Spring body care (which I covered in April) was about the reset after winter: the dry brushing, the first exfoliation, getting skin to a baseline worth working from. Summer body care is the maintenance and the upgrade: keeping the momentum going through heat and humidity, adjusting the routine for the season’s specific conditions, and adding the SPF layer that the body consistently doesn’t get but needs as urgently as the face does. These six products are the summer-specific additions that complement the spring foundation — all new, all appropriate to what the season actually demands.

What Changes in Body Care as Summer Arrives

The sweat factor changes everything. Summer body care happens in conditions the spring routine doesn’t account for: sweat, heat, chlorine, salt water, and the general environmental load of outdoor living. Products that worked in April need to hold up in August — which means lighter textures that absorb before they’re sweated off, SPF formulas that survive actual outdoor activity, and exfoliants that handle the buildup that warm-weather living creates.

The SPF gap on body skin is real. Most women apply SPF carefully to the face and ignore the arms, legs, chest, and shoulders — the areas most exposed in summer and the areas where sun damage accumulates most visibly over years. Body SPF is not a luxury consideration. It’s the most significant sun protection gap in most skin care routines, and summer is when closing it matters most.

Hydration needs to be lighter, not less. The rich body oils and thick lotions of spring maintenance feel heavy and uncomfortable in summer heat. The summer body hydration formula is lighter in texture, faster-absorbing, and often more targeted — an after-sun treatment, a lightweight lotion that goes on quickly and doesn’t require waiting to dress.

6 Summer Body Care Products I’m Loving

First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA in a lavender tube designed to exfoliate rough texture and smooth keratosis pilaris-prone skin.

1. The Exfoliating Body Wash That Replaces the Extra Step

First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA

Keratosis pilaris — the rough, bumpy texture on the backs of arms and thighs that most women have to some degree — becomes more visible in summer when bare arms and bare legs are the default. The First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser addresses it directly with a 10% AHA (lactic acid) body scrub that chemically exfoliates while physically buffing, which is the combination that actually works on KP rather than the physical-only scrubs that address the surface without the underlying texture issue. Use it two to three times a week in place of regular body wash on the affected areas, allow it to sit for a minute before rinsing, and within two to three weeks the texture is measurably smoother. For the legs and arms that summer demands be bare, this is the exfoliant that addresses the thing most women quietly wish they could fix.

The summer case: KP tends to improve in summer naturally (UV exposure, humidity) but the improvement accelerates dramatically with consistent AHA exfoliation. Summer is the season with the most motivation and the most visible payoff from this specific product.

2. The Body Serum That Treats While It Hydrates

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream

The Bum Bum Cream has one of the most devoted followings in body care for reasons that become immediately apparent in the first application: the texture is somewhere between a cream and a gel, it absorbs in under two minutes, it smells like a luxury vacation, and the skin it’s applied to genuinely looks and feels different within days — firmer-looking, smoother, more luminous. The guaraná extract (a natural caffeine derivative) stimulates circulation and temporarily tightens; the cupuaçu butter and açaí oil provide deep, lasting hydration without any heaviness. For thighs, hips, stomach, and anywhere skin has lost some of the elasticity and smoothness of younger years — this is the summer body product that provides a visible improvement quickly enough to be motivating.

The summer case: The light, fast-absorbing texture is specifically appropriate for summer — it hydrates without the heaviness that richer formulas produce in heat, and the scent (pistachio and salted caramel, distinctly tropical) reads as exactly right for the season.

3. The After-Sun Treatment That Belongs in the Beach Bag

Vacation After Sun Gel Moisturizer

After-sun treatment is the body care step that most people skip entirely because they only think about it when they actually have sun damage — at which point the motivation to address it is high but the product isn’t on hand. The Vacation After Sun Gel Moisturizer is the product worth having before the sun exposure happens, not after. The aloe vera base provides the immediate soothing and cooling that sun-stressed skin needs; the niacinamide and peptide complex addresses the oxidative damage from UV exposure at the cellular level; and the lightweight gel texture absorbs immediately without the sticky residue that most after-sun products leave on the skin. Apply it at the end of every outdoor day — not just the ones that resulted in obvious color — and the cumulative effect on skin quality through the full summer is significant.

The summer case: This is the product that makes the end of a summer day feel like self-care rather than damage control. Apply over the entire body after a shower, immediately while skin is still slightly damp, and the gel absorbs in under three minutes. The Vacation brand’s specific formulation has the playful retro packaging that makes it the most attractive product on the summer bathroom shelf.

4. The Lightweight Body Lotion for Hot Days

CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream

The CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream applies the same logic as the face’s ceramide barrier routine to the body — three essential ceramides to rebuild barrier function, plus salicylic acid (SA) to gently exfoliate and smooth rough texture as the moisturizer absorbs. The texture is the detail that makes it summer-appropriate: it feels like a lotion rather than a cream, absorbs quickly without residue, and doesn’t require waiting before dressing. For the legs and arms that need both hydration and ongoing texture refinement throughout the summer — not the intensive bi-weekly treatment of a scrub but the daily maintenance that keeps the work from the KP Bump Eraser from requiring constant repetition — this is the everyday lotion worth using. Fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested, and available at every drugstore at a price that makes daily all-over body application entirely achievable.

