good morning! powerful storms blew through Georgia last night with rumbles of thunder and lightning lasting well into the wee hours of the morning. this Midwest girl loves a good old-fashioned thunderstorm as long as i’m tucked safely inside my home. driving in one is a whole other kettle of fish. the storm alerts are over for now. but severe weather always leaves a path of destruction in its wake, toppling trees and downing power lines. Mother Nature is always a force to contend with.
all is well at casa djalali. in fact, oscar had a friend stop by for a play date. pax was here for the afternoon. boy do those two have fun! since Easter is fast approaching, i dished up a Spinach and Leek quiche this week that would be perfect for Sunday brunch as well as a spin on the traditional Bloody Mary called the Red Snapper.
sailor pants and striped tee
ahoy, mates! guess who’s wearing stripes yet again? isn’t this orange and navy striped tee adorable? today’s ootd is definitely channeling sailors far and wide. last week i introduced a pair of flared jeans from Ralph Lauren. this week it’s a pair of wide-leg sailor jeans from Talbots. these jeans are considerably shorter than last week’s rendition, so the shoe choices are completely different. a pair of kitten heels look adorable with these sailor jeans, but i also tried white sneakers, and they looked terrific! the reviews stated the side zipper is problematic, and i agree. but i have a style hack that works! simply take a bar of soap and run it up and down the zipper for lubrication. petroleum jelly works too. give it a whirl if you like these jeans enough to make them your own.
remember the rule of proportions i’ve shared before? it’s in play again today with wide-leg jeans. long over lean or vice versa is the name of the game. today, the bottom is full and wide, so the top is structured, including the blazer (old, similar here) from Boden. if you use this simple rule, it doesn’t matter if you are 4’11’ or 5’11.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. Use nonstick spray or butter to grease your pan.
Arrange the pie crust into a quiche pan or 9 inch pie pan. Trim the edges if necessary.
Sprinkle cheddar cheese on the bottom of the crust.
Trim the green parts of the leek, as well as the roots. Spilt the leek lengthwise. Run under cold water, using your fingers to bend back the layers. Leeks are super dirty, so do a good job. Save half of the leek for something else (top a pizza! Throw in soup!) Use a sharp knife to chop one half of the leek, make the pieces about the size you would chop an onion. Sprinkle the chopped leek over the cheese.
Chop the spinach then spread over the leeks.
Sprinkle 1/4 cup fresh basil next.
Add the mushrooms.
Crumble the goat cheese using a fork. Sprinkle over the basil.
Use a serrated knife to halve most of the cherry tomatoes. Fit as many as you can on top of the quiche. I used maybe all but 10.
In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together 6 eggs, Almondmilk, salt, and pepper. Beat for about 1 minute, then pour over the quiche.
If your quiche pan separates, or if your quiche looks very full, make sure you place the dish on a baking sheet just in case it leaks or overflows.
Bake at 375 for 40-50 minutes, or until the top has started to brown and the quiche doesn't wiggle when you shake it.
Remove from the oven and let cool a few minutes before diving in. Garnish with fresh basil and enjoy!
anyone remember the phrase “real men don’t eat quiche?” when quiches were first introduced for some reason, at least in the States, they were relegated to a ladies luncheon. but my dad and mr. style loved to eat quiche. whenever they did; they always prefaced their meal “real men don’t eat quiche,” with a southern accent to boot, which was hysterical as mr. style had an accent in place from his years growing up in Teheran and Vienna, respectively.

I love this outfit. So nautical and “Americana”. You look fabulous in it. Visiting your blog each day is like opening a box of Godiva chocolates – there’s never a piece you don’t love. With your gorgeous self, outfits, home and critters, I am in Heaven. I pick up style tips and inspiration in every post. And you’ve expanded my confidence and joy in wearing shorter skirts and sleeveless tops again. (I’m 5 years older than you.) Most important of all, I can tuck tops in and wear belts, even though that makes it more obvious that my waist is not the slim one of my 40s. It’s you looking so darn good that won me over. Thank you. P.S. I adore quiche.
It has been a while since I’ve seen Pax and I did a literal double take when I saw the size of him! Even though we picked up our Bearded Collie puppy 9 weeks ago tomorrow and he’s doubled in size since then, so I have constant evidence in front of me for how fast they grow! He will almost triple from where he is now.
Loving that t-shirt! Will pass on the quiche, my motto is that eggs are for cakes, not eating in anything resembling their normal state. I’ve tried over the years and just can’t do it – and that includes a fresh crab frittata in Alaska where if anything would work, it would have been that! The cocktail on the other hand…
I really prefer stripes when I wear a tee shirt. I think they look better when worn alone and look more interesting under a jacket. I just don’t wear them much without a jacket though because I have less than perfect posture.
Oscar wins in the classy department but Pax wins the cutie 🥰 award. He has really grown.
I like the recipe but the ingredients aren’t what you use in the written instruction. I can make the conversion (frozen vs, bag /fresh spinach and what do you do with the mushrooms) but other less experienced or less confident cooks may have trouble. Can you correct this recipe in a future column?
Love the mr. Style story Beth sounds wonderful I can just imagine! And the quiche looks delicious and I have most of those things in the fridge already, who knew I was saving leeks for this!Yeah!
Happy weekend:)
That quiche looks really good. I bet it smelled good while it was baking. I’ll have to try it.
Pax is getting so big!! He’s almost the same size as Oscar!
You look wonderful. Love your choice for today. Pax certainly grew up! Beautiful dogs. I’ll try the quiche. I’ll use egg beaters, an egg substitute. Looks delicious.
don’t forget eggs are good for you yolks and all. not only does the yolk contain the bulk of the egg’s bio-available B12, but it also contains choline and supports the liver; pre-formed vitamin A, which is amazing for the skin; and biotin, which is critical for skin and hair health.
It is unusual for me not to like something featured, but the sailor type bluejeans are bad. The width adds 20 lbs. However I do love the rabbit dishes/plates.
i wrote a previous post touching on the subject of wide-leg pants and the reactions to it such as yours.
but, hey, i don’t wear outfits based on how slim i may or may not look. but 20 lbs? completely, disagree.

puppies grow as fast as weeds! isn’t it fun to mark their growth?
at least the cocktail looks appealing. boy, i would be sad if i couldn’t feast on a fresh crab frittata in Alaska… but i get it!

Love your outfit today. The Jean’s remind me of the ones from the early 1970’s. Enjoy your post very much.
Oscar is so handsome.
Have a great weekend.
thanks! i think the blues jeans are ‘all that’!
I love your shorter hair. You mentioned you were not pleased with it. But, I think it looks great!
i’m liking it better two weeks later. but that’s the way it always goes. thanks for the vote of confidence!
cute outfit. Oscar’s friend is handsome too. Hope the rest of your weekend is less stormy.
it looks like sunshine and blue skies for the short term.
Every day with your outfits is like going to a fashion show or a theater.
You give a lot of new ideas.
