it’s january, ladies, out with the old and with the new. at least a new pair of denim or two.  new denim for the new year as it were.  today, i’m partnering with JCPenney on YouTube and Instagram, but i didn’t want my blog readers to miss out on three snazzy outfits i put together that feature white and black denim.

from time-to-time several of you ask for affordable outfits. well, i can’t think of a brand that helps stretch our budget better than JCPenney. and every item that i’m wearing today is from JCP. it all starts with two pair of Levi Strauss jeans.

black jeans have that slimming effect we all love. which is why i always have one pair of black denim in my closet. pair the black jeans with a black turtleneck for a monochromatic look. add a brown faux suede blazer into the mix for a polished and sophisticated outfit that will keep your winter style game strong all season long. but wait. a pair of snake print pumps are on trend and add a little edge, which keeps us looking fresh and modern.

i know, i know when i was growing up white was reserved for spring and summer. but these days, the modern woman wears white denim 365 days a year. it can be challenging to find the right pair of white denim. sometimes, they reveal a little too much information. but here’s a style tip: size up one size. that should do the trick.

winter neutrals are a classic and elegant look that’s also fresh and modern.

new year, new you, and new denim

it’s wednesday, ladies, time to put a smile on someone’s face, including yours.

i’ve spent the past few days thinking about which single winter clothing item says both “elegant” and “comfortable”.  much of the time, it seems like we’re faced with the false choice between one or the other.  not true.  take the cozy cardigan.  it’s a classic winter staple that belongs in every closet and is the perfect layering piece to add warmth on a cold winter day.  today, i thought i’d talk briefly on how to wear a cozy cardigan.

the cardigan comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, but i’m going to focus on the shawl-collar cardigan sweater and similarly the sweater blazer.  the extra length of both creates an elongating effect on any body type which aesthetically adds a sort of grace and elegance to and for any woman.  in my opinion, the shawl-collar cardigan is that perfect but illusive crossover item that straddles the line of elegance and comfort.

how to wear a cozy cardigan

a cozy cardigan comes in a variety of designs; plain or patterned, wool or cashmere, long or short, open-face or buttons, the options are endless. cozy cardigans look terrific with athleisure, jeans or popped over your pajamas when it’s time to curl up on the couch with a hot cup of tea.

the sheer flexibility of a cozy cardigan makes it a wardrobe essential.  today’s OOTD centers around a (similar) cozy cardigan i picked up from J.Crew.  it’s popped over a crib neck sweater from Everlane. i’m sporting a pair of (similar) girl friend jeans from Talbots that skims my frame rather than hugs.

i’m really feeling the J.Crew and Everlane combination this year and have featured it heavily on the blog over the past few weeks.  we recently featured a perfectly preppy outfit gotten mostly from J.Crew, as well as cashmere sweater dress from Everlane.

hey girlfriend, don’t you love these jeans?

over the past few years, it seems as if skinny jeans have given way to jeggings with a snug fit. we’ve talked a lot about “comfort” on the blog lately, and some days, i just want to wear a plain old fashioned pair of jeans just like the good old days.

this pair of (similar) girlfriend jeans comes pretty close. i’ve coupled them with a pair of penny loafers to create a classic preppy look we’ve featured heavily on the blog.  the outfit has old school charm written all over it.

elegant and elegant.  it’s possible.

in the day of athleisure, sometimes it feels like we’re either dressing for “elegance” or “comfort” but not both.  today, i targeted one item—the comfy cardigan—that perfectly straddles the line.  i styled it in accordance with my favorite aesthetic, but you can easily imagine tailoring it to your own.  below, i’ve compiled a selection of similar comfy cardigans—shawl collar and long sweater blazers.  i know you’ll find one to integrate seamlessly into your own wardrobe.

today, i’m going to give you a tour of my home office.  as a lifestyle and fashion blogger, it’s where i spend most of the time when i’m not on a photo or video shoot.  as part of our new beginnings theme for the month, i’m hoping today’s post will inspire you all to have a stylish home office—and a stylish home more generally.

our homes are our sanctuaries from the madness that is the world around us, so why not make them an extension of ourselves.  why not make it the most comfortable place where our friends and family can gather around and simply be and enjoy each other’s company?

have a stylish home office

on Sunday, i gave you a glimpse into my personal closet.  how to design your home office—or any room in your house—is a totally personal decision and a function of your own aesthetics.  with the advent of Pinterest and other design boards, it’s easy to compile a gallery of inspiration that can serve and guide us on everything from a refresh to a full-blown remodel.

