cruise wear? resort wear? are they the same thing? the answer to that question is yes; cruise wear and resort wear are exactly the same thing. at the beginning of the 20th century, it became a trend for wealthy people around the world to take cruises and holidays in warmer climates during the winter months. born was the necessity for clothing which was easy to pack, suited for warm temperatures and vacation activities. fashion designers created warm weather/vacation collections for sale in the offseason (october), catering to wealthy travelers. at the same time, a revolution in women’s fashion was taking shape thanks to the end of the corset as a foundational garment.

chanel’s introduction to more versatile silhouettes, fabrics (jersey) and soft tailoring herald the shift in women’s wear from corset-based rigidity. chanel had a shop in the resort town of deauville, france in 1913 and her sportswear became a great success with vacationers and locals alike.

resort wear has always been about warmer climates, with prints and colors indicative of tropical environs, but perhaps no brand capitalized on that better than lilly pulitzer.

on our caribbean cruise, i packed a matching ensemble by my favorite designer ralph lauren that easily converts into separates. today, i decided to wear all three pieces although the cropped pants were last seen here and here. green is my go-to color this fall, and it’s not often you find a green striped tee so i scooped this one up in a nanosecond. love the long rounded hem and embroidered embellishments that add a little pizazz. a surplus-inspired jacket with patch pockets and gold hardware is the finishing touch. believe me, a jacket comes in handy on a cruise ship. while the outside temps were balmy and breezy, inside the ship can be downright chilly.

I like the slight flare at the hemline of these pants. This makes them very wearable for different body shapes.

Nice green! It looks like you could mix and match each of these pieces in numerous iterations. My son and I went on a cruise once when he was younger, in January–and we’d packed lots of appropriate clothes for the islands, but at one point it got so unexpectedly cold we actually ran into a shop and purchased a coat it was so cold. So it’s never a bad idea to have some layering pieces, I guess! And a wrap or two.

i’ve learned the hard way, too! it is never a bad idea to pack a lightweight coat or sweater. there’s nothing worse than shivering especially on vacation. xo
