Happy Wednesday, ladies. As the temperature begins to rise and flowers start to bloom, it's time to revamp your closet with fresh spring wardrobe essentials that will take your style to the next level. Today, I am sharing 5 Spring Fashion Tips to Banish the Frump. Honesty, if you’re a woman of a certain age you’ve heard the word “frumpy” bandied about frequently. And it can strike fear in our hearts because no one, and I mean no one, wants to hear that dreaded phrase “You look frumpy!”

Being a style content creator and having my photos and videos splashed across a myriad of social channels I often hear, “You look age appropriate (whatever that means)” or “You’re not age appropriate”; “You’re matronly” and “You look frumpy.” And I won’t even go into the many, many comments that my skirts and dresses are too short or even too long for that matter, I shouldn’t wear shorts or sleeveless tops, and never, ever “try too hard.”
Fashion is a tricky landscape, and it’s open for interpretation. But one thing I know is that if we’re armed with the right tools in our fashion toolbox we can step out the door each day feeling confident. And that’s what style is all about. So ask yourself these questions: are you tired of feeling like your wardrobe is holding you back? Do you feel frumpy and uninspired by your style? Or maybe you’re stuck in a style rut, and it's time for a change.
With these tips, you'll be able to go from frumpy to fabulous in no time. So, let's get started!
Layers can be tricky waters to navigate when you want to achieve a chic, frump-free look. This is when you want to reach for lightweight layers that are versatile and elevate your outfit rather than bulk up your look. Think of fitted or cropped denim jackets, linen blazers, and chic lady cardigans.
When it comes to adding a fun twist to your spring outfits, incorporating statement pieces that offer a pop of color is key. Whether you opt for a vibrant blouse, or a colorful handbag, these eye-catching items can instantly elevate your ensemble and infuse it with personality. Green is big this spring along with royal blue, apricot, dark cherry red, pastel blue, pale yellow and lilac. Explore different shades and patterns to find pieces that speak to your individual style and make a memorable impact.
Matching Separates are trending again this year and I love them for all their versatility. If you don’t like jumpsuits and rompers because they can pose a challenge to get in and out of, go for a matching set that creates the look of a jumpsuit or romper, but has the ease of separates. Whether worn together or separately, a matching set in a fun print and bold colors is the perfect colorful statement piece!
If there's one wardrobe staple that never goes out of style, it's classic denim. Denim jeans, jackets, and skirts are versatile pieces that can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. For an effortlessly chic look, pair your favorite denim item with a crisp white blouse or a simple graphic tee. Add some accessories like a statement belt or a delicate necklace to elevate the outfit while still maintaining a laid-back vibe. Whether running errands or meeting friends for brunch, classic denim will always have you looking put-together and stylish. I released a spring denim trend video that we will link above.
When it comes to completing your spring wardrobe essentials, finding the perfect pair of comfortable yet stylish footwear is essential. From trendy sneakers to classic loafers, the right shoes can tie your entire outfit together while keeping you comfortable all day long. Opt for versatile styles that can easily transition from day to night, whether you're out running errands or meeting friends for dinner. The key is to find shoes that not only look good but also feel good on your feet. Ballet flats, Mary Jane’s, and kitten heels, along with sneakers, are back in vogue, favoring comfort without compromising style. And look for shoes with buckles. They’re tres chic!
Bold statement jewelry is back in a big way. Here are just a few of my favorites.
Bold Chokers: Oversize chokers are among the most popular pieces of jewelry. Their shapes, sizes and colors catch the eye, making them true statement pieces. This year, the jewelry is made to be noticed from afar.
Sculptural Bracelets: Bracelets, which can be colored, gold or silver, are a must. You can wear them alone in maxi size or mix them with other colored ones for a bold, gypsy effect. And you can never go wrong with gold or silver bangles.
Chandelier Earrings: Chandelier earrings do not follow a minimalist style. They are bold and dangling, with oversized sizes that add a touch of glamor to any outfit.
Sculpture Rings: Rings are unique and artistic, often true pieces of art and design that add personality to the look. Julie Vos or Monica Vinader are affordable brands that I reach for time and again.
Brooches and Charms with Letters: Brooches and charms with letters of the alphabet are a fun way to personalize your jewelry and add a touch of originality to your style.

Thanks for this post, Beth! Everything looks fresh and springy, and I especially enjoyed the part about denim, since I wear mostly jeans — dressed up or down. Speaking of jeans, I hear that skinny jeans are totally out, out, out. (I wonder if the same is true for black leggings??)
Anyway, I’ve struggled with styling the new wider crop jeans (and other super-wide pants, no matter what the length). I feel like I need a whole new shoe wardrobe and shorter (crop) tops to make these pants work for me.
Don’t listen to negative comments. Jealousy is a terrible thing. I am 75 and I think that you are doing just fine.
LOVE your pops of color. Now that I have let my hair go natural, white, I feel I need more color.
Thanks for the inspiration.
I am saddened that people feel the need to criticize you. Yours is the first blog I started following when I discovered such things existed and your advice has been invaluable over the years. Yes, you might show some clothing that doesn’t fit my lifestyle or personal taste but that is what makes us different. However, sometimes that can encourage me to move out of my comfort zone which is no bad thing. Keep up your excellent work and ignore the negative Nellie’s!
I love your posts and your classic style!! I almost never take the time to comment,
but other people’s words astound me! It would never occur to me that your skirts are too long or too short; you always look fantastic! Age appropriate? Bah! Sometimes it’s not about age at all. I’m a 40-something teacher who loves to dress professionally! I aspire to look as confident and classy as you do!! Thanks so much for all the inspiration!!!
