goodbye mr. style

goodbye mr. style

this will be the hardest post i’ve ever written. because how do you say goodbye to your best friend and partner of more than thirty-five years? there are no words that can sum up one man’s life. only days ago, mr. style lost his battle with cancer. but he left this world on his terms and in his own time surrounded by the ones who loved him most. and he went out with style with his walking stick in one hand and a panama hat perched on his head. he was headed for home after watching a movie at the theater. it was family date night and mr. style was hell-bent on joining us. what a fitting way to leave this earth he called home for 67 years.

mr. style was a simple man. and a selfless man who always put his family first. he loved vanilla ice cream, fountain pens dipped in ink, golf courses with manicured fairways, and his family. he was strong-willed, compassionate, reliable and steadfast. he was the rock who anchored our family. he reveled in our children’s accomplishments, hurt with their disappointments, and felt sheer joy and delight in spending time with them. at the mere mention of one of their names, mr. style’s eyes would shine brighter, and his smile would grow bigger.

goodbye mr. style

mr. style was the guiding force behind this blog, taking my photos, and sharing his business acumen. he took such joy and beamed with pride in the success of my new found career. but none of this would have been possible without his steady hand behind the scenes. i am forever grateful for his photos that chronicle the last years of his life. he readily admitted he wasn’t the most proficient photographer. but each and every photo was snapped with an abundance of love and devoted commitment.

in the end, his body betrayed him, and his strength began to fail. but he never complained, and he wasn’t afraid because he knew this earth was only a temporary home. without a shadow of a doubt, he understood that his home was in heaven; this was Christ’s promise to us:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going away to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

goodbye mr. style

those of us left behind are devastated with our loss. it will take weeks, and months and years to truly heal. but we’re determined to live our lives with strength and dignity and grace to keep his legacy alive. and we take heart with the knowledge that mr. style suffers no more because there are no more tears in heaven.

goodbye mr. style

the blog he helped create will continue, but we are taking time to grieve before we return. thank you all for your love and understanding.

I am so sorry. Cancer truly sucks. It suddenly appears in your life with the result of a single test or biopsy, changing your life and never truly releasing its hold, affecting the patient, family and friends. I never truly understood the terms, “battling cancer” or “fighting cancer” until it became personal. It is truly a battle. I am glad you have family and faith to help you get through this. Prayers are with you.

There are no words to express what I am feeling, Beth. Having been through a similar life path, the only thing I can offer is not to be afraid to share your memories of him, the good bad, irreverent, and all the rest. He was your love, the boys’ father, and human.

My family and my job teaching were my saviors. Plus, because of the cancer we did a lot of anticipatory grieving. As trite as it might be, anyone who loses the battle against a prolonged disease is TRULY in a better place.

It is obvious that Mr. Style has impeccable taste because he left this world to go to the other, in style!
In Christ alone, the process of mourning and grieving will bring strength as the hope of seeing him again in heaven, meticulously dressed in his Robe of righteousness, will bring you comfort.
It hasn’t been a year yet, since I signed up to these beautiful tutorials on style and life, I live in the Winder area of Georgia, and have learned so much and I thank the both of you.

As a fellow cancer widow I know too well the pride you feel for the way he lived and loved – even with the knowledge that his time was limited and the enormous vacuum that results the loss of your partner in all things life. I am almost 4-years out from my husband’s death and more than 9 since his diagnosis. The biggest thing I’ve learned is that love lives on in your heart. I hope yours lives forever.

Beth, I grieve with you and I understand. My husband of 25 years went home to have coffee with Jesus almost six years ago, and I still miss him. I have chosen to remember only the good, and I am comforted that I will see him in Glory. I’ll be praying for your family as y’all adjust the reality of life without Mr. Style’s physical presence.