The summer case: Light enough to use in heat without discomfort, effective enough to show visible smoothing after consistent use, accessible enough to never run out — this is the summer body lotion that solves the “what do I use every day” question simply and well.

5. The Body SPF That Actually Gets Worn

EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47 Body Sunscreen

The body SPF problem is not a product problem — it’s an application experience problem. Most body sunscreens are thick, greasy, slow to absorb, and leave a residue that transfers to clothing and feels uncomfortable in heat. The EltaMD UV Pure addresses all of these simultaneously: a mineral formula with 100% zinc oxide that goes on light, absorbs in under two minutes without residue, and wears comfortably through outdoor activity, sweat, and heat in a way that most mineral body SPF formulas don’t. The broad-spectrum SPF 47 is meaningful protection at a reliable application. Apply to the arms, legs, chest, and shoulders — all of the bare skin that summer exposes — after body lotion has absorbed, before leaving the house. Reapply after two hours of sun exposure or after swimming.

The summer case: EltaMD at the face level (covered in the SPF makeup post) and EltaMD at the body level creates a cohesive, consistent sun protection system that doesn’t require thinking about which brand is appropriate where. The same quality, the same philosophy, scaled to the full body.

6. The Hand and Décolletage Treatment That Summer Specifically Needs

Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment Cream

The hands and the décolletage are the two areas where sun damage accumulates most visibly over decades — and the two areas most consistently underprotected in a typical sun care routine. The Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment is the summer-specific product for both: a moisturizer formulated with shea butter and plant extracts that provides meaningful daily protection for the hands alongside conditioning treatment for nails and cuticles. Keep a tube by the kitchen sink and one in your bag.

The Summer Body Care Routine in Order

In the shower, 2-3x per week: First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser on arms and legs (leave for 60 seconds, rinse). Regular cleansing elsewhere.

After the shower, on damp skin, daily: CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream on legs and arms. Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream on thighs, hips, stomach, anywhere that benefits from the extra treatment.

After lotions have absorbed, before leaving the house: EltaMD UV Pure Body SPF 47 on all exposed skin — arms, legs, chest, shoulders. Clarins Hand Treatment with SPF 15 on hands and décolletage.

At the end of every outdoor day: Vacation After Sun Gel on the full body after showering, while skin is still slightly damp.

The time investment: The full routine takes approximately eight minutes on application days. The daily version (lotion, SPF) takes under five minutes. The summer body care routine that actually gets done is the one that fits within the time a real morning has available.

Mini FAQ

Is the KP Bump Eraser safe to use year-round?

Yes — but the summer application may produce slightly faster results because UV exposure (carefully managed with SPF) naturally suppresses keratosis pilaris, and the combination of the AHA exfoliant and controlled sun exposure is more effective than either alone. Don’t use it immediately before sun exposure — apply it at least an hour beforehand or in the evening, and always follow with SPF.

Can I use the Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream on my face?

It’s not formulated for facial use — the fragrance level and the concentration of active ingredients are calibrated for body skin rather than the more sensitive and thinner facial skin. Use it from the neck down.

How often should I apply body SPF?

Every day that any skin will be exposed to sun, including through a car window. Reapply every two hours during extended outdoor exposure, and immediately after swimming or significant sweating. The EltaMD formula is water-resistant but not waterproof — reapply after toweling off.

Can I layer the after-sun gel over the body lotion?

Yes — apply the after-sun gel as the final step after showering, over any other body products that have already absorbed. The gel texture sits lightly on top without disrupting what’s underneath.

✨ Beth’s Take: The Summer Routine That Finally Included My Body

For most of my life, “skincare” meant the face. Everything below the neck was body lotion when I remembered it and SPF on the face when the sun was serious. The body was the afterthought in a routine that was otherwise fairly considered — and summer is when that gap was most visible, literally.

The KP Bump Eraser was the product that made me pay attention. I had accepted the rough texture on the backs of my arms as simply how my skin was — not something to address, just something to work around by choosing sleeves when I cared about it. The AHA formula changed that within two weeks in a way that physical scrubs had never managed, and the change made me understand that body skin responds to active ingredients the same way facial skin does. It just never gets them.

The body SPF followed from the same logic: if I was applying SPF every morning to my face because UV damage is cumulative and preventable, the same argument applied to the arms and chest and hands where the sun was landing just as consistently. The EltaMD formula is the one that made the habit achievable — light enough to not be a deterrent, effective enough to be worth doing. The hands specifically, with the Clarins SPF cream applied every time I wash them, are the detail I notice most going into fall when the difference in how protected skin looks versus unprotected skin is visible.

Closing Thoughts

Build Your Summer Body Care Routine

The KP exfoliant for texture, the Bum Bum Cream for targeted hydration and firmness, the after-sun gel for recovery, the lightweight lotion for daily maintenance, the body SPF for the protection gap that most routines have, and the SPF hand cream that makes daily sun protection automatic. Six products, eight minutes on the full days, five minutes on the regular ones. The summer body care routine that actually happens — consistently, without requiring heroic amounts of time or intention — is the one worth building.
