One of my all-time favorites that always makes my top ten coat list is The Timeless Trench that embues elegance and sophistication. It also stands as a symbol of class and refinement. With its sleek and tailored design, the trench coat has been a staple in fashion for decades, transcending trends and remaining a go-to choice for those seeking a polished look.
Crafted with attention to detail, the timeless trench offers a balance of functionality and style. Of course, Burberry reigns supreme when it comes to a khaki trench. historians claim Thomas Burberry invented gabardine fabric in 1879. in 1901 he designed and submitted an Army Officer’s raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office, and so the military trench began its life. during WWI British Officers wore trench coats that had been modified with shoulder straps and D-rings. the ring was included so that map cases, swords or other equipment could easily attach to the belt. after all, necessity is the mother of invention.
Additionally, many trench coats are water-resistant, making them an ideal choice for those unpredictable fall showers.

The history of the peacoat is deeply rooted in military and naval backgrounds and the jacket has been around since the 1800s when the first variation was worn by then naval powerhouse, the Dutch. The name pea coat originated from the Dutch word “pije” (they pronounce their j’s funny), which was used in the Dutch language to describe a coat made from coarse wool fabric.
While the Dutch are credited for inventing the peacoat, it was the British navy who can take the credit for the popularization of the jacket. The British version of the coat was similarly designed for naval duties, particularly designed to be a uniform for petty officers.
The coat then made its way across the Atlantic for a third appearance, this time with the American Navy. The U.S. Navy adopted the coat and used the coat for “reefers”, who were the sailors responsible for the unenviable task of climbing up the rigging of sailing ships.

What can I say about this classic coat except it’s the perfect third layer come fall.
Classic style never goes out of style, so if you’re looking for a classic coat that will stand the test of time, look no further than the iconic brand Barbour. I’m a big fan of their iconic waxed coat with corduroy collar made popular by Queen Elizabeth. According to fashion folklore, the late Queen Elizabeth II was so attached to her Barbour Beaufort jacket that when the brand offered to replace her waxed cotton, corduroy-collared style with a newer iteration, she opted to hold on to her well-loved original for 25 years.
Another barn jacket that caught my attention is this lightweight Heritage Barn Jacket from J.Crew in plaid. It has all of the classic details associated with barn jackets like corduroy collar, patch pockets and gold crest buttons. And if I haven’t mentioned it size up one size with coats so you can wear even the chunkiest sweaters underneath.
I also love this quilted jacket from Barbour that's sporty, chic, and oh-so-classic. It looks fantastic popped over a pair of black pants from and a simple black sweater.
Modern and Fresh: Teddy Bear Sherpa
Okay, I’m gonna admit I’m a sucker when it comes to sherpa whether it’s the main attraction or merely lining a coat for warmth.
Timeless Classic: Quilted Puffer Jacket
Last but not least is the iconic puffer jacket made famous by Eddie Bauer and a fishing trip gone awry. Legend has it Eddie suffered a severe case of hypothermia after carrying wet fish back to camp. After the incident he was determined to create a coat that could withstand the elements, keeping him warm and dry.

Great line-up of coats! We ladies must have so many kinds! I love the pea, teddy and puffer coats the best. A sweater coat on my 5’1″ frame does not work. I wore one once and my son thought I had on a robe! Lol!
