Happy Friday, ladies!  You know what that means:  it's Friday with Oscar over here on the blog.  With Fourth of July quickly approaching, we're talking how to outdoor entertain this Summer.

Even though temps are soaring here in Athens, I still try to spend as much time as I can outside---especially when I have guests over.  Whether it's on the porch or in the yard, there's nothing more satisfying than spending a Southern evening outside with others.

So today, I thought I'd share a little inspiration on how to outdoor entertain.  I'm showing you my Fourth of July Tablescape and some lawn games I've picked up to play with the family this year.  And of course, I've a super-simple recipe and drink ideas that will surely please your guests.

From Oscar, Ollie, and myself, we're wishing you an absolutely beautiful weekend.  Cheers!

The Summary

Today I've got a super simple casual outfit perfect for spending time outdoors

I'm sharing a recipe for chicken stuffed french bread

I've pulled together a ton of drink ideas from "patriotic water" to homemade, flavored tea

I'm showing you some new lawn games I picked up to play with my kiddos and their families this Summer

How To Outdoor Entertain This Summer

1. Chambray Popover

(J.Crew)

Today's outfit couldn't be simpler:  a chambray popover (J.Crew, sold out, similar), denim shorts, and sandals.  Yup, red, white, and blue.

Chambray popovers are a Summer must.  They go with just about everything:  skirts, shorts, pants---you name it.  Make sure to check out some of my alternative stylings.  I've got my eye on a new FARM Rio skirt that will absolutely pops with this top.

Chicken Stuffed French Bread

  • Author: Beth Djalali

Ingredients

Scale

1 loaf French bread

1 pound shredded chicken (a rotisserie chicken works great)

1 1/2 cups Colby-Jack cheese, shredded

2 green onions sliced thin

1 cup celery, chopped

1 to 2 cups ranch dressing

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.

Slice the French bread in half lengthwise. Place both halves cut side up on prepared baking sheet.

In a large bowl, mix together shredded chicken, cheese, green onions, celery and ranch dressing to make mixture wet.

Spread chicken mixture evenly over one half of bread. Top with other half.

Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until cheese is melted. Remove from oven and let stand 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

3. Iced Tea & Fruit Combos

When the weather is hot it’s important to keep your guests hydrated. One drink dispenser is full of water or in this case Patriotic water - red, white, and blue! Blueberries sink to the bottom of the dispenser while the strawberries float to the top making a red, white, and blue stripe. And who doesn’t love sun tea this time of year?! I simply added peaches and rosemary for added flavor. Here are a few more ideas:

Iced Tea & Fruit Combos:

  • Peaches & Blueberries (with black tea)
  • Oranges & Mint (with oolong)
  • Cucumber & Mint (with green tea)
  • Mango & Ginger (with oolong tea)
  • Apple & Spearmint (with green tea)

4. Yard Games

We're never too old to play games, especially when the kiddos (or grand kiddos) are over.  I love, love, love having yard games.

All of my sons are in town and are coming over tonight.  I've got bean bag toss and a battle chip golfing game we're going to try out.  (Even if it is 98 degrees outside!)

In Case You Missed It

Yesterday, I showed you my favorite shoes for Summer.  Click the title or image below to read the article.

Happy Friday, ladies!  June is moving, and moving fast.  Almost at the halfway point, which is incredibly hard for me to believe.  I'm headed to Charleston this weekend with an old, dear friend.  And I'm really looking forward to it.

As for today, we're up to our usual Friday business over here on the blog:  an appearance from Oscar, a cocktail & salad, and a comfy casual outfit for the weekend.  Plus, I thought I'd throw in the pair of sandals Jackie Kennedy loved, because, well I love Jackie Kennedy.

Oscar, Ollie, and I wish you a very wonderful weekend.  Cheers!

The Summary

Today's featured items are a button-down from J.Crew and slide sandals from Jack's

Both items are modeled, and I pulled together 2 alternates

I've also got a super-simple cocktail and BLT salad on the menu

Finally, I pulled together 5 of my favorite sandals for Summer at the end of the post

The Sandals Jackie Kennedy Loved

1. Button-down

(J.Crew)

One of my favorite style uniforms for summer is a button-up popped over a pair of shorts. It’s simple, it’s easy and it’s polished. Honestly, I could live in oversized button-ups like this blue striped one from J.Crew.

I’ve also purchased several from Everlane and Banana Republic that I love just as much. Wear it with shorts come summer then transition to jeans and chinos in the fall. Who doesn’t love a hard-working wardrobe staple like the mighty button-up?

