. Thanks again for great tips.

  52. Stephanie Doser

I really appreciate the leggings piece. I too laugh at thought of not wearing them because I am 60. Nobody’s the boss of me, particularly when I like the way they make me feel AND look!

  53. Suzette

So many options to wear leggings that I would not have thought of my self. Thank you for all the ideas and tips. I love the idea of the white shirt. I might try this with my favorite color purple.

  54. Leslie Mills

How wonderful to see an attractive woman whom I can relate to, wearing contemporary clothing I love! Thank you for your upbeat commentary, which made me feel welcome. I appreciate the advice regarding layering and shoes. You have a new follower.

  55. Ela Atkins

I love this article, because I am an older woman. It confirms for me the leggings are not just for the Young but an older woman can wear them too stylishly. And it confirms to me that it’s all and how you put it together. A lot of the tips in this article I have worn and felt confident in my choice. Also, it has given me some options I never thought about.

  56. Lisa

Someone just told me leggings are out. I was so disappointed because I hadn’t even gotten started with them. So now I’m encouraged that I haven’t missed the boat, especially with all of your wonderful pointers to achieve “the look!” Thank you 😊

  61. Kalena

I absolutely love my leggings!!! I have worn them since they first appeared, normally a heavy material that hugs my legs, I’m 77 years old and my skin is starting to lose elasticity. I have over 20 pair, mostly black. If they go out of style I will too. I will never give up my leggings!!!

  62. Shelly L

It’s incredible how many looks you can create with a few solid staples!! Thank you for sharing!!!

  63. Patti

I encourage women of any age to wear leggings. I’m 80 and still wear them. Following your suggestions should make women more comfortable trying them. BTW you look great in all tyour outfits.

  64. Kirsten

Great info. Beth!!! Simple, elegant, comfy. Great pictures of you with specific details. Thank you!

  65. Deborah

First time here! My 35 yr. old daughter sent me the link to this article. I’m always asking her advice about clothing and fashion: “Does this make me look too old? Is this too young? Does this work for me?” etc. I’m 65, 5’6.5″, generally size 4/small but proportioned a bit fuller in the bust, and often look for petite in tops (my height is in my legs). I have several pairs of leggings but haven’t had the courage to wear them. This article was very helpful for how to pair them for the right look. Now I just might. . . thank you! Signing up for your newsletter too!

  66. Janet

Well written informative piece with spot – on suggestions for making leggings an ongoing wardrobe staple. Thanks!

  67. Lyn Murphy

I have just pulled out all the leggings that I have not worn for years. Your recommended ways to wear them will give them another life. Thank you. I especially like your suggestion of the long coat

  68. Jo

I love leggings! For evenings a wear them with a plain black tunic (over bum) with a black and bold colour floaty / shiney light weight shirt which is even longer – preferably with an interesting collar or sleeve detail?

  69. Joni Fisher

Thank you for all the good tips, I’m 70 plus and still wear leggings, agree with your article.

  70. Holly Flatt

I loved your signature program on leggings.
I am also 66 and enjoy wearing leggings.you can wear them casual or dress them up depending on your top, blazer or sweater I wear knee high boots they make me feel taller. I enjoyed the detailed information you shared with us ( good quality material, not sliding down ect ) But most of all I liked the fact you reinforced the idea we can wear them at this age. Loved your pictures!

  71. Nayna

I am a curvy petite with tiny ankles and slim calves. I avoid leggings as I really struggle to get the balance right. Six months ago I bought a pair from The White Company, but I still haven’t worn them. I’m going to be brave and try these outfits with my ponte leggings. Thanks

    1. Karen

Thank You!!! There are times when I wanted to try again to wear leggings. When I was younger I got told they are out of style or I was stying wrong. Come to find out, I did it right all along. THANK YOU!!! I think maybe I will try them again.

I know I am in the minority here, but I think leggings only look good on certain people. (Beth, you are one of them!) For the most part, when I see women wearing leggings while doing errands, walking at the airport, or going out to lunch, these women usually look awful! Their rears are hanging out in a most unflattering way, and because the leggings fit so close to the legs & groin area, hips and upper bodies seem out of proportion. So I don’t ever wear leggings. I have found that pants made out of soft fabrics and breathable knits are flattering and comfortable for me.

Very understandable presentation. I really learned from it and I liked the styles you chose. I’m 4’9′ and 97 lbs. and I find it hard to find petite clothes that fit my height. Still too long! My tops all

I always enjoy reading your emails. I often see a new way to put together items already hanging in my closet or I see an item that I can buy to update not just one outfit but that works for several.
