It’s FINALLY cold here in Athens, and I’m all for it because it now actually fits the holiday season. But, I do know that sometimes when the temperatures drop and it gets dark outside WAY too early, the seasonal blues can be very real for some of us. That, combined with us females already being overwhelmed with all that the holidays require of us, it can start to feel like our sparkle might be dimming…
So this is where I come in. To remind you that treating yourself to a little something beautiful can be a small act of joy that reminds you of your worth. Simple beauty purchases can give you that boost to get off the couch and get out there amongst friends/family/coworkers to start enjoying this season. More celebrating and feeling fabulous, and less stress!

A new makeup or beauty product isn’t just a purchase; it’s a little boost of confidence and cheer to help your spirit when you look in the mirror.

Winter Beauty Essentials for Women Over 40

1. Smooth Skin Prep
Colleen Rothschild Glycolic Acid Peel Pads with Blue Agave, $75.
A smooth canvas is everything, especially when winter dryness tries to dull your glow. An exfoliant, designed for mature skin that helps soften fine lines, gets rid of flakiness, and boosts radiance before makeup ever touches your face, is a MUST. Look for something like these peel pads from Colleen Rothschild (my new skincare brand I’ve become loyal to) that contain hyaluronic acid for that healthy bounce that keeps foundation from settling, plus a blend of Glycolic and Lactic Acids for exfoliation.
2. A Skin-Loving Radiant Foundation
Jones Road What The Foundation, $46.
Full coverage? Not necessary. Radiant coverage? Absolutely. Choose a foundation that gives natural luminosity without emphasizing texture. Over 40, we want light-reflecting formulas that make skin look youthful and lifted — like you just came back from a winter weekend spa retreat.
I have found myself coming back to Jones Road’s interesting take on traditional foundation. It comes in a glass pot, and freaked me out right when I got it because it looked like oil and product had separated! But after reading through their description, this is totally normal, and you just have to mix it all up after it settles.

It offers light-medium coverage. It feels ultra-nourishing and blends seamlessly into your skin, making it look like its best version. My dry 47-year-old skin welcomes this wildly healthy-looking complexion it gives me – I can even skip moisturizer if I want to because it’s that hydrating!
So if you’re oily, this won’t be for you, I’m guessing. You will need to add SPF underneath.
You can definitely see a major difference in my glow factor after this was applied, right?! I’m wearing shade: Beige.
3. Brightening Eyeshadow Stick for Awake, Sparkly Eyes
Half Magic SparkleStik Eye Crayon, $25.
Swap dark, heavy, smoky eyes for something slightly lighter and shinier, like a bronze, champagne, or beige shimmer. These shades enhance depth without closing off the eye shape. A tiny bit smudged just in the center of the eyelid and in the corners near the tear ducts (where the wrinkles are NOT) makes your eyes appear more lifted and bright, and alive! I’m wearing shade “champagne snowflake,” here.

I did my regular neutral matte eyeshadows first, then this stick was my topper! It made the boring everyday eye look come to life. These sticks provide the ultimate sparkle that doesn’t run all over your face, as a lot of powdered sparkle shadows do. Annnnd I added fake lashes too, just FYI. I’m wearing Kiss the new naturals in style “pearl earring”, $13.
4. Flush of “Wind-Blown” Winter Cheeks
Makeup by Mario Soft Pop Plumping cream blush, $34.
That naturally rosy, just-came-inside-from-the-cold flush? We’re recreating it with a beautiful cream blush. I know I’ve oooh and ahhh’d over this Makeup by Mario formula previously, but I promise you, ladies, it’s like the only thing I want to wear on my cheeks right now. It makes my cheeks glow without a sparkly highlighter!
Mid-tone pinks, berries, or rose shades bring warmth and youthful color back to the face. Tap it high above the apples, slightly upward for a lifted effect, and even a little across the middle bridge of the nose. It will look like a subtle winter wonderland makeover that takes years off instantly. I mixed shades: Perfect Pink (as my base) and Berry Punch as a slightly deeper pop of color on the highest points of my cheeks.

5. The Ultimate Scene-Stealing Earrings
A New Day Floral Stone Earrings, $12.
Never underestimate the power of accessories right up near your face! A pair of statement shiny earrings catches the light and brings attention right to your stunning features. They’re like built-in holiday mood boosters that frame your face beautifully in every selfie and family photo. There are so many fabulous costume jewelry options that you don’t have to spend even over $15 on a pair! You can see a bunch of these other sparkle choices here on my LTK post – and be sure you’re following me in the app if you aren’t already!
6. A Statement Sparkle Lip To Smile About!
Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Lip Luminizer, in “fuschia flex,” $22.
Whether you love a berry bold or a classic holiday red, a standout lip instantly puts the spotlight on you. Opt for glossy, sparkle finishes if you really want to stand out — they flatter mature lips beautifully and won’t dry you out like matte formulas can this time of year.
This shade by Fenty is so very pretty and sparkly in person and gives the lips their mistletoe moment! I did line my lips first with the Makeup by Mario lip liner that has the lip brush on the end included – love that for blurring – in shade “rich mauve.”

The Rest of My Look Details
Fun + whimsy holiday press-on nails are a must! I love buying my affordable press-ons and doing them myself – but they look like I paid a professional nail artist to do them! I’m wearing the Impress nails in style: Be Merry here, $10 // My cozy Alpine sweater from Target, $30, is so very soft, and I love dressing it up with my white jeggings, $45, and cute but warm Sorel duck boots, $140. Feels very “Snow Queen-ish”! // My Amazon bucket bag, $35, is quite literally the perfect size ( not too small or too large) and has a removable strap! // Always wearing similar stackable rings from Bauble Bar.