Beth JUNE 2022

If there is one quintessential pair of preppy summer sandals it has to be Jack Rogers.  Years ago, this iconic shoe was made famous by Jackie Kennedy.

Legend has it that while vacationing in Italy in 1960, she fell in love with a whipstitched sandal with a rondelle detail. Upon her return to the states, she gave a pair to her cobbler in Palm Beach.

When her friends spied the sandal they wanted a pair too. and so the perennial preppy classic was born.

In Case You Missed It

Yesterday, Kelly put together a variety of wedding guest dresses for petites.  Click the title or image below to read the article.

Happy Friday, ladies!  I hope you had a wonderful week.  We're back to our normal schedule this week with a Fridays with Oscar.  Per usual, I've got a super simple cocktail and appetizer perfect for a Friday night on the porch.  Plus, I'm showing you my casual take on a v-neck sweater---an old classic that never really goes out of fashion.

So here's to you ladies:  Ollie, Oscar, and I am wishing you a wonderful weekend!

The Summary

Today's OOTD is a casual take on a v-neck sweater

The outfit is modeled, and I pulled together 2 alternates

Today's cocktail is a limoncello prosecco

Today's appetizer is a fig and goat cheese crostini

A Casual Take on an Old Favorite

1. Tipped V-Neck Slub Vest

(Talbots)

Today's featured item is a v-neck slub vest from Talbots.  Personally, what I love about v-neck sweaters is their versatility.  You can layer them on top of a tank, tee, or button-down.  Or you can wear them without, like I've done today.

My outfit could not be more simple:  a pair of shorts (old, similar here and here) and sandals.  But make sure to check out today's alternatives.  This sweater works great with a pair of denim or cropped wide-leg pants.

Fig and goat cheese crostini

  • Author: Beth Djalali

Ingredients

Scale

1 baguette

2 Tbsp olive oil

1 5 oz soft goat cheese with honey

1/4 C fig butter or fig jam

2 Tbsp honey

10 leaves mint

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°. Slice your baguette into 1/2″ diagonal slices. Cutting on a diagonal will give you more space for toppings and looks better. Place baguette slices on a baking sheet and either drizzle or brush olive oil on top of each one, just one side.

Bake the baguette slices for 5-8 minutes, until the edges are slightly crisp and the center is still soft. They will get a light brown color.

Whipping your goat cheese will make it creamy and easy to spread, rather than crumbly. Place your cheese into the bowl of a stand mixer or use a hand mixer to whip until creamy. About 1 minute. If you can’t find goat cheese with honey already added, add 2 Tbsp of honey and then mix.

Spread about 1 Tbsp of goat cheese onto each slice.

Spread about 1 Tbsp of fig jam on top of the goat cheese.

Place all your slices next to each other (in a square) and then drizzle honey all over. I like honey, so I used about 2 Tbsp, but you can use as much or as little as you like.

Slice your mint leaves into little long pieces and place evenly on top of your fig jam. Don’t skip this step! The mint really sends this over the edge and gives this a fresh taste.

In Case You Missed It

Yesterday, I introduced you to the Coastal Grandmother trend.  Click the title or image below to read the article.

Happy Memorial Day weekend, ladies!  I hope you're getting a chance for some relaxation, and most importantly, to spend the weekend with the people that you love most.  I've got all of the kiddos in town this weekend, and we're going to be BBQing later today---cannot beat burgers and dogs on a hot Summer day.

To celebrate the holiday weekend, I'm extending my Essentials with the 2022 Summer Fashion Essentials Deep Dive.  I've taken my top 9 summer fashion essentials and picked 5 of my favorite items from my favorite retailers for each category.

These 9 items are the items that every woman should own at least 1, if not more, for the Summer months.  From sandals, to handbags, to swimsuits, I've got you covered with the absolute essentials.

The Summary

Today I've put together my top 9 summer fashion essentials

For each essential, I've pulled together 5 of my favorites from my favorite retailers

Each essential is shoppable via a text or image widget

2022 Summer Fashion Essentials Deep Dive

1. Sandals

Nothing says summer more than a pair of slide sandals.  And I'm absolutely loving this year's selection.  Talbots, Madewell, and J.Crew have all knocked it out of the park this season.  They're constantly making our readers' top favorites.

2. Hats

Summer provides the easiest excuse to wear hats.  Going to the beach?  Check.  Celebrating the Derby?  Check.  How about a baseball game?  Check.  Nothing like a Panama hat to beat the heat on a hot Summer day.

