what fun i’m having this month as Talbots Fall Classics Guest Editor! if you missed last week’s post where i kicked off this series, please take a moment to stop by and read. the classic item we discussed was the mighty blazer an integral part of my style uniform as well as a pair of humble blue jeans. both pieces are classic and timeless and are wardrobe essentials i reach for time and again.

this week we’re taking a look at another hard working classic essential – the pencil skirt. since i love to dig a little deeper into the how’s and why’s of fashion i discovered the first pencil skirt appeared on the scene in 1954. the slim fitting skirt designed by iconic designer Christian Dior was introduced as part of his H-line collection. it was a dramatic shift away from tight waists and full skirts which had dictated fashion runways for several years. the hem falls just to or below the knee for a tailored close fit. its name, pencil skirt, was coined for its shape – long and lean like a pencil. when this skirt was first introduced in the mid-fifties, it immediately became a staple of work wardrobes with the hemline rising or lowering depending on current trends. pencil skirts look fantastic with cardigans or blazers that take are perfect for a nine-to-five look. if your office has a relaxed dress code, don’t be afraid to wear a pencil skirt sans blazer. instead, choose a fitted top or tee in a solid color for a fun and casual look. don’t you love a closet staple that can easily be dressed up or down? versatility is a key factor for a hard-working wardrobe.
