hey gang! september is here, which means fall is right around the corner. i can’t wait for sweaters, scarves, boots and jackets! since it will be a while before temps cool off here, i will enjoy wearing shorts for as long as i can. and today i am doing just that, with a great transition piece – a long sleeve tee! we have a delicious appetizer today and a cocktail just perfect for the end of summer. happy friday – it’s fridays with oscar…or is it?
this is a rare occasion indeed. fridays with oscar, without oscar. the old boy had a scheduling conflict today: a spa day at the groomers. not to worry, his trusty understudy and protege, pax is stepping in.
this striped long sleeve tee from Talbots is currently only available in xs, but here are similar options: similar 1, similar 2, similar 3. a medium-weight long sleeve tee for summer’s transition to fall is just the ticket with shorts (similar here, here, here).
striped top | similar striped top | similar shorts | platform sneakers
my favorite part of this outfit though, are my new Vince platform sneakers. i scored these along with a snake print version during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. slip on sneakers are a great transition go-to. they are comfortable and versatile – perfect with skirts, shorts, jeans, chinos and khakis. platform sneakers are trending again this year and i have to say i love how the platform adds a polished look to a slip on sneaker.
this salad is cool and refreshing. the avocado adds some healthy fat, so you definitely feel satisfied with this dish as a lunch or snack. other serving options would be to dice up the avocado, stir it into the shrimp mixture and serve with crackers or tortilla chips. or make it an avocado toast by slicing the avocado and layering it on toast with the shrimp mixture on top.
whisk shallot, mayonnaise, sour cream, lime juice, orange juice – salt to taste.
toss shrimp, chile and dressing together. refrigerate 20 minutes or up to 2 hours.
to serve, use a slotted spoon and spoon shrimp mixture into avocado halves and drizzle with remaining dressing.
the strawberry and basil flavors are intense and really do taste like summer! the syrup is simple to make and you should make a lot of it because you will enjoy this with and without the gin! for the mocktail, just mix syrup with plain or lime sparkling water to taste – it’s so refreshing!
mix strawberries, water, sugar, and honey in a small sauce pot. bring to a simmer and stir to dissolve.
add the basil leaves and simmer about 10 minutes and liquid is bright red. remove from heat and let steep 5 minutes.
pour the syrup through a fine mesh strainer, don’t press down on the leftover strawberries or your syrup will get cloudy. discard strawberries and basil. let syrup cool completely.
combine the gin and syrup over ice in a shaker, shake and pour into glass. top with sparkling water and garnish with basil leaves
for a strawberry basil soda, omit the gin!
while oscar is having a spa day at the groomers, pax is here to bring cuteness and mischief. pax has a lot to learn from his uncle oscar when it comes to modeling. but he held on long enough to get a few pictures before he let go with the zoomies.
despite his bout of zoomies, not a single light, tripod or cocktail was knocked over as he zoomed around the living room!
well gang, it’s about time for me to pick oscar up from the groomer, so this closes another fridays with oscar (starring pax!). this week, we have shared reader favorite posts from this summer. in case you missed it, we had a tour of my living room, a tour of my organized kitchen, how to wear matching separates and back to summer basics. all of us here at style at a certain age wish all of you a wonderful weekend!

Welcome to Fridays Pax! Nice to see him filling in. He got so big!
Wishing you and your family a happy holiday weekend. Enjoy!
I like your outfit for today. Pax is adorable with one ear up and one down. He did a good job. Pats to him and Oscar and to you!
I missed Oscar, but Pax is really a cute puppy!
Happy September to everyone! Hi, Pax! Missing our Oscar this morning but he deserves that spa day anytime! You, as ever, look ready for transitioning us into Fall. I love avocado toast and adding shrimp is a fantastic idea! Have a great Labor Day weekend. Lord knows, you and yours have earned it!~
love your new buddy Pax!
say hello to Oscar when he gets back from the salon……
Hi Beth, well done Oscar for getting his Spa day, I hope he’s having a good time. Well done to Pax food stepping in and the understudy too. Recipes look great, I am sitting with a G & T before our evening meal. Love the outfit, a lovely relaxed look. Have a great weekend xoxo Julie from England
Pax has a lovely smile. Growing up into a lovely dog. I do hope that Oscar has not had anything to radical done at the groomers. No spike cuts etc. Enjoy your weekend
Hey Beth,
I do look forward to your cheery chats and Fridays with Oscar. So, I was pleased to read on and find that Oscar was at the beauty parlour, not the vet! Pax is a cutie, but Oscar reigns supreme! Cheers
Love the cute overload today. Pax is so precious. I love the shoes with that extra notch of style. I’m really loving their color. I might be moving away from black this year. I would rate the recipes but without trying them first, I can’t tell. They look wonderful.
Hi BEth! It’s Talbot’s girl. Thank you for showing one of our Authentic Tee today. I have the very same shirt, and wide-crop chinos in the rust color to match, the shirt also complements pick like you’re wearing and black. I love this Tee style and have about a half dozen (so far). Just letting everyone know that Talbots is holding an end-of-summer sales, 70% plus 20% off REDUCED prices. Jeans that were $95 are now $15!! Final Sale, but worth the trip!