It is fitting that he passed over in the month of fireworks. Heaven “rocked” when Mr. Styles entered his permanent home.💥🙏🏻 Jesus said, “ Come my dear one and beautiful gift!” Mr. Style conquered his temporary home.
Oh the beautiful Glory! Praying for the rest and peace of you and your gorgeous family. We are looking forward to hearing more about Mr. Style, you, your gentlemen, Oscar and Ollie.🎊❤️🙏🏻🐾🐶💥

My father passed, from pancreatic cancer, the same way 21 years ago doing what he loved, visiting with family and friends until he just couldn’t anymore. He left this world in the presence of the two he knew would take it the hardest….my sister and my daughter….peacefully with a rosary in his hand. God bless you all.

I am so pleased to hear he was a believer and that you will all be together again someday. Praise Jesus. I celebrate with you that there are no tears in heaven. Yet, I embrace you in my heart for your incredible loss.

I renew my offer to help you with anything you need in the blogging world. I could never match your style or writing but perhaps there is some task that you MUST get done which is too daunting…please let it be known that I will help you with anything.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I am still with my partner and the love of my life……we met in grammar school and have now been married for 41 years. And I can’t imagine my life without him……so I think I can begin to understand what you are going through. But only “begin”, as I’m sure you can’t ever really know, until it’s happened to your family.

I also want to commend you, though, for the graceful way you have handled this. You have set the bar high for the rest of us, but most of all, I am sure that your quiet determination to handle this with such strength brought a GREAT deal of comfort to your husband. He must have been able to foresee your ability to get through this. I know that if this were my husband, his greatest concern would have been with ME. And clearly you gave your husband the gift of PEACE. There would have been no greater way to ease him into the next world.

I’m glad you have three strong sons who surely will continue to honor their father by “looking after” you. And you have us! So I hope you will check in soon and let us know how you are doing.

Wishing you peace and continued strength.

Dear Beth, as I read your beautiful tribute to Mr. Style, I was so thankful to know he believed. The difficulty of the missing piece of the family will all be taken away when we all are reunited again. And what a wonderful celebration that will be. ‘Til then I pray that God will take your family under His wing and give you strength and peace during the time that follows. Allow yourselves time to grieve. God will wipe away those tears. He created tear ducts for a reason. Don’t let others dictate when the grieving is over. Anyone who has lost a loved one can attest to the fact that the grieving doesn’t end, it just changes over time and you are the only one who can know when that time is over. God take care of you all.

Beth, thank you for telling us earlier that he was failing. When you missed a post lately we knew why and prayed for him and you and your family all the more. You’ve been on my heart since your last post. The silence has been foreboding. I’m a writer too and I have ached with your desire to keep writing your fun, breezy blog while your heart is breaking in two. I know how hard is to write with one emotional tone and voice when your true heart is in free fall.

I’ve been reminded of Psalm 137: ” By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept… (You probably remember that Jerusalem had been sacked and the Jews had been force-marched to captivity in Babylon.)…there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion!’ How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a foreign land?” Exactly. How can you write a fun, creative fashion blog when your loved one is dying?

I don’t know how you have done as much as you have. But I’m sure your gallant (and, as usual, excellent) efforts have endeared you to your readers that much more. And have energized our prayers for you all the more. You have been much on my heart this weekend. Now I know why. May the God of all comfort carry you. He loves you more than you can imagine. “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life…nor things present not things to come…nor anything else in all creation shall be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord ” (Rom 8:38-39)

You will always miss him but I remember saying that when my husband passed away from cancer two years ago…..I couldn’t wish to keep him here with me knowing how much he suffered and knowing that he was going to be with Jesus in heaven in perfect peace. God bless you and your family as you grieve the loss of such a great love for all of you.

You and your family are in my prayers. It is not easy losing your soulmate. Lean on the Lord and be surrounded by your family, especially in the firsts, first (year) holiday, birthday, anniversary. It has been 15 and a half years since I lost the love of my life. The month he passed is still difficult, but I know he’s with the Lord and I still have work to accomplish before the Lord calls me home, so I try to keep busy. The Lord is my strength and my refuge.

