charming charleston

and it’s home again, home again, jiggety jig. although, i could have stayed in charleston for several more days. what a charming city full of shopping, restaurants, southern hospitality, and a little eye candy on every street. if you are a history buff, then this is one city you don’t want to miss! charleston has had a front row seat to american history since its infancy.

on our first full day in town, mr. style and i went shopping. first stop, charleston city market one of the nation’s oldest public markets. it is an open air venue that houses anything from sweetgrass baskets to bags of stone ground grits and everything in between. then it was onto a leisurely brunch at eli’s table. the weather was warm enough to dine al fresco in their quaint outdoor courtyard. i started off with a bacon bloody mary and ended with sweet potato pancakes. wow! time to walk off those calories along king street a shopper’s paradise loaded with antique stores, book stores, art galleries, and gift shops. not to mention louis vuitton, kate spade, vineyard vines, st. john, you name it – king street has it.

at some point, our credit cards needed a well-deserved rest so we zigged and zagged our way back to bay street where we caught an afternoon carriage tour with big john. what a delightful way to spend an hour and learn more about local lore. like george washington dancing with 292 women during his week-long stay in 1791. or that the only recognized church was the anglican church. all other denominations were called ‘meeting houses’ and were located up and down meeting street. how about the four corners of law which refer to the intersection of meeting and broad street that house the institutions representing federal, state, local and ecclesiastical law on each corner. lots and lots of fun facts were doled out during our carriage ride past mansions on battery street and the colorful and historic rainbow row.

what a fun and jam-packed day! by the time we headed back to the hotel and change for dinner i was pooped. after i quick shower i rallied, but what did i wear and where did we eat? i’m leaving you in suspense.
