The big joke around this time of year is, “It feels like it’s January 87th!” Why does January feel like it just drags on and on?? If you’re reading this on the day it’s published, January 31st, I will officially be 48 years old, and one day old!

Woman with highlighted brown hair holding Furbish Studio needlepoint pillow reading "At This Age, I'm Not Meant To Live An Uncomfortable Life" in blue with pink floral border, wearing leopard print sweater with green trim, gold hoop earrings, layered gold necklaces, berry lipstick, and royal blue nail polish

I took a little trip down memory lane to see what was popular the year I was born, and here’s a few fun stats of popular culture things from 1978…

  • #1 Movie – “Grease”
  • #1 Hit Song – “Shadow Dancing” by Andy Gibb and “Night Fever” by the BeeGees
  • #1 TV Show – Laverne + Shirley
  • Biggest Makeup Trend – Disco Fever makeup. Lots of lashes, bronzed skin, super glossy lips and frosted eye shadow that could be seen bouncing off the disco balls!
  • A gallon of milk costs anywhere from .91 to $1.29 ( what a deal!)
  • The Dallas Cowboys won the SuperBowl and the New York Yankees won the World Series

The pic below is of me as a baby with my parents. I just LOVE old pics of my mom, who I thought was so glamorous, and my dad who was super cool! Their style was just the best in the 70’s.

I remember not really appreciating my January birthday as a child/teenager because I could never have a pool party like my friends who had summer birthdays! Ha! The things we remember. Speaking of, this month has actually been unusually cold – we even had an ice storm right here in Athens, Georgia!

Needless to say, this kind of weather has kept us being very “indoorsy,” and even the schools have been closed for a couple of days. Which I didn’t hate, because my college son came home and stayed with us due to the impending ice storm. So I had my whole family under one roof for two days, where we all just relaxed because we couldn’t get on the roads, which made me really happy 🙂

So as we say goodbye to January, let’s get into what beauty + lifestyle products I’m deeming “Pretty Powerful” for the month. I definitely have had some standouts that I feel the need to share with you all! So here they are in no particular order…

January Beauty Favorites

Essential Oil Diffuser with 6 oil variety set, $25. I have switched from lighting candles in my home office to using this oil diffuser, and I love the change! The benefits of using an oil diffuser are to help promote relaxation and ease anxiety, which I can get behind because I do feel like I’m in a day spa when I start mine up! It’s an inexpensive way to make your home/space feel more cozy this winter. I’m partial to the lavender and tea tree scents.

L’Oreal Le Lumi Liquid blush, $15. I first shared this blush in this post, Stop Overcomplicating Your Makeup Routine and it’s just one of the best formulas y’all. It blends out like a dream, I love the large foam applicator, and the finish in the shade “glowy true rose” is the prettiest rosey shimmer. That means you don’t need a separate highlighter because it has just enough understated glow to it! Seriously a great mature skin blush formula at a great price.

Aerie leopard print luxe crew sweater, on sale, $25. I cannot get enough of anything animal print, and this recent oversized sweater has become a closet go-to. I’m wearing a small and it’s really roomy. A lot of great sweaters are going on sale now so it’s best to go ahead and take advantage – here’s a similar one with red trim here, $29! Also dying to get these leopard barrel jeans from Free People, $128, too!

Untippable Nail Polish Holder, $16. I got this for Christmas from my husband, believe it or not, and I immediately thought, “hmm, useless.” But I was dead wrong! This thing is so innovative! It’s like having your own personal assistant tipping the polish for you or holding it upright, with a gripper that holds it in place on a smooth surface, and it holds any polish bottle! I usually wear Kiss/Impress press-ons, $11, but have been giving my nails a break over the month. Currently wearing an Essie super royal blue polish and love it on my short nails.

Amazon Mini Bucket Handbag, $35. I have owned this bag for about 6 months now, and I get so many compliments whenever I carry it. I find it to be the absolute perfect size for me right now too – not huge and bulky, not too tiny, but holds just enough! And it’s got the crossbody strap option and each has a silky scarf added to the handle. If you’ve been on the search for a “just the right size” handbag, I highly recommend this one. Mine is the beige shade.

Cerave Intensive Moisturizing Lotion, $20. With all this wacky really cold weather we’ve been getting, this new formula of CeraVe body lotion has been my skin savior. It’s fragrance free, non greasy, rich and hydrating. And doesn’t conflict with my favorite perfumes I like to wear.

“At This Age I’m Not Meant To Live An Uncomfortable Life,” Furbish pillow, $98. I hope everyone has something in their home that makes them smile when they look at it! This pillow is that for me. I love the chic needlepoint vibe, and the saying is just too funny AND true! If you’ve never checked out the Furbish Studio website to see what other funny and quirky pillows they offer, you should. I bet you’ll find just the perfect pillow that spruces up your couch, bed, or favorite chair.

Speaking of birthdays, does anyone else have a winter birthday? I’d love to know, and what year you were born in! I’ve come a long way from the kid who was bummed to be cold on her birthday. Now I just invest in really fancy/unique coats to bundle up in and relish that I am lucky + blessed to start a brand new year on this earth being another year older, wiser, and more confident in who I am. Cheers to more birthdays!

  6. Susy

Happy Birthday Jennifer! It’s fun to look at what was happening the year you were born – it brought back memories for me – I was 20 in 1978, and disco ruled. I was an oddball – just give me that old time rock and role. Fun post.