personally, i’m a fan of clean clines and simple design techniques—like contrasting classic and modern design patterns—to create a space i want to be in.  and of course i’m not immune to applying my personal fashion sense to my design one.  animal prints anyone?  if you share similar aesthetics as i do, i’ve compiled several widgets throughout this post of similar home office items like desks and lamps.

a day in the life of a lifestyle blogger

it may come as a surprise (or it may not), that as a lifestyle blogger, i actually spend most of my day in front of my computer doing everything from scripting photo and video shoots to answering emails from you.  so, most days, i prefer to be relaxed and comfy while i work.  and what’s says “comfort” more than a pair of boyfriend jeans.

today, i’m featuring a pair of boyfriend jeans from J.Crew.  i’ve been all about J.Crew this winter, and they’re having a great flash sale today.  so head over and see if you can find a good deal and let me know in the comments.

i’ve paired the jeans with a turtleneck from Everlane.  i’ve been totally obsessed with with turtlenecks this winter. i even posted a how to wear a sweater/turtleneck dress last week in case you missed it.

home is where the heart is

home is where we spend most of our time:  it’s where we can get away from the craziness of everything from traffic to geopolitical happenings.  it’s where our family convenes for the holidays and where friends come over for a cup of coffee and chat.

what’s your home like?  how have you designed it?  have you built a fashionable office?  or do you spend most of your time in the living room in your favorite chair reading a good book?  are your kiddos still at home or are you an empty-nester like me?  have you transformed their rooms into something else entirely or have you left it the way in which they grew up?  let me know in the comments below about everything from your home design choices to what home means to you.

hello, winter! it’s a balmy 48 degrees in Athens today. New York woke up to 40 degrees, but Minneapolis takes the cake with a brisk 36. when the going gets tough, the tough reach for winter essentials. for me, that’s a cashmere turtleneck dress from Everlane. today, we’re going to talk about how to wear a sweater dress multiple ways.

this dress gets lots of mileage on cold winter days. it’s practical enough to fly solo with over-the-knee boots. or layer this dress over leggings. granted, those of you living in the frozen tundra will have to choose your footwear according to the current weather forecast. lucky for me, Athens temps bounce around quite a bit. today its chilly for sure but a seventy-one-degree day is on the horizon. on those days i can get away sans socks. but take heart if that isn’t your cup of tea. nowadays there are so many cute socks or booties to keep your tootsies warm. the twenty-first century offers lots of options.

look 1: over the knee boots & tights

here’s the first look cashmere turtleneck dress, over-the-knee boots (similar here and here), tights, I.N.C coat (similar here and here).

look 2: leather leggings & pumps

a night on the town never needs to be fancy schmancy. but when the temps are hovering in the 40s, i reach for my turtleneck cashmere dress. it keeps me warm and stylish which is a win/win. when i purchased this dress from Everlane, i knew it would easily double as a tunic. don’t you love how it looks with faux leather leggings similar here? suede pumps (similar here) elevate this outfit to date night stature. if you wanted a daytime look simply exchange the pumps for ankle boots. many northern gals ask what type of socks i would wear if the weather were colder? in that case, i would wear nude tights or anklet or knee-high socks.

look 3: monochromatic

with this look, you’d think i just returned from New York.  i didn’t, not this week anyway, but how cute is this cashmere turtleneck dress styled monochromatically?  i’ll i’ve really done here is slightly alter look 1 by swapping out the jacket. i’ve kept it simple here with black on black and an embroidered jacket.  (similar pippa cardigan here.) by pairing the dress with over-the knee boots (similar boot and similar boot 2) as well as a pair of tights.

all right, gang, bundle up and stay warm!

happy new year 2020! it’s a new day, new decade and new beginnings. welcome 2020. today’s post is short and sweet. while we’re ushering in a new year, we’re saying goodbye to the holidays, which have kept us all hopping. i don’t know about you, but i’m ready to refresh my home and wardrobe. the decorations are down, and i’m looking at my home with fresh eyes. the same goes for my closet. January is all about new beginnings:  new fashion for the new year. but we don’t necessarily have to run out and purchase something new. today, i’m shopping my closet to bring you a brand new outfit with a twist. think Blackwatch plaid is reserved just for Christmas or a holiday party? think again. of course, i wore these adorable Blackwatch plaid pants from J.Crew for my second annual cookie exchange. Talbots also carries a fabulous pair of Blackwatch plaid pants too. come January, why not wear your plaid pants with a vibrant green sweater also from J.Crew last seen on fridays with oscar?

