Oh - how we love thee…in our homes, on our bodies…on our lips!! As we welcome February and her many celebrations of love and joy, it is fun to imagine, contemplate and enjoy many of the diverse meanings of the color Red!
Love, luck, happiness, passion, courage, energy, power, optimism, stimulating, survival…even a bit of aggression! What does it mean to you and your life??
Today, Marlene explores all the ways we love the color red

For me, this very celebrated color brings images of the Henri Matisse masterpiece The Red Room, 1908, Man Ray’s surrealistic, ethereal Lips, 1966, and legendary Vogue fashion editor Diana Vreeland’s famed blood Red Chintz living room, by master interior designer Billy Baldwin!
All are favorites. Great loves!
As Retail Director, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, I had the privilege of creating quality reproductions of The Red Room: Harmony in Red for the Armand Hammer sponsored major exhibition Impressionist to Early Modern Painting from the USSR. This glorious oil on canvas is in the permanent collection of the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.
Art and Surrealism (Man Ray, Dali…) specifically is certainly enjoying a major fashion moment again with fashion house Schiaparelli’s fabulous influence. Creative director Daniel Roseberry recently won the coveted Neiman Marcus 2024 creativity award, and seems to be dressing everyone from Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, Dua Lipa to Lady Gaga. I digress!
With this Dragon Lunar New Year upon us February 10th to 24th, it also brings to my mind the opulent red of 1991 Chinese romance drama Raise the Red Lantern starring the beautiful, talented Gong Li.
Living in San Francisco with the oldest, architectural and historic Chinatown, streets are now lined with lanterns, for good fortune and all manner of celebration! Of course, the charming Lunar New Year Parade, the largest celebration of its kind outside of Asia, is planned and will be complete with a new, thrilling 288-foot Golden Dragon! This year’s Parade Grand Marshall will be Awkwafina.
This February, we are also in the thick of film’s Red Carpet Awards season with all of its very exciting fashion and style moments.
Valentino’s beautiful Reds are always on show!! Red is Valentino! Valentino Garavani began using it in his very first 1959 collection. Valentino: Master of Couture London exhibition showcased this Italian legend career and his glorious talents. Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis all enjoyed his amazing craftsmanship. Numerous starlets and icons today continue to adore him and the house’s incredibly beautiful, feminine creations.
Leaving politics and sports aside, Red also is a charming nickname for film’s gorgeous redheads: Rita Hayworth, Lucille Ball, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Chastain…
Of course, our beloved Saint Valentine’s Day being February 14th has us all in Love!!
Aren’t we envisioning Red lacquered nails, luscious ruby lips, dozens of fragrant long-stemmed roses in fabulous Baccarat Vases with their signature red box, or voluminous velvety red Amaryllis blossoms perhaps?? Of course, we’re wearing Louboutin’s famed red soled shoes, enjoying red and blush wine, and oh so many hearts to epitomize this celebration of the Season of Love!! Tous les choses!