3. Graphic Tees

Anyone who follows the blog regularly knows how much I love a good graphic tee.  I will take any opportunity to go shopping for a new one.  So many fun ones this year, and I'm really loving Saks as THE place to shop for them.

4. Dresses

Tuckernuck and FARM Rio have really come on strong with their dress selection.  Whether you're looking for something a little more classic and subdued; or whether you're looking for an eye-popping, colorful statement piece, both of those retailers have you covered.

5. White Sneakers

I'm such a big proponent of white sneakers, I wrote an entire blog post celebrating them.  It's hard to overlook the classics:  Adidas, Nike, and Keds.  A lot of value for your dollar there.  But don't overlook some of the higher-end designers for new takes on old classics.

6. Swimsuits

Talbots and J.Crew take my top spots for swimsuits this year.  Absolutely loving the one-shoulder selection from both retailers.  But don't forget swim dresses this year.  They're totally in style.

7. Wicker & Straw bags

Much like slide sandals, a wicker or straw handbag absolutely screams "Summer".  J.McLaughlin is fast becoming my favorite retailer for handbags, and their summer selection is absolutely fantastic.

8. Shorts

Can't do summer with a wide selection of shorts.  Ann Taylor always tops my list, but Talbots obviously has a fantastic selection.  Whether you're looking for something more classic or something with a modern flare, both retailers have got you covered.

Yesterday, Kelly shared her 5 favorite side dish recipes for a Summer BBQ. Click the title or image below to read the article.

Happy Monday, ladies!  I've got to say it again:  it's good to be back.  We kicked off our Spring-to-Summer transition yesterday with How to Build a Summer Capsule Wardrobe.  The guide featured 26 different items from multiple retailers, including today's focus: J.McLaughlin.  I pulled together the cutest monochromatic shirt & short combo from them.  (And because I'm never one to shy away from a little fashion controversy, today I'm talking how to wear shorts over 50.)

Although J.McLaughlin is not a regular on the blog, they're having a massive Spring Sale with up to 40% off.  I spent the weekend combing through it and pulled together my top 10 favorites from the sale.  They're all featured in an easy-to-shop widget at the end of the post.  So stick around for that.

The Summary

Today's featured items are a linen shirt and short combo from J.McLaughlin

The outfit is modeled, and I pulled together 2 alternates

The outfit is shoppable via a text or image widget

Each alternate is shoppable via a text widget

My top 10 picks from J.McLaughln's (up to) 40% off sale are featured at the end of the post

How To Wear Shorts Over 50

1. Linen Shirt

(J.McLaughlin)

When I think Summer, I think linen.  Such a breathable fabric that is perfect for warm, humid climates like Georgia.  One of today's featured items is a linen shirt from J.McLaughln.  I went with pink, but the shirt comes in over 10 different colors/patterns.

I went matchy-matchy today with a monochromatic outfit---untucked for that perfect summer casual look.   But this shirt will work with just about anything you can imagine:  jeans, jean shorts, and pants all come to mind.  (Scroll down for some alternative ideas on how to style this shirt.)

2. Gingham Shorts

(J.McLaughlin)

I'm loving these Maise shorts in gingham, also from J.McLaughlin. They evoke memories of summers growing up in the early 60s and bring a smile to my face.  They sit right above the waist and are super comfy---perfect for the 85 degrees we've been having the past few weeks.

Shorts made my top 10 summer essentials this year.  Truth is, they make my list every year.  I can't do without them, especially in the Georgia heat.  But much like distressed denim, short length can ruffle a lot of feathers.  I'm a big believer in wearing what is comfortable, and what is comfortable for some is not comfortable for all.

3. Details & Accessories

(Assorted)

I have to call out this straw tote, also from J.Mclaughlin.  It's such a versatile piece that can easily be dressed up and down.  For my money, J.McLaughlin and Madewell are putting out some of the best handbags this year.

Happy Sunday, ladies!  We've got something new for you today.  Last week, Kelly and I spent the day shopping at Banana Republic.  We decided to put together a sort of dressing room diary for you all, but with a little catch:  we wore the same outfits.  We were matching mother and daughter-in-law.

So today, we're going to share those photos with you, because well, it's Mother's Day.  And as something a little extra, I put together two boards today:  one from Talbots and one from Ann Taylor.  The only constraint I put on myself was to limit the boards to the new arrivals.  (And truthly, that wasn't too hard, given how great the Spring collection has been from both retailers.)

So, without further ado, let's see the photos.