the coatigan (similar here) was last seen in January 2018 on Ann Taylor winter favorites. guess what? it’s still a favorite coat/cardigan to throw on when the temps are on the mild side. y’all know how fond i am of pearls. so why not add a multistrand necklace from J.Crew Factory to add a little personality and pizazz to this ootd. black pumps that i wear on repeat and a black handbag (old, similar here) bring this outfit home.

wishing you a very happy new year! let’s make each and every day count.

we’re continuing (and ending) with our final installment of my top outfit picks of the decade.  today, we’re bringing you a yearly retrospective:  the top outfits for women over 50 in 2019.  2019 was a quite the year:  so many highs, and equally many lows.  as some of you might know, this is the year my oldest got married.  it’s also the year mr. style passed away.  this is also the year we brought on junior style and my daughter-in-law Kelly to work at the blog.

impossible to put this year into meaningful words, really.  so i will leave it at this:  thank you, my readers, for all of your support over this past year.  the outpouring of love continues to sustain me.  we ended 2019 strong, and we have plans to continue to grow in 2020.  so without further ado, here are the top 5 outfits of 2019.

crewneck, trench coat, and skinny jeans

beth from Style at a Certain Age wears an Everlane grey cashmere crewneck, high rise black cigarette jean, Tory Burch black ballet flats and a double-breasted trench coat

the first outfit up is taken from how to wear timeless classics: crewneck, trenchcoat, and skinny jeans. and it starts with a basic cashmere crewneck in a basic color – gray. this year i am loving Everlane cashmere sweaters.  the price point is great as is the quality. and i like the slim fit that isn’t snug.

the sweater is paired with a stretch high rise cigarette jean from Everlane. this straight leg jean features a hidden button fly and smoothing front pockets. it’s also made of an innovative fabric that has stretch yet has an authentic denim look. this is my first time wearing these high rise jeans. the fabric has some give but doesn’t end up looking saggy and baggy by the end of the day. typically, i wear size 8 or 29, but i sized up to a 30 for these jeans.

mother of the bride or groom dress

destination wedding | mother of the bride

coming in second is are the dresses from the post mother of the bride or groom dress.  our oldest son was married in May. of course, i was on the hunt for the perfect mother of the groom dress. there were three dresses that made the final cut for my mother of the groom dress. the wedding party colors were blues and greens. so i stayed within that color palette.

another factor that played into my decision making was that the wedding was held outside in a rustic setting. short dresses are perfect for afternoon weddings. a jumpsuit would be a suitable alternative.

wide-leg jeans

wide leg jeans, gray turtleneck, red handbag

the third outfit comes from the post wide-leg jeans | what’s on trend for fall.  i’m sharing wide-leg jeans that are on-trend for fall. if you are looking to update your wardrobe in a jiff, look no further than an updated pair of blue jeans.

wide leg jeans, gray turtleneck, red handbag

it’s an easy and inexpensive way to look modern and chic because we all know a great pair of denim will take you anywhere in style. personally, i’m loving wide-leg jeans and the high-waist. it’s a refreshing change from the skinny or straight jean.

cashmere from head-to-toe

coming in fourth today is a recent outfit taken from cashmere from head-to-toe | thanksgiving gift guide.  it’s been all about J.Crew for me this fall and winter.  today, i’m sporting a matching camel cashmere sweater layered with a cashmere sweater-blazer

an easy way to break up this chromatic pairing is with a color pop.  i’ve chosen to do so with this silk scarf from Talbots.   i’ve been loving the silk scarves this year. and if you’re looking for some more ideas, this one from Talbots is one of our best sellers.

how to wear a yellow raincoat

our last outfit comes from the first of the year: how to wear a yellow raincoat.  the month (and year) started with a bang with a Talbots collaboration how to wear a yellow raincoat. while January is anything but warm this is the month we start to think about spring. if you’re looking for the perfect yellow slicker this might be the one. not only does this raincoat have a hood it’s lined with stripes!