    Beth,
Let me add to the many who send you deepest condolences on your loss. He sounds like an interesting, fun man and you were lucky to have him in your life for so long. I suspect, too, though, that he was lucky to have you. There’s an Eskimo saying I can’t recall exactly but I’d like to share. It goes something, like: Maybe those are not stars in the sky. Maybe they are openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are happy.

Oh, Beth, I’m so very, very sorry to learn of your loss. Your lovely tribute depicts Mr. Style beautifully, and I can only imagine your grief over his loss. I hadn’t been able to log in the past few days, and I always try to log into your blog to see if there are any updates on his condition. My heart goes out to your family. He sounds as if he was a wonderful husband and father. I hope your beautiful memories will sustain you during this painful time. He leaves an amazing legacy, and I’m a believer that our loved ones live on through us and envelop us always. Please know you are in my thoughts.

When my dad died two months ago, a dear friend sent me the following note.
Your mind will still think of him.
Your heart will still ache for him.
Your eyes will still look for him.
But, your soul knows he is at peace.

Beth – I was overcome with sadness and tears when I read this post. I felt I knew Mr. Style and his death was personal to me. I feel I know you, too, though we’ve never met and you don’t know my name. We grew up as part of the same generation and I sensed that connection through your blog posts, not only with you, but also with Mr. Style. I was so grateful and relieved to learn you are believers in Christ our Savior. Mr. Style now has a strong body and mind and has been accepted fully into that glorious Kingdom we all yearn for. His paid is gone and he waits for you and all his family to join him. Hold fast to Christ, Beth. He will sustain you. With my love, compassion, and prayers. Ann Meeker

Ah, I hate this for you!

I know having to sit down and pen his loss was wrenching for you. Thank you for letting your blog followers know as he will be greatly missed. And I am sure we will all want to know how your progressing as you and yours move forward.

The post is so nice. Your dress was beautiful and perfect for the setting. You truly are the queen of style.

Take Mr, Style’s favorite shirt, put a few drops of his favorite cologne on it, take hold of his favorite book, and go curl up in his favorite chair and feel close to him once again when you feel low. But do get up and continue to carry on with Style At A Certain Age. Staying busy with the wonderful blog you have created will help you heal in ways you just – can not now see. Continuing to help other people is going to – help you.

And if I may give you one more piece of advice bought at a dear price it would be to have someone your very close to: son, best friend, with you at the two week mark. That is the time when it may possibly hit you hardest that Mr,Style is truly gone – when you walk into your home and everyone you know has gone back to work, school, vacation, etc., and that bill is due, or the car is not working. Make a date now to be with that special friend in person – in two weeks. And do not hesitate to seek grief counseling because there may be things you can not say to anyone else; grief counselors are required by law to ho,d your confidence.

I am so glad you look forward to a new Heaven and a new Earth. There are 3 hydrogen based planets that we know of, but they are too far away for our bodies not to disintegrate on the way there. However,, if we can go there we will never be sick, grow old, or die – as we do on this plant based Earth. “And we shall all be changed in the moment of a twinkling of an eye and be caught up together to meet Him in the air.”

    Looking forward to that day!

I am not a regular viewer of your blog but sometimes I enjoy looking at your website. I was saddened to hear of your husband’s death this July. My husband of 57 year died of Parkinson’s last year and I miss him so much. But, like you and Mr. Style, I know he is with God in a joyful and peaceful place and I will see him again someday. I attended a Grief Share class at a nearby church and it helped me so much. Praying for God’s peace that only He can give for you and your family.

Beth….you and your family are in my prayers! I pray for y’all to have strength and comfort in the days to come! I couldn’t even post until today. I truly feel your heartache….no one knows that until it happens under your roof! My husband passed away in 2012 at age 59 after 50 something hospital stays, 27 surgeries, 17 stints, renal failure, and hospice (he was self-employed and no income since age 49). My goal each day…all those years prior to his death was to keep him alive and a roof over our head with just my income. Besides all the heartache of missing him….I truly did not know what to do with myself each day after he was gone. I had to figure out what my purpose was each day! Just breathe and take one day at a time! Will remember you and yours in my prayers!
