Who needs a syringe when you’ve got a good lip liner and a few sneaky tricks up your sleeve?? Today, we are talking specifically about our LIPS with my Best Tips for Aging Lips! And yes, if you’re over 40, they might be starting to disappear… it happens. I don’t know where they go, but they certainly start to thin out!

Despite this disappearing act, I want to share with you some of my personal clever hacks and products that will give mature pouts a more plump, pillowy look—minus the drama and the doctor’s bill. If you love wearing lipstick or lip gloss, and you talk or smile a lot, those lips are front and center and should be cared for like the rest of your face! Sadly, they usually get ignored by most women.

Best Tips for Aging Lips: Lip Care
So let’s talk about LIP CARE first. Make it a part of your getting ready for bed routine, which is a great time to heal and hydrate while you’re sleeping.

After you brush your teeth, exfoliate your lips. Why bother doing this? Because this will help to boost the circulation in those lips, and light exfoliation will help slough off the dead skin cells that give your lips a flaky and unattractive, dried-out appearance.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret I use. It’s this Mesolyft Lips, $59. It has this 0.15mm microneedling roller that delivers ingredients like mango butter, soybean serum, and silicone to plump and condition as you roll, leaving a soft, silky finish. Roll it back and forth to stimulate and achieve noticeably more hydrated and plump lips after consistent use! Does it hurt? No, but you want to feel the roller getting in there so it can do its job.

Also, by doing this consistently, your lipstick and glosses will apply, perform, and look so much better and smoother!
If this product intimidates you, there are other gentle exfoliant products like this highly rated lip scrub by Sephora, $7, or the Tatcha Kissu Lip Scrub, $28. OR just grab an old toothbrush (that you’ll use exclusively for this) and old school favorite vaseline, $8, and scrub over the lips and even the perimeter of them.
Now that you’ve got a smooth surface to work with, let’s show you how to achieve fuller, healthier-looking lips with MAKEUP TRICKS.
Step 1 (Optional): Contouring Your Lips
Lip contouring is a very “extra” step, but if you’re really willing to put in the work, it can definitely amp up the illusion of volume around your lips.

And I would suggest that if you’re going to try it, do it before everything else I’m about to share. Grab a cool-toned contour or bronzer product. I use my Milani silky matte powder bronzer, $12, and a very fluffy eyeshadow brush. Then, just below the lower lip, focusing mostly on the center, you want to create the appearance of a shadow. Step back and look at it, you’ll be shocked at how doing just that makes the lower lip look a little fuller.

Step 2: Let’s Overline
Take a lip liner that is two shades darker than your natural lip color or one that matches your actual lipstick or gloss you’ll be using. I just started using the Maybelline Lifter Liners, $8, and I love ‘em! I’m using the shade “Out of Line” here. Incredible staying power and blendability! Make sure you have a good pencil sharpener, $7, handy!
Now apply the lip liner using a subtle overlining technique, just focusing on the center of your upper and lower lip. Go right out over the outside edge, mainly in the center only of the upper lip between the cupid’s bow and lower lip. Then, when you progress to the outer edges, follow back right on the true lip line. I like to blur out my liner sometimes, and I did that with a simple, tiny concealer or lip brush.

Step 3: Apply Your Lipstick or Gloss, or BOTH
Now, just fill your lips in with the lipstick or gloss of your choice. Make sure to really focus on applying this directly on top of those extended lines you created in the center of the upper and lower lip for the fullest results possible. I’m using the L’Oreal Infallible matte resistant liquid lipstick in “first kiss”, $11.

I am truly obsessed with the longevity of this formula. And now they have a new L’Oreal Lacque Resistance liquid lipstick, $12, that gives shine, but not too much, and stays on forever!! Ladies, try these! You could just use this new formula if you don’t want the extra step below 🙂

And since I don’t recommend keeping a matte formula on if you want to have the illusion of your fullest lips, you need to top it with shine and gloss. I added the L’Oreal Glow Balm gloss, in shade “Pristine Pink”, just in the very center of my lips. A lighter shade of gloss than the lipstick, placed just in the center, also creates added fullness to your pout!
Final Thoughts: Best Tips for Aging Lips
Want an actual lip plumping gloss? I just tried out this popular one by Polite Society BIG Mouth XL gloss, $32 in the store at Ulta, and WOW does it visually plump your lips in mere seconds. My daughter and I couldn’t believe our eyes. I wasn’t brave enough to buy it that day, because I’ll be honest, it BURNED, but I am considering going back to it because of the results, and I might just have to work through the discomfort! Ha! Has anyone else tried it?
If you want one that’s a bit more gentle, try the Maybelline Plump version of their lifter glosses, $12. And if you missed last week’s post, it was 8 Highly Underrated Beauty Products I think deserve more attention!!