what’s the best part of winter? yes, in five short days, fall will officially turn over the keys to old man winter. the season will last until march 19, 2020, which totals three entire months of winter gear. but don’t worry, i’ve got you covered, ladies. today, i’m partnering with Nordstrom to share five classic winter wardrobe essentials that will get you through the coldest winter months in style.

what’s on the winter essentials list? of course, boots (similar here) always come in handy this time of year whether they’re suede or leather, knee-high, over the knee, or a cute pair of booties. a cashmere sweater is always a good choice when the north wind starts to blow. midi-skirts are all the rage this season, and a teddy coat (similar here) will keep you toasty warm. but don’t forget to add a stylish handbag into the mix. love, love, love the circle handbag (similar here and here) from Rebecca Minkoff purchased in July at the fabulous Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

but if you’re in the market for an affordable brand, look no further than Halogen that dishes up trendy and classic items all year long. i was so impressed with this Halogen cashmere turtleneck that i purchased for my trip to France that i picked one up in camel.

are you ready to get monday underway? ready or not it’s here. the countdown is on gang. nine days until Christmas day.

a big thank you to Nordstrom for this sponsored post. and thank you, lovely readers, for supporting the brands that allow me to bring you fresh ideas.

today, i’m traveling down memory lane. at the end of the year, it’s next to impossible not to take a moment and reflect on the previous twelve months. and we’ll be sharing a fun series in the next week or two as we wrap up another year and another decade. can you believe it, ladies? in a few short weeks, 2020 will be knocking on our door. so we thought it would be fun to share the top outfits of the decade starting with 2015 all the way through 2019. it’s been a fun project flipping through old blog photos! sometimes, i slap my forehead and wonder what the heck i was thinking. but, hey, it’s fashion. it’s totally okay to make a mistake. that’s how we grow and continue to streamline our style. but i couldn’t resist sharing this photo set that was taken at the inception of the blog. if you can believe it, the photos remain a Pinterest favorite. not long ago, i shared this pic on Instagram, and it was a hit over there too. do you know why this outfit has staying power? it’s classic through and through.

there’s no denying that a simple ootd is sometimes the best ootd (outfit of the day). what’s better than a chunky turtleneck and blue jeans? especially this time of year. and you can amp up your style game by slipping a plaid flannel shirt underneath.

i know, i know, some of us loathe distressed jeans, and some of us love them. personally, i think they add FUN to an outfit. and we all need a playful side of our wardrobe. no matter what age. but whatever your opinion is of distressed jeans, we know that different styles of denim come and go. but we also know blue jeans are here to stay. amen! they’re a wardrobe staple. and they were born and bred here in the USA, thanks to Levi Strauss.

all right, ladies, another sunday is in the books. there are only two more left in 2019. i hope you’re all enjoying these precious last days of the decade. let’s make every minute count.

pleated midi skirts are on-trend this year.  and yes, it’s OK for ladies of a certain age to be on trend from time-to-time.  as we get older, it’s easy to adopt the mindset that we’re above trends; that because they’re fleeting and passing they’re not worth the time or investment.

that may be true, at least in part, but sometimes it’s good to get out of our fashion comfort zone and break some self-imposed style rules.  today, i’ve (re-)styled for you a pleated midi skirt i first showcased this fall.  i want to highlight its seasonal versatility and give you a variety of alternatives to potentially integrate into your wardrobe.

midi skirts are on-trend

for those of you that follow this blog regularly, you might remember today’s skirt .  i first debuted it in my fall haul with JCPenny.  there, i paired it with a silk blouse.  today, i’ve kept the skirt but swapped out the blouse for a cashmere sweater.  as you all know, i’m a big believer in outfit reusability, flexibility and ease:  we shouldn’t have to invest in entire new wardrobes season-to-season.  it’s so easy to throw on a midi skirt and sweater and walk out the door looking pulled together at a moment’s notice.

she says, “hey baby, take a walk on the wild side”

i’ve got Lou Reed stuck in my head today.  you’d think it’d be a Christmas carol, but no.  it’s Walk on the Wild Side.  could be a lot, lot worse.

have a song stuck in your head this week? let me know in the comments below.

that’s a (cashmere sweater) wrap!

i’ve been all about the cashmere this winter.  i’ve given you several options over the past few weeks, and today’s no exception.  i’ve got a beautiful one from Nordstrom (and here) and a similar from Ann Taylor. for cooler weather (or if you don’t want any skin showing), couple today’s midi skirt with a pair of knee-highs and you’ll be taking a walk on the wild side too.