    1. Jennifer

I’m with you Susy – I love a bit of nostalgia! Wouldn’t you say oddballs have more fun?!! Ha! Being 20-something in the 70’s had to have been an absolute blast! I’m jealous 🙂

  7. Celine Stanasolovich

Happy Birthday Jennifer! I too have a January birthday. I turned 67 on the 21st. As a child, I hated having a January birthday. I had a party in 3rd grade and only 3 girls came – they could walk. Weather is usually terrible. As I have gotten older, I don’t mind it. Grateful to get another spin around the sun 🌞

    1. Jennifer

I figured I wouldn’t be alone remembering being a disgruntled youth with a January cold birthday! tee hee!! I’m glad we’ve switched out mindset though about our birthdays Celine and have learned to just embrace it, right?! Grateful for another spin around the sun is correct – happy belated birthday to you and thanks for being here with us on SAACA!

  8. Sue

Hi Jennifer, I’m a January birthday gal like you. I hit 74 last week. What I hated growing up as a kid was that there were no new clothes to ask for as birthday gifts. Way back then, Spring fashions didn’t hit the stores until much more into the season. I usually had to settle for more winter clothing. Of course living in a midwestern state it’s not likely that I would be wearing anything Spring in January anyway!

    1. Jennifer Duvall

Happy 74th Sue! I can def see that as being an issue with the changing of the seasons and how new clothes weren’t released as early as the do now – I just saw swimsuits out in my local Target!!

  9. Jill

My birthday is January 22. I turned 58 this year. Having a January birthday makes this Long- Long month more bearable. Happy Birthday to you.

    1. Jennifer

we are exactly 10 years apart in age Jill! happy belated bday to you and I agree, looking forward to celebrating our day of birth does keep January a bit more joyous!

  10. Mary

You mentioned your favourite perfume, what is the name please?

    1. jennifer

Hello Mary! right now my perfume obsession is with the Kayali Vanilla 28 – I love all things vanilla and this one is exquisite

  11. Frances K

Happy Birthday Jennifer from a fellow Aquarian. Today I celebrated my 73rd birthday. The sweet pic of you & your folks brought back memories of 1978 & all the fun I had as a young gal enjoying disco, a trip to Studio 54 & living on my own. Thanks for all your recommendations & great beauty advice & cheers to both of us! 🥂

    1. Jennifer

Happy belated bday my fellow Aquarian – I love our sign! And OMG you got to experience Studio 54?!! What a cool memory I’m sure – and I am so glad you’re here and that I’ve provided you w some good beauty recommendations. Cheers to 2026 being our year Frances!!

  12. Brenda Mowbray

Happy Birthday. Hope you have a super year. I also have the Amazon bucket bag and love it. What are your favourite perfumes?

    1. Jennifer

isn’t the bucket bag grand?!! my current go to fragrances are : Kayali Vanilla 28, Thierry Mugler Angel, and Ellis Brooklyn Super Amber

  13. Cheryl Owens

Happy Birthday! Hope it’s the start of an amazing year for you.
Always love your Saturday posts..I may not wear as much makeup anymore ( I turn 74 this May), but you always have great advice. Thank you.
One bit of advice I remember from when I turned 50 ( was it really 24 years ago?) was to look at what you wanted to do/to be when you were 21. And if you still hadn’t done it yet, to start now. Words to live by for the next decade or so.

    1. Jennifer

I absolutely love this advice – there’s no time like the present to get started on that dream!! thank you for this reminder and I do appreciate you being here and taking time to read my posts and engage in the comment section Cheryl! it keeps me going honestly.

  14. Sylvia Espinoza

Happy Birthday, Jennifer! 🥳 You make 48 look so good! Love the picture of you and your parents, as am in the same age range. Seems like 1978 was just yesterday. Life has bloomed beautiful adult children in our garden of life! Enjoy your birthday season as you speed to the big 5-0 in less than two years now. Hugs! 💕

    1. Jennifer

You are so kind Sylvia! I will gladly welcome 50 when it gets here – my hubby turns 50 this June so I’m letting him go first…Ha!! my oldest turns 20 next month and I feel like I’m slowly entering that adult children phase and I welcome it – seeing them bloom (garden of life get it??) is the best thing ever!

  15. Nancy B.

    Happy belated birthday, Jen!
I’m a New Year’s Eve baby of 1960. I actually enjoyed my birthday growing up because it was always school vacation time! As an adult it’s been trickier due to trying to get reservations to a restaurant to celebrate. Usually end up going to lunch instead! Loved those 70’s fashions! Halston and Diane Von Furstenburg were my favorites. I couldn’t afford them but I drooled over them in Vogue!🤪

    1. Jennifer

happy belated bday Nancy – what a COOL birthday to be a new years eve baby!!! my best friend actually took me to a fancy lunch on my bday this year bc we knew a nightime reservation could be difficult (with our 5 kids schedules between us too!). and it was glorious! we celebrated with mimosas at noon!

  16. Marlette van der Merwe

Hi Jennifer! I love your posts and photos. Happy birthday – I am an Aquarian like you! Where I live in South Africa, not all the cosmetic brands you use are available, but I have added some products from Essence – a brand I used to turn my nose up at – to my collection! Also, I have an animal print winter top from Woolworths that I was going to bin because of its bland beige ribbing. After seeing your top with green ribbing, I am going to be a copy cat and replace the beige with green. It is just too quirky to ignore!

    1. Jennifer

Marlette – you have the coolest name!! I appreciate you bringing this to my attention about the brands that might not be available in your neck of the woods – I should do some more research on that! But Essence is a very good line, so affordable, and kind of a sleeper brand that doesn’t get enough attention in my opinion. and how fun that you are going to give new life to your sweater thanks to my inspiration!! Go for it!!
