since i started my youtube journey, and more specifically the beauty edition, i’ve been struck by the lack of knowledge i possess in regards to an industry i spend an inordinate amount of money on. namely skincare products. what’s wrong with this picture? don’t get me wrong; i have a working knowledge of what’s good, better, best for my skin. and i have a skincare regimen that’s been in place for decades. but when i dig a little deeper into what ingredients are good for me and more importantly what’s not i’ve stumbled on more than one important fact.

first off, did you know that our skin is our largest organ? well, it is. for some reason, i never considered my skin as a thriving, living organ. even though i slather on a good amount of moisturizer from head to toe and a slew of other products on my face every single day. but thinking about my skin as a living organism is a fresh take for me. if i’m conscious of what i eat and take the extra step to investigate if those yummy veggies were sprayed with toxic chemicals or decide to choose eggs laid by free-range chickens shouldn’t i question if the ingredients i’m slathering on my skin are toxic or not? exactly! especially since the average number of products used by women every day adds up to eleven. eleven! if there are questionable ingredients in just a few of those products it adds up very quickly.

these statistics got me to thinking. thinking, that i need to hold myself accountable to a higher standard. and when i started to dig a little deeper i discovered that Europe bans over 1300 ingredients from cosmetics. guess how many ingredients the US ban? go ahead give it your best guess. did you think it might be a similar number? or at least in the triple digits? guess again. there only 11 ingredients the US bans or restricted in the cosmetics industry.

it’s safe to say, ladies, that we need to be our own self-advocates when it comes to sustainable beauty products. because a little toxin in your shampoo or a little toxin in my moisturizer adds up. and adds up quickly. if the ingredients are harmful to me (and you) can you imagine what we are doing to good old reliable mother earth?
