spring stripes

who doesn’t like a good stripe now and then? especially when it’s dished up in a color that’s on trend this spring. ladies, yellow is big and bigger this year just like red was THE color to wear for fall. and i happen to like both red and yellow (actually, they look great paired together) so this girl is in luck.

many times i hear women claim that particular colors don’t look good on them. and they won’t wear it. period. yes, there are definitely colors that look better on our skin tone than others. but i am here to tell you to let go of some of your hard and fast rules about wearing color. rules are in place for structure and guidance but don’t let them paralyze you. look at Picasso. this genius studied all of the traditional rules in the context of painting and knew how to apply each one. then he stepped outside the box. wow! and the art world has never been the same. so feel free to experiment with color. have fun. nothing brightens my mood quite like wearing a bold color on a dreary day. this is fashion ladies, not brain surgery. it’s okay to color outside the lines.

today’s ootd is easy peasy as i paired this bold stripe sweater from Boden with my new sailor denim from Ann Taylor and called it a day. the sweater comes in yellow or blue. notice the flattering neckline and bell sleeves that add interesting details. and i love how the sleeves have stripes at the cuff. it’s always small details like these that set an item apart. ballet flats similar here add a casual vibe that’s perfect for a day chock full of errands. and guess what? this outfit is finished with three easy pieces. didn’t i tell you it was easy peasy?

Well since youโ€™re talking about throwing away fashion rules … I have a question.

I avoid ankle length pants and crops because I have thicker calves and ankles. Whatโ€™s your opinion on wearing those types of pants with that body type issue?

Appreciate your advice! And love all your posts!

gd~ I would encourage you to try a pair of ankle and crops! I think you will find them flattering ~ try Sloan pant by Banana Republic or their Avery. My calves are โ€œathleticโ€ and I LOVE the ankle length and crop. Pair with a mid heel if you can or even a flat but avoid anything with strap around ankle… you probably already know this. So, I say YES YOU CAN! โ˜บ๏ธ

    2. i always advise to try on every style. what can it hurt? when you stand in front of the dressing room mirror you always know if something looks good on you or not. go with your gut instinct it’s typically right.

I’m a big Boden fan. The neckline is very “Audrey” inspired–they almost always carry something with that neckline. Very nice. Cute look!

    1. everlane and boden are my two new favorite stores. boden has lot’s of color and pattern and everlane the subdued classics.

Beth, I love your advice about color!! I’ve been suffering from “color analysis paralysis”, as I’ve been told so many different “seasons”, “tones”, and “types”, I don’t actually know what to do when it comes to selecting clothing and makeup, etc… I like your words and the freedom you inspire to just wear what appeals to you at the moment!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for all of your great posts!!

    1. hi sheri! thanks so much for stopping by. i love how your phrased ‘analysis paralysis’! too cute. while having a ‘color’ analysis is a good thing it shouldn’t keep you in a box. and i always say if it doesn’t look good next to your face wear on the bottom or break up the color with a scarf. there’s always a solution.
